How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First on arrival
Locate the toilets, Tenbo, and Issassa from the parking area

The station is easy to reach from the IC. Decide whether you want a meal, shopping, or a rest before Lake Nojiri to keep the visit simple.

If eating
Hand-made Kirishita soba and milk soft serve

Restaurant last orders are normally at 16:00, or around 15:00 in winter. At some times only light snacks are served, so allow enough time if you want lunch.

If shopping
Check summer corn first

Official information notes temporary sellouts during busy periods. On summer weekends, check the farm shop before eating.

With children
Keep the station visit short, then head to Lake Nojiri or the fairy tale museum

Rather than spend a long time playing at the station, use the toilets, eat, enjoy a sweet, and head to a museum or Kurohime Plateau about 10 minutes away by car.

On a rainy day
Head to the Naumann Elephant Museum or Issa Memorial Museum

Nearby indoor destinations are an advantage around Shinano-machi IC. You can keep your plans flexible when mountain or lake views are poor.

For seasonal produce
Corn from late July to early September

The Shinano Town Tourism Association describes late July to around early September as the season along Morokoshi Road, the town's corn-stand route. Check the farm shop or its official social media for arrivals.

Chiho's stopover notes

A place to sort out food and shopping before sightseeing.

Chiho Morisaki sees Michi-no-Eki Shinano as a preparation stop before Kurohime and Lake Nojiri. First locate parking, toilets, the restaurant, and the farm shop. In summer, check corn first; at lunch, choose Kirishita soba; for a short stop, try milk soft serve. The appeal is being able to move comfortably to the next destination without overloading the schedule.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Shinano sits near Shinano-machi IC on the Joshinetsu Expressway. With views of the five northern Shinshu peaks, it is a place to plan a meal and shop. Highlights are hand-made Kirishita soba at Tenbo restaurant, soft serve made with Kurohime Kogen Farm milk, and freshly picked vegetables at the Issassa farm shop. From late July through September, it is worth arriving early for Shinano-grown corn. Editor Chiho Morisaki starts with the parking, toilets, rest area, and opening hours, then suggests this food and shopping stop as a manageable starting point for families heading to Lake Nojiri or Kurohime Plateau.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Just off the interchange for a quick meal and shop

Immediately after leaving Shinano-machi IC, you can use the toilet, eat, and shop in one stop before heading to Kurohime Plateau or Lake Nojiri. Parking accommodates 72 standard cars and 12 large vehicles, making it easy to park first and plan a family visit.

02

Tenbo's Kirishita soba and milk soft serve make even a short stop memorable

Tenbo restaurant overlooks Mount Kurohime and Mount Myoko. Its specialties are Kirishita soba, a local soba noodle specialty hand-made each morning, and soft serve made with Kurohime Kogen Farm milk delivered from the adjacent dairy plant. Even without a long meal, the soft serve offers a taste of the area.

03

Shop for corn in summer, new soba and new rice in autumn

The stars at Issassa change by season: wild vegetables and rhubarb in spring; corn and tomatoes in summer; new-season soba and rice in autumn; and vegetables grown or stored under snow in winter. Summer corn is popular and may sell out on weekends or later in the day, so shop before eating if it is a priority.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Days when sightseeing starts from Shinano-machi IC

Eat and use the toilets before visiting Kurohime or Lake Nojiri

After leaving the IC, first check the toilets and parking at the roadside station. For lunch, have Kirishita soba at Tenbo; for something lighter, choose soft serve. You can settle food and shopping plans before Lake Nojiri or Kurohime Plateau.

Shinano-machi IC → Michi-no-Eki Shinano → Tenbo or Issassa → Lake Nojiri or Kurohime Plateau.

On summer weekends, the farm shop and restaurant can be busy at the same time. Leave room to switch from lunch to shopping or a sweet treat.

Shopping trips from late July to early September

Make corn the priority and arrive in the morning

If Shinano-grown corn is your goal, arriving before it gets too late gives you a better choice. Check varieties and quantities at Issassa, then extend your trip to Morokoshi Road if needed. Seasonal grilled or boiled corn at the restaurant may also be an option.

Issassa → corn and summer vegetables → a snack or soft serve at Tenbo → Morokoshi Road.

Notices say farm produce cannot be held or reserved. If it has sold out, consider another town farm stand or another day.

Families with young children; rainy or very hot days

Pair a sweet treat with an indoor stop for children

Shopping and eating are the main activities here, so the station is better as a short stop than a long play session. After soft serve, head to the Lake Nojiri Naumann Elephant Museum or Kurohime Fairy Tale Museum for a half-day less dependent on weather.

Toilets → soft serve → Naumann Elephant Museum or Kurohime Fairy Tale Museum.

The museum and fairy tale museum have closing days and winter closures. Check opening on the day before deciding where to take children.

Days for an unhurried meal and local culture

For adults, follow soba with a visit to Issa's hometown

After Kirishita soba, drive a few minutes to the Issa Memorial Museum to connect the meal with local culture. Exploring the old Kashiwabara post town on the Northern Highway and materials about the poet Issa adds a Shinano Town memory to your station shopping.

Lunch at Tenbo → Issa Memorial Museum → souvenirs at Issassa.

The Issa Memorial Museum has seasonal hours and closes at the end of each month. Check its open days in winter or near month-end.

On the way back from Lake Nojiri or Kurohime Plateau

In the evening, finish with shopping and views

On the return trip, check what remains at the farm shop and the restaurant's last-order time first. If views of the five northern Shinshu peaks remain, soft serve or shopping alone may be enough. Rest in the parking area before a long drive.

