If you want a meal
Inobuta ramen or hoto noodles

The dining hall's usual hours are Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, 10:00–16:00. It is also listed as open weekdays, 10:00–15:00, in October 2026; outside dining hours, plan around the shop.

Takano's stopover notes

Choose where to eat and rest before entering the mountain road.

Naomi Takano sees Mitomi as a place to catch your breath before heading into the natural surroundings of Mitomi in Yamanashi City. Look at yomogi mochi and miso in the shop, warm up with inobuta ramen or hoto if the dining hall is open, and check the toilet and parking before heading to Nishizawa Gorge. A stop here can also ease the strain of a drive before or after the Karisaka Tunnel.

1

Eat

If the hours fit, make the dining hall your meal stop. Otherwise, turn to sweets and take-home foods in the shop.

2

Shop

Choose yomogi mochi, Gonzaburo miso, bottled goods, or honey to bring back a taste of Mitomi.

3

Walk

Nishizawa Gorge needs time and equipment; Ichinokama is a shorter waterfall walk. Do not cram both into one day.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Mitomi is a rest stop in the Mitomi area of Yamanashi City, near the Karisaka Tunnel toll gate on National Route 140. Before or after visiting Nishizawa Gorge, you can plan a toilet stop, drinks, and parking. The shop carries yomogi mochi (mugwort rice cakes), Gonzaburo miso, bottled peaches, dried fruit produced in Yamanashi City, and natural honey from Mitomi. The dining hall normally opens on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 10:00 to 16:00; its October 2026 notice also lists weekday hours of 10:00 to 15:00. Warm choices for a mountain drive include a hoto noodle set, the specialty inobuta (wild boar–pig hybrid) ramen, and Hirose Dam curry. The adjacent 7inchCAMP Michi-no-Eki Mitomi DOG BASE adds dog-friendly camping to options ranging from a short break or gorge walk to a visit on an event day.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Prepare and rest before or after Nishizawa Gorge

Michi-no-Eki Mitomi is close to the Nishizawa Gorge entrance, and the tourism association lists the parking area north of the station as an option for gorge visitors. On a hiking or walking day, plan your toilet stop, drinks, snacks, and shopping for the return before setting off into the mountains.

02

Warm dishes at the entrance to the mountains

The official facility guide lists a hoto noodle set (thick flat noodles in a vegetable broth), specialty inobuta ramen, Hirose Dam curry, meat udon, and a chicken offal set. If the dining hall does not fit your schedule, the shop also offers options such as yomogi mochi, bottled goods, and dried fruit.

03

A convenient break on either side of the Karisaka Tunnel

The station is well placed for a break before heading toward Saitama or just after entering the Yamanashi side. Its parking area has spaces for 85 standard cars and 14 large vehicles, plus toilets and an EV fast charger, making it a useful pause before or after the long mountain road.

04

An adjacent campsite for visitors with dogs

The adjacent 7inchCAMP Michi-no-Eki Mitomi DOG BASE is described in its official guide as a campsite specializing in dog-run pitches where guests can spend time with their dogs. You can plan an overnight stay and a BBQ reservation alongside a visit to the roadside station.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Walks during the fresh-green or autumn foliage seasons

Get ready before Nishizawa Gorge

After parking, use the toilet, buy drinks and trail snacks, and consider where to eat on your return. Nishizawa Gorge has a winter closure and trail conditions to consider, so check the weather and your available time again before leaving the station.

Michi-no-Eki Mitomi → Nishizawa Gorge entrance → gorge walk → break at the shop or dining hall

Visitors are asked not to bring pets into Nishizawa Gorge. If traveling with a dog, choose DOG BASE or a nearby rest stop instead of the gorge.

Mountain drives to or from the Chichibu area

Take a break before or after the Karisaka Tunnel

Before entering the long mountain road, or just after emerging on the Yamanashi side, combine a toilet stop, parking, a warm meal, and a visit to the shop. Even on a hurried day, a yomogi mochi or some dried fruit makes for a small taste of Mitomi.

National Route 140 → Michi-no-Eki Mitomi → Karisaka Tunnel or central Yamanashi City

Bad weather or closures of the tunnel or national route may change plans, including event plans.

Days when you do not want a walk as long as Nishizawa Gorge

Pair Ichinokama Falls with a hot spring when it reopens

For a shorter outing, add Shimizu Gorge and the noted Ichinokama Falls. Mitomi Fuefuki-no-Yu would normally make a relaxing final stop, but Yamanashi City says it is closed until further notice because of equipment failure. Check for reopening before including it. If the dining hall is open, you could have inobuta ramen or dam curry before setting off.

