Koharu's stopover notes

Decide what to eat here, then extend the trip nearby.

Koharu Takano starts with the farm stand and cafeteria: Matsukawa Village rice, Shinshu Ginjo pork, seasonal soft serve, apple juice, and local sake. Choose a treat to eat or carry home, then decide between Chihiro Park and a bath at Suzumushiso. Food and shopping can anchor a visit even when the Northern Alps view is hidden.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Azumino Matsukawa is a roadside rest stop on the Northern Alps Panorama Road between Azumino IC and the Omachi area. It is modest in size, but the farm stand stocks vegetables, fruit, edible wild plants, autumn apples, and newly harvested rice from around Matsukawa Village. The shop offers local sake, apple juice, a dip made with Azumino onions, and Shinshu souvenirs such as Matsumoto Ippon-negi long onions and wasabi-kombu tea. At the cafeteria, order from a ticket machine: choices include the Uma-toro rice bowl made with Shinshu Ginjo pork, the Furusato set meal with purple rice and Matsukawa-grown rice, a weekly lunch, and soft serve. It works for either a full meal or a quick sweet stop during a drive.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The farm stand opens the season

Matsukawa Village also highlights local vegetables, fruit, edible wild plants, autumn apples, and newly harvested rice at the farm stand. Before heading to a larger attraction, check the shelves to see what Azumino has today. If shopping is your priority, visit the farm stand before eating.

02

A small cafeteria with plenty to choose from

The restaurant is open 10:00–18:00, with last orders at 17:40. Options include the Uma-toro rice bowl with Shinshu Ginjo pork, a Furusato set meal with Matsukawa Village rice, a weekly lunch on weekdays, and a soba set on weekends. What to choose depends on the day and time.

03

See the Northern Alps, then extend your stop

The station is near Hosono Station, on the route from Azumino IC toward Omachi and Hakuba. Chihiro Park and Suzumushiso are a few minutes away by car, and the Omachi–Matsukawa area of Alps Azumino National Government Park is another easy driving option. A stop here can include more than food and shopping.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

On the way from Azumino IC to Omachi or Hakuba

A 30-minute farm stand and sweets break

After parking, use the toilets, then check the farm stand for seasonal vegetables and fruit. If there is no time for lunch, pick up apple juice or a small souvenir at the shop and finish with soft serve from the cafeteria counter.

Parking → 24-hour toilets → farm stand → shop → soft serve → return to Prefectural Route 306.

Farm produce varies by season and time of day. For a shopping visit, avoid relying on finding one specific item late in the day.

An adult driving lunch or a day for a substantial meal

Make lunch the main event and taste Matsukawa rice

Order at the cafeteria ticket machine and wait for your number. If you want the Uma-toro rice bowl with Shinshu Ginjo pork or the Furusato set meal with Shimai (紫舞) purple rice and Matsukawa-grown rice, check the crowd and limited quantities before visiting the farm stand.

Check the cafeteria menu → eat → shop for local sake, apple juice, and Shinshu souvenirs → farm stand.

The cafeteria accepts cash only, and limited and weekly dishes change. Check the official menu before setting out if lunch is your main reason to visit.

Families with preschool or primary-school children; days after rain or when it is not too hot

A family half-day at Chihiro Park and the museum

Eat a light meal at the roadside station, then go to Azumino Chihiro Park. Its broad grounds overlook the Northern Alps and include an activity and exchange center, an experiential farm, train-car classrooms and library, and Tomoe's auditorium where children can explore. The museum also describes facilities for babies and young children.

Michi-no-Eki Azumino Matsukawa → Azumino Chihiro Park and Museum → hot spring or lunch at Suzumushiso.

The museum has seasonal closures, including the second and fourth Wednesdays. A winter closure starting December 16 is announced for 2026.

The return from Omachi or Hakuba; rainy days; travel with older companions

Finish the Northern Alps Panorama Road with a hot spring

After shopping and eating, drive a few minutes to Suzumushiso for a rest in its day-use hot spring. Buying Matsukawa Village produce and ending with a bath also suits a day when you want to avoid crowded tourist sites.

