How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First on arrival
Check shop and snack hours, and restroom access

The restrooms are unavailable outside business hours and on closed days. Plan a visit during opening hours rather than an overnight stop.

For food
Chestnut croquettes, chestnut soft serve and takeaway chestnut okowa

The restaurant is closed. For a full lunch, consider central Obuse or the parking area as well.

For shopping
Chestnut sweets, Shinshu souvenirs and seasonal produce

Chestnut and walnut yubeshi, a chewy Japanese sweet, makes a distinctive souvenir. Farm produce depends on the season and shop hours.

With children
Let them move around Obuse General Park first

Play equipment, lawns and a pond are nearby after time in the car. Mind the summer sun; keep rainy day visits short.

With a dog
A short dog run and park walk

A useful break on a long drive. During events or hot hours, a short visit may be more comfortable.

For a half-day outing
Continue to the Hokusai Museum, Gansho-in Temple and a hot spring

Add a walk through Obuse or a hot spring with views of the five peaks of northern Shinshu rather than ending the outing at the station.

Why this stop still works while the restaurant is closed

Oasis Obuse is no longer a stop to choose for the restaurant described in older guides. Yet easy parking, clear shop and restroom hours, and room to stretch in the park matter on a drive. Try a chestnut snack, browse souvenirs and breathe in the park, then continue to the Hokusai Museum, Gansho-in Temple or a hot spring. It makes a comfortable gateway to Obuse.

1

Plan a full lunch elsewhere

The restaurant is closed. Enjoy chestnut okowa or snacks lightly, and consider town or the parking-area side for a fuller meal.

2

Include park time

The park makes the stop useful for children, dogs and drivers who need a break.

3

Visit during business hours

Restroom access is also limited to business hours. This suits a daytime start to Obuse sightseeing more than an early or late stop.

Highlights

Oasis Obuse is a roadside station connected directly to Obuse Parking Area and Obuse General Park. Since July 2026, rebuilding work has reduced operations mainly to the souvenir shop and snacks. Enjoy a little chestnut okowa (seasoned sticky rice), a chestnut croquette or chestnut soft serve, let children or dogs take a break in the park, then continue to the Hokusai Museum, Gansho-in Temple or a hot spring if time allows. It works especially well as a place to pause during a drive before entering Obuse town, rather than as a destination for a full restaurant meal.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A place to reset before entering Obuse

Easy to reach from the expressway or local roads, it lets you park and head for the shop, snacks or park. Use the restroom, shop and take a park break here before entering the busier town center.

02

For now, enjoy chestnut snacks and takeaways instead of a restaurant meal

The restaurant is closed during rebuilding. This is a handy stop for chestnut croquettes, chestnut soft serve, takeaway chestnut okowa (seasoned sticky rice), chestnut sweets and Shinshu souvenirs, rather than your main lunch stop. Chestnut okowa goes on sale at 10:00 and ends when sold out, so come early if it is a priority.

03

A refreshing break for children and dogs

Adjacent Obuse General Park has lawns, a pond, wooden play equipment, a Tarzan rope, a roller slide and a dog run. Even with reduced food service, it offers room to move during a long drive.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

On the way toward Niigata or Nagano; using Obuse Parking Area or the smart interchange

Turn a Joshin-etsu Expressway break into Obuse shopping

Accessible from both the expressway and local roads, this stop adds a taste of Obuse to a parking-area break. Browse chestnut sweets and Shinshu souvenirs, then pause for a chestnut croquette or soft serve before continuing.

From Obuse Parking Area or the Obuse smart interchange area, head toward the dedicated parking and park side.

The restrooms are unavailable outside business hours. For a night or early morning break, consider the main parking area or another option.

A driving break with preschool or elementary-school children

With children, make the park the main event

The lawns, pond, wooden play equipment, Tarzan rope and roller slide in Obuse General Park give children room to play. Even while the restaurant is closed, you can buy a small snack, rest outdoors and give them a short play break.

Shop → lawn or playground → farm produce stand if time permits.

Stay close to toddlers around the pond and larger play equipment. In midsummer, prioritize shade and water.

The Hokusai Museum, Chestnut Lane and central sweet shops

Plan your chestnut-town walk before heading in

Central Obuse can be busy by season and on holidays. Use Oasis Obuse for the restroom and shopping, decide how long to stay in town, and choose together whether to visit the Hokusai Museum or buy chestnut sweets first.

