Chiho’s Wada-juku notes

Pause for chikara mochi and oyaki before the pass.

Chiho Kosaka sees Wadajuku Station as small but clear in its reasons to eat. Chikara mochi carries the story of Wada Pass, oyaki reflects the processing kitchen’s handiwork, and the direct-sales shop follows the highland-vegetable seasons. Choosing what to buy here gives the road to Wada-juku Honjin or Utsukushigahara more meaning than a drive through.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Wadajuku Station is a small farm-direct-sales roadside station on National Route 142 in Wada, Nagawa Town, Nagano Prefecture, at about 820 m elevation. Its compact building brings together local food and shopping: three kinds of chikara mochi, a rice-cake specialty linked to Edo-period Wada Pass; oyaki, stuffed buns made in the processing kitchen on holidays; wild-vegetable okowa rice; fried stream fish; Kokuyo miso; nozawana greens; and Nagato Farm ice cream. Combine a stop here with Wada-juku Honjin, the historic inn site about 200 m away, Wadajuku Onsen Fureai no Yu after a meal, or the pass road toward Utsukushigahara and the Venus Line. It is a chance to pause in the old post town before heading into the mountains, beyond a simple toilet break. Editor Chiho Kosaka recommends chikara mochi and oyaki as markers for bringing a taste of Nagawa Town back from a road trip.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Taste Wada Pass chikara mochi at the roadside station today

The official Kanto roadside-station guide and the station describe chikara mochi as an effort to turn the rice cakes once sold at Wada Pass in the Edo period into a local specialty. The three versions are topped with sweet red bean paste, sesame, and kinako (roasted soybean flour). Production is limited.

02

On holidays, wait for fresh oyaki from the processing kitchen

The station says it makes oyaki (stuffed buns) and mochi in the farm-produce processing kitchen beside the direct-sales shop and generally sells them the same day on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Standard fillings include nozawana greens, sweet red bean paste, and dried daikon radish; seasonal flavors include fuki-miso, green onion miso, and eggplant.

03

Highland vegetables and mountain products lead the shopping

The station’s produce list details seasonal direct-sale items including Chinese cabbage, cabbage, lettuce, nozawana greens, wild yam, and beans. Prices and supply change, so choose from what is on the shelves that day.

04

After your break, head to Wada-juku Honjin, the hot spring, or Utsukushigahara

The station’s facility guide places Nakasendo Wada-juku about 200 m away and the Utsukushigahara Highlands about 14 km away. For a short stop, visit the Honjin historic inn site; finish at Fureai no Yu hot spring, or continue toward Utsukushigahara on a clear day.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A break around midday on National Route 142

Stop for chikara mochi and oyaki

The most distinctive tastes here are chikara mochi, with its Wada Pass story, and oyaki made in the processing kitchen. They are sold mainly on weekends and public holidays, with batches expected to appear from around 10:00. Keep your lunch flexible and buy them if they are available.

Park → processing kitchen and shelves → direct-sales shop → dining room or a break in the car.

Chikara mochi is made in limited quantities and can sell out. Oyaki production days and times can shift with weather and temperature; the station says around 10:00, while the Kanto listing says from 9:00 on weekends and public holidays.

Adults who want a little history on their trip

Take a short walk to Wada-juku Honjin

Walk about 200 m from the station to Wada-juku Honjin to see a site from the Nakasendo post town. It adds local context to your shopping and helps you imagine travelers eating chikara mochi before crossing Wada Pass.

Station → Wada-juku Honjin → souvenirs at the direct-sales shop → back to National Route 142.

The Honjin has winter and Monday closures and set opening hours. Keep the walk short if weather or footing is poor.

Mountain-road drives, motorcycles, and bicycles

Stock up before Utsukushigahara and the Venus Line

The official access guide gives about 14 km to the Utsukushigahara area. Use the station’s toilets and pick up drinks, a snack, or something sweet before entering the mountain road, where highland weather can change quickly.

Supplies at the station → Utsukushigahara and Kirigamine area → hot spring on the return.

Fog, wind, and winter ice change conditions on highland roads. Check road information in winter or bad weather.

Families, older visitors, and rainy days

Finish a half-day outing at the hot spring

Try Wada food in the dining room or direct-sales shop, then go to Wadajuku Onsen Fureai no Yu for an outing less dependent on the weather. Its open-air and view baths offer a glimpse of the area even on a day without much walking.

Wadajuku Station → Wada-juku Honjin or a drive onward → Fureai no Yu.

Fureai no Yu is generally closed on Mondays. Check the last admission time and any maintenance closures.
