Local-ingredient Italian food can turn a break into a more memorable lunch.

When you need a rest

For a side trip
Myorakuji Temple or Takahide Dairy Farm

Choose a quiet woodland temple or extend the trip for dairy-farm gelato.

Hozumi’s detour notes

Buy vegetables, eat local food and finish with a bath.

The appeal here is that you need not choose just one purpose. Pick vegetables or flowers at Tsudoi Market, have lunch at Trattoria Due and, if tired, visit Tsudoi no Yu. With little time, shop only; with a dog, take an outdoor break; for something sweet, head to Takahide Dairy Farm. Food, shopping and a chance to unwind share one site, making this an easy weekend-drive stop.

Even on a hurried drive toward Outer Boso, one vegetable purchase and one bath give you a reason to remember Mutsuzawa.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A direct-sale market for more than a quick purchase

At Tsudoi Market, browse local vegetables, flowers and processed foods for dinner that day or a dish after you get home. Souvenirs include Mutsumi, a junmai daiginjo sake made with rice grown for sake in Mutsuzawa and featured by the Kanto roadside-station guide. Junmai daiginjo is a premium sake grade.

02

Add a hot spring bath to your break

Mutsuzawa Onsen Tsudoi no Yu is listed as open until 21:00 (last entry 20:30), making it useful after daytime shopping or on an evening return from the coast or wooded hills. During holiday periods, admission may be limited or reception may close early. Leave extra time if the bath is your main reason for stopping.

03

Italian food with local ingredients

Trattoria Due serves Italian food using local ingredients. It offers another lunch option beyond a set-meal dining hall, whether you are travelling as a couple, with friends or with children sharing dishes. On busy days, the café, takeaway food or prepared foods at the market offer alternatives.

04

Options for dogs, cyclists and BBQ visitors

The facility guide lists a dog run, cycle station, Olive Grove café and BBQ area. You can make a short station stop or add time outdoors, adjusting the visit to different companions’ interests.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A weekend drive toward Kujukuri or Ichinomiya

Build a lunch stop around the market and Italian food

After the morning drive, stop to browse vegetables and flowers at Tsudoi Market, then have lunch at Trattoria Due. Continue to the Olive Grove café afterward for a break beyond shopping. If the restaurant is busy, leave room to switch to the market, café or takeaway food.

Park → Tsudoi Market → Trattoria Due → café or departure

Lunchtime and holidays can mean a wait for food. An early lunch or shopping first makes the visit easier.

After the coast or hills; an evening break for adults

Add a bath to ease the drive home

Spend the day around Ichinomiya or Otaki, then stop at Mutsuzawa Onsen Tsudoi no Yu on the way back. Avoid buying too many chilled items before bathing; eat afterward if you wish. This order makes the car and schedule easier to manage. Holiday crowd notices may affect entry, so allow a fallback before making the bath your very last stop.

Nearby sightseeing → roadside station → Tsudoi no Yu → dinner or drive home

Reception closing and entry restrictions depend on the day’s crowds. Check official notices if the bath is your main destination.

Families after a long drive; visitors with dogs

Break up family or dog trips with short outdoor stops

Use the dog run, Olive Grove and café to separate shopping from an outdoor break. With young children, a meal, toilet stop and short walk may work better than a long stay within the station. On hot days, keep outdoor time short and focus on the bath or indoor shopping.

Park → toilets → outdoor break → shopping → café or departure

Weather, ground conditions and heat affect the dog run and outdoor seating. In midsummer, avoid the hottest daytime hours.

A day for food and a sense of the area

Extend a half-day to Myorakuji or dairy-farm gelato

After lunch and shopping at the station, visit Myorakuji Temple for a quiet walk or Takahide Dairy Farm Milk Workshop for another sweet stop. Myorakuji is an old temple in woodland with a cultural treasure; the dairy offers cheese and gelato. Linking the market with nearby food and scenery makes the stop more than a drive through Mutsuzawa.

Roadside station → Myorakuji Temple or Takahide Dairy Farm → drive home

Myorakuji is a quiet place of worship, while the dairy has closing days and last orders. Choosing one destination keeps the trip manageable.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or under
★★★★☆

Works well for brief indoor shopping and a short meal stop.

A short circuit of the toilets, market and café suits this age better than a long stay. If adding the bath, avoid crowded hours for a calmer visit.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Easy to break up the visit with a little walk, food and a return to the car.

Add a short stop at Olive Grove or another outdoor area. In midsummer or rain, focus on the market and dining.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Dining, shopping, watching the dog run and nearby detours offer variety.

A short Myorakuji walk or dairy-farm gelato may be more memorable than staying only at the station.

Elementary-school age
★★★★☆

Easy to expand the theme to baths, cycling, a dairy farm or cultural heritage.

Families can choose a focus: buy ingredients, bathe or visit the woodland temple.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Allow time for a busy bath

Official notices sometimes give holiday crowd forecasts or reception measures. Keep the bath flexible: go earlier or switch to a meal so the day does not hinge on one last stop.

Split outdoor time and shopping when visiting with a dog

The dog run and Olive Grove let one person take a break outdoors while another shops. Shorten outdoor time in heat or rain.

Follow official hour changes in severe weather

Typhoons and other severe weather can bring shorter hours or temporary closures. Leave flexibility around the bath and dining when the weather worsens.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • At lunch, leave room to switch from Trattoria Due to the market or café.
  • On bath days, plan chilled purchases and the order of shopping and bathing.
  • On holidays, watch for Tsudoi no Yu entry limits or early reception closing.
  • With dogs or children, keep outdoor breaks short and avoid midday in midsummer.
  • If visiting Myorakuji or Takahide Dairy Farm, leave enough time rather than overfilling the station visit.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Browse the direct-sale market in the morning

Local vegetables, flowers, processed foods and Mutsumi sake

Vegetables and flowers vary with deliveries and sellouts. Browse once before bathing or heading out, and plan room-temperature souvenirs separately from chilled purchases.

Make lunch the main event

Trattoria Due

If local-ingredient Italian food is your aim, the 11:00 hour or after the lunch peak may be easier. If busy, browse the market first and use the wait for shopping.

Keep it light

Olive Grove café; prepared foods and souvenirs from the market

For a short meal stop, choose the café or market. A lighter meal can also make the next activity easier when travelling with dogs or children.

Add something sweet

Olive Grove café; Takahide Dairy Farm Milk Workshop

Choose the on-site café for a rest or dairy-farm gelato for an extra detour. A separate sweet stop can still make a busy dining day satisfying.

Plan around the bath

Tsudoi no Yu; market; dining

Decide whether to return to shop after bathing or buy only room-temperature souvenirs beforehand to keep the car more comfortable.

Switch plans when things sell out or get crowded

Market; café; bath; nearby sweets

If vegetables or seasonal products are scarce, dining is crowded or bath entry is limited, drop one objective. Shopping, a café stop or a bath alone can still make a worthwhile visit.