Farm stand → cafeteria or soft serve → day-use hot spring at Suzumushiso → toward Azumino IC.

The day-use hot spring normally closes on Thursdays and has a last admission time. Some visitor information lists different Thursday hours, so check Suzumushiso’s official schedule for an evening or Thursday visit.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for toilets, a short shopping stop, and a break in the car.

The station itself is not a place for extended play. Check the day's facility information for nursing and diaper-changing facilities; if needed, continue to Chihiro Park or the museum.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Good for a brief change of pace with soft serve or a look around the shop.

Keep the stop short: toilets, a sweet, then back to the car may be easier than a long walk through the farm stand.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Combine the stop with outdoor play or the train-car classrooms and library at Chihiro Park.

Eat and shop at the roadside station, then go to the park for playtime.

Primary-school children
★★★★☆

Add the museum, activity and exchange center, or national park for a day of food, nature, and learning.

In summer, watch the heat; in winter, check closures, snow, and mountain-side weather, and switch between indoor and outdoor plans.

Time at the station

Plan around shopping, eating, and toilets; go farther afield for outdoor play.

You are called by number. With small children, settle on a seat before waiting.

Nearby

Its large park, museum, and activity facilities let you extend the visit to suit the children's ages.

Weather

The Northern Alps side changes with the season and weather. Bring water in summer; check road surfaces and closure notices in winter.

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    From parking to the toilets

On a long drive, use the 24-hour toilets and take a break first. Large-vehicle parking is also listed.

Choose easy-to-carry items such as vegetables, fruit, apple juice, and local sake first.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Small in size, strong on fresh shopping

Reviews and travel accounts tend to describe a short stop at the farm stand and cafeteria, rather than a long stay at a huge attraction. Look at the fruit and vegetables in season first; autumn apples and newly harvested rice give an especially strong reason to stop.

Adjust cafeteria plans for limits and days of the week

The Uma-toro bowl and Furusato set meal have stated daily limits; there is also a weekly lunch and a weekend soba set. Arrive early if you want a specific meal, or leave room to switch to soft serve and the shop later in the day.

The Northern Alps view changes with the weather

The village describes the roadside station as overlooking the Northern Alps and fields. A clear day makes for a scenic break; in cloud or rain, focus on the cafeteria, shop, or hot spring instead.

For longer children's play, go nearby

The station centers on eating, shopping, and resting. For room to run, drive to Azumino Chihiro Park; the train-car classrooms and library and activity and exchange center can fill half a day.

An express bus stop and nearby Hosono Station add travel options

The facility has an express bus stop on the Shinjuku–Hakuba route and is near Hosono Station on the JR Oito Line. Along with drivers, travelers heading toward Hakuba can use it for toilets, food, and ticket purchases.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Illustrative image — not an on-site photograph
Morning to late morning

Farm stand vegetables, fruit, and edible wild plants

Look first for seasonal items such as blueberries, onions, plums, seedlings, flowers, autumn apples, and newly harvested rice. Earlier hours offer more choice for shopping.

Lunch

Uma-toro bowl, Furusato set meal, and weekly lunch

If the cafeteria is your main stop, keep daily limits and the day of the week in mind. Buy a ticket and wait at your seat; it is a simple option for solo travelers or families.

The cafeteria accepts cash only. Bring cash rather than counting on a cashless option.

A light break

Soft serve and apple juice

Even a short stop can include sweets and a taste of Matsukawa from the shop. Seasonal soft serve flavors change, so check the day's choice at the counter.

Souvenirs

Local sake, Shinshu-only sweets, Matsumoto Ippon-negi long onions, and wasabi-kombu tea

The shop ranges from local foods, seasonings, sake, and wine to crafts and Nagano souvenirs. There is a reason to browse even when you are not eating.

When it is busy

Visit the farm stand first; stay flexible about limited cafeteria dishes

If the cafeteria is crowded at lunchtime, browse produce and have a sweet first. You can also spend the time at nearby Chihiro Park or Suzumushiso.