Michi-no-Eki Mitomi → Ichinokama Falls → Mitomi Fuefuki-no-Yu (only after reopening) → return trip

Paths around Ichinokama Falls can be slippery in winter or rain. Choose footwear and plans to suit the weather.

Days using 7inchCAMP

Stock up for camping with your dog

Before checking in at DOG BASE, look at BBQ sets, take-home foods, and drinks at the roadside station shop. Products for dogs, such as venison jerky, are another option, so the shop can be part of the camping experience.

Roadside station shop → DOG BASE reception → campsite

Check the official campsite or booking site for current reservations, rates, payment methods, and reception hours.

The August 15, 2026 festival visit

Arrive early on the Fuefukigawa Headwaters Festival day

The 2026 Fuefukigawa Headwaters Festival was held at a special venue at Michi-no-Eki Mitomi, with Hirose Dam visits, Nishizawa Gorge tours, forest therapy experiences, and a Karisaka Tunnel cycling tour. Parking and visitor flow differ from an ordinary rest stop day, so it makes sense to eat and use the toilet early at a future event.

Arrive early → event reception → tour or stalls → return trip

The 2026 notice said the event would proceed in rain, but could be cancelled if a typhoon approached or National Route 140 closed. Check any future event's current notice.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for a short toilet, shop, and car break rather than a long stay or nursing stop.

Mountain weather can change, so staying within easy reach of the car may be less tiring than an outdoor walk.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Keep eating, shopping, and a little walking in short segments.

Shop sweets or a short detour near Ichinokama Falls, paced by an adult, may be more practical than a full Nishizawa Gorge walk.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

A brief visit around Ichinokama Falls or Lake Hirose can add variety.

Watch your footing near water and waterfalls. Use the station toilet first and choose one place to walk.

Elementary-school age
★★★★☆

Nishizawa Gorge, the dam, or the headwaters festival can add things to learn about.

A gorge walk needs time and suitable gear. Check age requirements and capacity for festival tours.

Toilet before the gorge

Use the station as a base before and after the walk.

Dining hall visit

For October 2026, listed hours are weekdays 10:00–15:00 and weekends/public holidays 10:00–16:00. With children, consider sweets or take-home foods if meal service does not fit your schedule.

Traveling with a dog

Visitors are asked not to bring pets into Nishizawa Gorge, so keep the two destinations separate.

Event

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A practical base before and after Nishizawa Gorge

Travel accounts often mention the station as a place to use the toilet and get drinks before entering the gorge. Prepare here and plan a rest stop on your way back.

Warm Yamanashi dishes make the dining hall memorable

Hoto, inobuta ramen, and dam curry are distinctive choices on a mountain drive. Because dining hours are usually centered on weekends and public holidays, keep another food option in mind.

Allow extra time for parking in green and autumn foliage seasons

The Nishizawa Gorge area sees more visitors for rhododendrons in May and autumn leaves. Even if you are only using the station, allow extra time during gorge season.

Change outdoor walking plans in rain or winter

Nishizawa Gorge closes in winter, and paths around Ichinokama Falls can be slippery in winter or rain. On days unsuitable for walking, the dining hall and shop make an easier outing. Mitomi Fuefuki-no-Yu is closed until further notice because of equipment failure; check Yamanashi City for reopening before planning a bath.

An event day changes the station into a venue

The Fuefukigawa Headwaters Festival used the Michi-no-Eki Mitomi special venue for stalls and tours. At a future festival, plan parking, meals, and toilet breaks earlier than for an ordinary station visit.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • On a Nishizawa Gorge day, use the station toilet, get drinks, and choose a place to rest on your return before setting off.
  • For Nishizawa Gorge or mountain hiking, the station's official guidance says to park in the adjacent gravel lot rather than the lot directly in front of the station.
  • The dining hall's usual hours are Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, 10:00–16:00. It is also listed as open weekdays, 10:00–15:00, in October 2026; check the official monthly notice before visiting.
  • Yomogi mochi and seasonal goods may sell out or vary with deliveries.
  • Check Nishizawa Gorge's winter closure, route information, and advice against bringing pets before visiting.
  • Ichinokama suits a shorter waterfall walk, but put footing first in rain or winter.
  • Bad weather or closures may change plans toward the Karisaka Tunnel, so check National Route 140 conditions.
  • When traveling with a dog, plan a DOG BASE visit separately from a gorge walk.
  • On event days, confirm the date through station and Yamanashi City announcements and arrive earlier than for an ordinary rest stop.
