Detour planning notes

Knowing it is closed helps keep a family's day on track.

Chiho Kazama approaches this page as a guide to getting around Tateyama with family today. Plan other places for toilets, meals, rainy days and children's play first; even without entering Nanbo Paradise, you can still enjoy southern Boso through the sea, forest, museum and farm sales outlet.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Do not plan on an operating roadside station

Tateyama City says roadside station use stopped on April 1, 2025, after Aloha Garden Tateyama closed, and registration was cancelled effective June 13, 2025. Do not count on using toilets, shops, visitor information or dining here.

02

Find the southern Boso experience nearby

This place was remembered for tropical plants, hula, animal encounters and bright coastal drives. For a family outing now, choose indoor exhibits and meals at Nagisa no Eki Tateyama, seaside play at Okinoshima, forest walks at Tateyama Wild Bird Forest and a flower lined drive on Boso Flower Line. That makes it easier to rebuild the day's plans.

03

Knowing it is closed helps before you drive

Prefectural Route 257 passes the former Nanbo Paradise site and is an enjoyable road toward the coast and Heisaura. Arriving here before looking for food or a toilet can cost time. Decide in advance whether to head toward Tateyama Station and Hojo Beach, Awa Shrine, or the Tomiura Interchange.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Before setting out on a southern Boso drive

Remove the former station from your destinations and choose a rest stop first

Even if a car navigation system or older travel page still lists Nanbo Paradise, do not plan to eat or use the toilets there. After checking Tateyama City's registration cancellation notice, decide whether to head back toward central Tateyama or continue toward Awa Shrine and the Wild Bird Forest.

Check the closure before departure → redirect to Nagisa no Eki Tateyama, Green Farm Tateyama or the Wild Bird Forest

Older travel sites may still show information from when it operated. Give priority to Tateyama City's notice and the former official site's closure notice.

Families with preschool and elementary school children

With children, reorganize toilets, food and an indoor fallback together

Families expecting the former Aloha Garden's greenhouses or animals may find the change especially disappointing on arrival. Head to Nagisa no Eki Tateyama first for the seaside plaza, museum, Sakana-kun Gallery, food and shopping in one place.

Decide to pass the former Nanbo Paradise → toilets and food at Nagisa no Eki Tateyama → Okinoshima if weather permits

Central Tateyama gets busy in summer and on fireworks days. With small children, eat outside the busiest meal times.

A half day drive for adults

On a clear day, enjoy the sea and flower lined road

Boso Flower Line is pleasant for rapeseed flowers from January into spring and its bright coast in summer. Rather than stopping at the former station, focus on the views en route through Heisaura and Sunosaki toward Hojo Beach.

Prefectural Route 257 → Boso Flower Line → Heisaura and Sunosaki → meal in central Tateyama

Strong coastal wind, sunshine and summer parking crowds can change the experience. Plan one extra short rest stop.

A fallback when weather changes the day

In rain or strong winds, switch to indoor time and the forest

If seaside plans fall through, spend time indoors at Nagisa Museum or Sakana-kun Gallery, then take a short walk at Tateyama Wild Bird Forest if the rain eases. Tateyama's sea and nature can still be part of the day by another route.

Nagisa no Eki Tateyama → Tateyama Wild Bird Forest or a town cafe → return journey

The Wild Bird Forest also involves outdoor walking. In heavy rain, stick to the museum or a stop in town instead.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★☆☆☆

The former facility cannot serve as a rest stop; plan feeding and diaper changes at another facility.

Choose a stop at Nagisa no Eki Tateyama or in central Tateyama before you go, so you spend less time deciding in the car.

Ages 2–3
★★☆☆☆

Plans will fall through if you expect animals or greenhouses at the former Aloha Garden.

Arrange indoor exhibits, a short shore walk and a meal in that order, so you can move on before children get restless.

Ages 4–6
★★★☆☆

A play focused trip still works if you move the activity to nearby places.

Choose Okinoshima on a clear day, Sakana-kun Gallery on a rainy day, or the Wild Bird Forest when children are ready for a little walking.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Pair the history of the former facility with alternative routes for sea, forest and flowers.

Choose Boso Flower Line, Okinoshima or the Wild Bird Forest according to weather; there is still plenty of southern Boso to experience.

Plan toilets at another facility

Do not count on toilets at the former roadside station. Use Nagisa no Eki Tateyama, Green Farm Tateyama or a stop in central Tateyama. Nagisa no Eki Tateyama's parking closes at night, so it is not a nighttime rest stop.

Choose meal options before arrival

Do not plan to eat at the former facility; use Tateyama Nagisa Shokudo, town restaurants or a farm sales facility instead.

Choose indoor exhibits for rain

Nagisa Museum and Sakana-kun Gallery offer alternatives if seaside plans fall through.

Account for summer parking and heat

Okinoshima and the Hojo Beach area get crowded in summer. For longer time by the sea, plan water, shade and a change of clothes.