Oasis Obuse → Hokusai Museum and Chestnut Lane area; a few minutes by car, with extra time for parking on busy days.

In autumn chestnut season or on event days, decide on a lunch option in town early because the station restaurant is closed.

Long drives with a dog, especially at cooler hours

With a dog, start with a walk

The dog run and park paths make it natural to walk your dog after time in the car, then shop. People can make a quick stop for chestnut sweets and souvenirs while the dog gets a park break.

Park → dog run and leashed walk → shop or snack counter.

Dogs may find event days and crowds unsettled. A short visit in cooler hours may suit them best.

After park play or a town walk, when you want a bath before heading home

End a longer outing at Akebi no Yu

Obuse Onsen Akebi no Yu offers day bathing from 6:00 in the morning until evening and views of the five peaks of northern Shinshu. A light bite at the station, park time or a town walk, then a bath can turn a short drive into a half-day trip.

Oasis Obuse → central Obuse or Gansho-in Temple → Akebi no Yu.

The bathhouse has monthly closed days; check its official schedule before going.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 0–1
★★★☆☆

Best for a restroom stop during business hours and a little fresh air, rather than nursing or a long stay.

Restrooms are available only during business hours, so this is poorly suited to an early morning or late night stop.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Lawns and play equipment for younger children offer a change of pace.

Stay close to children around the pond and larger equipment.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Wooden play equipment, the Tarzan rope and roller slide can be especially fun at this age.

With the restaurant closed, snacks and park play still make a rewarding short stop.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Combine park play, watching the dog run and cultural stops such as the Hokusai Museum or Gansho-in Temple.

Allow half a day if adding mallet golf or a town walk.

Restrooms

The official notice says they are unavailable outside business hours and on closed days.

Outdoor play

The park side has lawns, a pond, play equipment and a dog run.

Meals

With the restaurant closed, also consider town or the parking-area side for lunch.

Rainy days

Much of the appeal is outdoors; in rain, switch to shopping and nearby cultural venues.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Obuse General Park outdoor stage and lawns

The park often hosts markets and food truck events. They make a visit lively, but parking and the shop can be busy; shift your timing if you only need a break.

Museums and memorial exhibitions in Obuse

Changing special exhibitions at the Hokusai Museum, Takai Kozan Memorial Museum and Japan Lamp Museum offer options for extending a station stop into a town walk.

Chestnut-season town walks

Autumn brings Obuse chestnuts to the fore, while meals and parking in the center can get busy. Oasis Obuse can serve as a break and shopping stop.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

From July 2026, plan around the restaurant closure

Older descriptions may still recommend the chestnut-okowa restaurant, but rebuilding has reduced current operations to the souvenir shop and snacks. Make a light bite, shopping and nearby stops your plan rather than a full lunch here.

Chestnut snacks give a quick taste of the station

Chestnut soft serve, chestnut croquettes, takeaway chestnut okowa and chestnut sweets are easy ways to sample Obuse. Even with the restaurant closed, you can choose local sweets and souvenirs.

A park break adds much to the visit

Reviews and travel accounts often mention the spacious parking, lawns, pond, benches and walks with dogs. Allow a little outdoor rest instead of stopping only at the shop.

Direct parking-area access is convenient; follow the right parking route

Expressway users are directed to park in a dedicated lot and walk over, a different approach from local-road visitors. Check the official access guide or video before a first visit.

Event days are lively; allow time for a quick break

Obuse General Park often hosts markets and food truck events, adding reasons to stay. Parking and the shop can also get busy, so consider a different time for a short stop.

In rain, switch from the park to cultural venues

The outdoor park is a major draw. In rain or extreme heat, make a short shop stop and consider the Hokusai Museum, Takai Kozan Memorial Museum or Japan Lamp Museum indoors.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • From July 2026, plan around reduced operations during rebuilding and the restaurant closure.
  • Chestnut okowa sales start at 10:00 and end when sold out, so come early if you want some.
  • Restrooms are unavailable outside business hours and on closed days; do not rely on this for a night stop.
  • For park time, plan around summer sun and supervise children by the pond and play equipment; keep the stop manageable.
  • Before going into central Obuse, use the station restroom and shop to make the town visit easier.
  • On event days, expect a lively park and possible crowds at parking and the shop.
  • In rain, shorten the park visit and consider indoor sightseeing at the Hokusai Museum or a memorial museum.