Nearby sightseeing → Michi-no-Eki Shinano → shopping and sweets → National Route 18 or the Joshinetsu Expressway.

Closing times change by season and for temporary operations. Check official notices if arriving in the evening.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age one or younger
★★★☆☆

Convenient for the nursing room and a short rest.

Shopping and eating are the main activities. Keep the stop to toilets, nursing, and a short sweet break; on hot days, prioritize the car's temperature and cooling for farm produce.

Ages two to three
★★★☆☆

A sweet treat followed by another destination works better than a long stay.

There is limited space to run around. A soft serve or snack break before Lake Nojiri or the museum can be easier for parents too.

Ages four to six
★★★★☆

Pair the Naumann Elephant Museum or fairy tale museum with the station for a half-day.

Eat and use the toilets here, then move to an indoor stop about 10 minutes away by car; rain or heat is less likely to disrupt the trip.

Primary school children
★★★★☆

Corn, fossils, the lake, and stories can connect into a learning trip.

In summer, discuss corn varieties and freshness; at Lake Nojiri, Naumann elephants; and at the Issa Memorial Museum, haiku. The day can offer more than shopping.

Parking and toilets

Just off the IC, it suits a rest on arrival. When busy, locate the toilets and restaurant first and divide up family errands.

Meal timing

The restaurant has light-snack hours and regular-menu hours. For lunch, aim for after 10:00 and before last orders.

Summer farm shopping

After buying corn or dairy products, plan how to keep them cool before leaving the car for a long time at Lake Nojiri or Kurohime Plateau.

Rainy-day alternatives

Check opening days for the Lake Nojiri Naumann Elephant Museum, Issa Memorial Museum, and Kurohime Fairy Tale Museum to keep options open when mountains or lake cannot be seen.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Issassa farm shop

A place to check summer corn arrivals, seasonal vegetables, and seasonal promotions. In peak periods, expect possible sellouts or controlled entry.

Around the main building entrance

Tasting events such as the Corn Derby may take place here. On event days, check parking and farm produce early.

Around Lake Nojiri

Seasonal events such as the summer fireworks festival are reached by car from the station. Prioritize road restriction and parking information.

Kurohime Plateau

A destination for craft festivals and plateau walks. It is easier to head there after eating and shopping at the station.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Later in the day, summer corn choices may shrink

Past official notices mentioned controlled entry on busy days such as weekends and temporary sellouts. In summer, check arrivals at the farm shop before going straight to the restaurant.

Eat Kirishita soba with the view

Tenbo is described as a restaurant with views of the five northern Shinshu peaks, where hand-made Kirishita soba and milk soft serve are highlights. In rain or fog, focus on food and shopping rather than the view.

With children, nearby indoor stops make a useful half-day

The station centers on farm shopping and meals. Instead of a long play stop, pause for soft serve and toilets, then visit the Lake Nojiri Naumann Elephant Museum, Kurohime Fairy Tale Museum, or Issa Memorial Museum.

A handy location calls for quick decisions when busy

Just off Shinano-machi IC, the station offers routes toward National Route 18, Kurohime Plateau, and Lake Nojiri. On crowded days, divide meal and shopping tasks rather than having everyone browse the shop together.

Each season has a clear highlight

Spring brings wild vegetables and rhubarb; summer, corn; autumn, new-season soba and rice; winter, snow-grown vegetables. Check official social media and farm shop information for a specific item, and switch to soft serve or souvenirs if it is unavailable.

On fireworks or plateau-event days, do not treat the station as the event venue

The 2026 Lake Nojiri fireworks notice listed no free parking, plus shuttle buses and traffic restrictions. Eat and shop at the station during the day, then follow organizer directions for evening travel.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

  • Tenbo normally offers light snacks and drinks from 9:00, with the regular menu from 10:00. For lunch, arrive after 10:00 and before last orders.

  • After buying dairy products or corn in summer, consider cooling them before leaving the car for a long time at Lake Nojiri or Kurohime Plateau.

  • Weather changes the experience at Kurohime Plateau and Lake Nojiri. When visibility is poor, switch to indoor options such as the museums and fairy tale museum.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Lunch highlight

Hand-made Kirishita soba at Tenbo restaurant

Enjoy a Shinano-style lunch with views toward Mount Kurohime, Mount Myoko, and Mount Iizuna.

Last orders are normally at 16:00, or around 15:00 in winter. Watch for light-snack hours and temporary closures.

A quick sweet

Kurohime Kogen Farm milk soft serve and seasonal soft serve

Even without a restaurant meal, rich milk soft serve or a changing monthly flavor adds a local taste.

Seasonal soft serve changes by month and season; every flavor is not always available.

Summer shopping

Shinano-grown corn, tomatoes, and summer vegetables

Freshly picked vegetables are the highlight. Corn's freshness matters, so plan for cooling after purchase and the temperature inside your car.

Temporary sellouts are possible on weekends or late in the day. Do not count on having produce set aside.

Seasonal farm shopping

Wild vegetables, rhubarb, flower seedlings, new-season soba, new rice, and snow-grown vegetables

The farm shop changes outside summer too. A quick look before or after sightseeing reveals Shinano Town's season.

Stock depends on weather and harvests. If you have a particular item in mind, check official social media and shop notices.

An alternative when crowded

Soft serve, souvenirs, and farm vegetables

When the restaurant is busy, shopping or a sweet treat followed by time around Lake Nojiri or Kurohime Plateau may work better.

The parking area also gets hot in summer. Choose carefully what you will leave in the car after shopping.