Tateyama summer events in 2026

The swimming beach season (mid July to late August), Tateyama District Joint Festival, Tateyama Bay Fireworks and Awa Shrine Grand Festival listed in Tateyama City Tourism Association's summer events guide have passed for 2026. These were not events at the former station. Check the association's events guide for future seasons.

62nd Tateyama Tourism Festival: Tateyama Bay Fireworks

The edition advertised for August 8, 2026, 19:30–20:30 has ended, and the official site posted a thank you notice. Organizers did not provide parking for the 2026 event; for a future edition, follow official traffic restriction and public transport guidance rather than driving in from the former station area.

Seasons along Boso Flower Line

Tateyama City Tourism Association describes Boso Flower Line as an approximately 46 km coastal road from Shitamachi Intersection to Wada-cho in Minamiboso City, with rapeseed flowers from January into spring.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

You may head here without knowing it is closed

Older travel and map listings may retain operating era hours, prices and parking information. Prioritize Tateyama City's registration cancellation notice and the former official site's closure notice; do not plan to rest here.

Tropical atmosphere and children's play defined the former facility

Accounts and pre-closure introductions frequently mention tropical plants, animal encounters, hula performances and a children's play area. Families once had high expectations of a visit. Today, split that experience among indoor exhibits, the seashore and forest walks.

Unsuitable for overnight parking or a night rest stop

Older overnight-in-car accounts mention parking and toilets, but these cannot be assumed available after registration was cancelled. Do not use old information to decide on nighttime rest, toilets or whether overnight parking is permitted.

Replace the former greenhouses on rainy days

In the Aloha Garden era, greenhouses and indoor activities were a strength on rainy days. Now, Nagisa Museum, Sakana-kun Gallery and a meal in central Tateyama provide alternatives when weather changes plans.

Boso Flower Line changes with the seasons

Even without a stop at the former station, the road from Prefectural Route 257 onto Boso Flower Line offers a southern Boso experience. Think separately about rapeseed flowers from January into spring, the summer coast and the need for care driving in strong winds.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Do not plan on Nanbo Paradise as an operating rest stop.
  • Do not give old hours, prices or parking information priority over Tateyama City's registration cancellation notice.
  • Plan toilets and meals at Nagisa no Eki Tateyama, Roadside Station Green Farm Tateyama or in central Tateyama.
  • If your family expected the old Aloha Garden's greenhouses, animals and hula, divide your activities among indoor exhibits, the shore and forest walks.
  • Allow for parking demand and traffic at Okinoshima, Hojo Beach and Tateyama Bay Fireworks in summer.
  • Rapeseed flowers, coastal views, strong wind and sunshine change the experience of Boso Flower Line by season.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Shopping
    Umi no Marche Tateyama
Inside Nagisa no Eki Tateyama. 9:00–17:00; generally open daily, with possible temporary closures or seasonal changes to hours.
  • Dining
    Tateyama Nagisa Shokudo
Inside Nagisa no Eki Tateyama. Lunch 11:00–15:00; cafe 15:00–17:00; generally open daily, with possible temporary closures or seasonal changes to hours.
  • Produce sales and light meals
    Roadside Station Green Farm Tateyama
A shopping option when heading back toward the Tateyama Expressway.
  • Rest stop
Dining in town after swimming or a shore walk
In summer, factor in parking and traffic, and head toward Tateyama Station or Hojo Beach for dining.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Rework lunch plans

Nagisa no Eki Tateyama

Umi no Marche, Tateyama Nagisa Shokudo, Nagisa Museum and the Sakana-kun Gallery are together here, making plans easier to rearrange on rainy days or with small children.

You will need to head back toward central Tateyama from the former Nanbo Paradise site. Allow for parking demand and traffic during summer swimming season and on fireworks days.

Buy local produce

Roadside Station Green Farm Tateyama

If you had planned to shop at the former station, shift to produce sales and light food toward the Tateyama Expressway; this fits more easily into the drive home.

Event stalls and opening hours can change. Check official or tourism association updates before going.

Spend a little time by the sea

Okinoshima area

After a meal, add rockpool play, a short walk or time for photos. This suits families with elementary school age children or older, and adults looking for a seaside walk.

Some visitor guidance says the parking area is not formally developed, and summer gets crowded. Do not assume public showers or changing rooms are available.

Switch to indoor activities on a rainy day

Nagisa Museum and Sakana-kun Gallery

Families who expected the old Aloha Garden greenhouses and animal encounters can switch to indoor exhibits and learning about the sea, keeping an activity for children in the day.

Nagisa Museum and Sakana-kun Gallery run 9:00–16:45 and, from April 2026, are generally closed every Monday (or the following day if Monday is a public holiday). The seaside plaza is also temporarily closed every Thursday for the time being, as well as Mondays. Temporary closure also applies during tsunami advisories or warnings; check Tateyama City's notices before departure.

Switch to a forest walk

Tateyama Wild Bird Forest

If sea winds are strong or beach play does not suit the day, try the forest's Fureai Wild Bird Hall, walking trails and viewpoints for another way to enjoy southern Boso nature.

Usual visiting hours are around 9:00–16:30. The route includes slopes and trails, so do not force a stroller focused outing.
