Nanohana, Aokura Shoten and Shiosai offer quick ways to taste local fish.

For something sweet
Farm desserts and loquat sweets

Kondo Farm dairy treats and Takayama Seika's loquat buns and cream-filled daifuku, a soft rice cake, make good breaks.

For a side trip
Iwai Beach or Fushihime Rōketsu

Choose the coast or the wooded hills for the next leg of your day.

Amemiya's detour notes

A station that makes you want to browse the market before the restaurants.

At Furari Tomiyama, choosing what to take home is as enjoyable as choosing what to eat. Browse fish-based prepared foods, local vegetables, farm desserts and loquat sweets before heading upstairs; if the restaurants are crowded, you will already have alternatives. The stop can also branch into a trip to the sea, the wooded hills or a hot spring.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Furari Tomiyama is a roadside station in Minamiboso connected to a highway oasis on the Futtsu–Tateyama Road. Browse local vegetables, fresh fish and prepared foods on the first floor, then head to the second floor for fish-ball soup, sanga-yaki fish patties, seafood, wagyu beef, farm desserts and bakery items. Lunchtime can be busy; the farm market, prepared foods and sweets offer alternatives to a sit-down meal. On a clear day, continue to Iwai Beach or Fushihime Rōketsu cave; for a slower finish, consider Shōraku no Yu or the Hota Fishing Port area.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Accessible from both the expressway and local roads

The roadside station joins a rest stop on the Futtsu–Tateyama Road, so it works both on the way to southern Boso and during a local-road tour of Iwai and Kyonan. The expressway-side parking can get busy on weekends and public holidays. Official guidance also suggests exiting at Kyonan-Tomiyama IC and using the roadside-station parking.

02

Fish and produce from the hills in one stop

Seafood from the Iwai coast, vegetables and flowers from the foot of Mount Tomiyama, and handmade prepared foods are all here. Even without a restaurant meal, you can take home sanga-yaki fish patties, fish-ball soup, loquat sweets or dairy products.

03

From a short break to a half-day drive

With 15 minutes, use the toilets and browse the farm market; with 45 minutes, add the food court and sweets. With half a day, go on to Iwai Beach, Fushihime Rōketsu, Shōraku no Yu or the Hota Fishing Port area. Adjust the trip to your companions' energy and the weather.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A lunch stop en route to southern Boso

Make lunch from seafood and prepared foods

First browse prepared foods and the farm market on the first floor, then check how busy the second-floor restaurants are. For a sit-down meal, choose from seafood, soba, ramen, wagyu or Italian food. If they are crowded, switch to fish-ball soup, sanga-yaki, bread or sweets.

Parking → first-floor farm market and prepared foods → second-floor food court → sweets or souvenirs.

At weekend lunchtime, keep takeaway food to enjoy in the car or at your accommodation as an option if restaurants are crowded.

Families with children and short walks on clear days

Add a sea breeze at Iwai Beach

After eating and shopping at the station, drive to Iwai Beach so children can stretch their legs. Known for its gently shelving, calm sandy shore, it is worth visiting just to see the sea outside the swimming season too.

Station → Iwai Beach → return to the station for sweets or toilets if needed.

Wind and sun can change how the beach feels. Keep the visit short if you have not prepared for sand play or swimming.

Adults and walks with elementary-school-aged children or older

Step into a hillside story at Fushihime Rōketsu

For a link to the story of Nansō Satomi Hakkenden, visit Fushihime Rōketsu, the cave associated with Princess Fushihime. Parking and narrow roads need care. Choose between a short post-meal visit and a longer hike toward Mount Tomiyama.

Station → Fushihime Rōketsu → toward Mount Tomiyama if energy allows.

Check the ground and weather in the hills. After rain or with small children, skip the climb if conditions are difficult.

A drive through southern Boso lasting into the evening

Finish at a hot spring or Hota Fishing Port

After shopping at the station, rest at Shōraku no Yu hot spring or add another seafood meal at Banya Main Building. Use Furari as a midday starting point before heading toward Kyonan.

Station → Shōraku no Yu or Banya Main Building → journey home.

Hours and closed days at these separate facilities can change; check their official information before setting out.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Up to 1 year old
★★★★☆

Best for a short, mostly indoor break around feeding and diaper changes.

When crowded, a quick stop at the market and toilets may be easier than a long stay upstairs.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Keep eating, shopping and returning to the car in short stages.

For more room to move on a clear day, make a short trip to Iwai Beach rather than planning a long play session inside the station.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Sweets, bread and a beach walk can help keep the visit varied.

If the wait for lunch looks long, switching to prepared foods or bread is straightforward here.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Extend the trip to Iwai Beach or Fushihime Rōketsu for more than food alone.

For the hills, consider shoes and weather, and distinguish a short visit from a hike.

Lunch rush

On busy restaurant days, check prepared foods, bread, sweets and takeaway options first.

Beach side trip

Iwai Beach offers a change of scene, but wind, sun and sand affect how long to stay.

Hillside side trip

Fushihime Rōketsu and Mount Tomiyama are generally easier to enjoy with elementary-school-aged children or older than with toddlers who need carrying.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Use the local-road parking

On holidays when the expressway-side parking is crowded, follow the suggested route via Kyonan-Tomiyama IC to the local-road side.

  2. 2
    Decide on first-floor shopping first

See the fresh fish, prepared foods, vegetables and flowers before eating so you can choose without rushing afterward.

  3. 3
Adapt the restaurant plan to the crowds

Switch flexibly between a sit-down meal, a snack, sweets and takeaway to reduce fatigue.

For seasonal experiences such as bamboo shoots, loquats and mandarins, check by phone or through official notices before planning around them; timing depends on the season and weather.

Seasonal farm-market products

Vegetables, flowers, fresh fish and Bōshū loquat products change with the season. Browse early in case items sell out.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Keep a backup plan at lunchtime

Many visitors come for food, and the food court and parking tend to be busy on holidays. You can queue for a restaurant, buy prepared foods, switch to bread or sweets, or head to the beach first.

Second-floor dining draws visitors after the renovation

Since the major 2023 renovation, more visitors have praised the second-floor food court and rest area. Leave some extra time for a sit-down meal.

The coast and hills offer different walks

Iwai Beach is good for a short change of scene; Fushihime Rōketsu and Mount Tomiyama are more about local stories and hillside walking. Choose with your companions' ages, shoes and the weather in mind.

Balance expressway convenience with crowds

The highway oasis is convenient, but official facility guidance warns that expressway-side parking can be crowded on weekends and public holidays. Another option is to exit at Kyonan-Tomiyama IC and approach the local-road parking.

Keep seasonal experiences flexible

Harvesting bamboo shoots, loquats or mandarins is a southern Boso experience, but weather and crop growth affect it. Plan around station food and shopping, and add an experience if it is running.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

A fish dish

Fish-ball soup, sanga-yaki fish patties, local-fish soba, seafood rice bowls

For a quick taste of this station, choose fish-based prepared food or a restaurant dish.

The catch, supplies and shop operations affect what is available.

Meat, noodles and bread

Fushihime wagyu, ramen, rice bowls, FURAPAN!

The range makes it easier for companions who do not eat fish to choose another meal.

Sweets

Kondo Farm soft-serve ice cream, loquat buns, fresh-cream daifuku

Even without eating at a restaurant, sweets and souvenirs make the stop worthwhile.

Takeaway

Handmade prepared foods, fresh fish, seasonal vegetables, flowers, processed products

Choose something to open at your accommodation or at home, and take a taste of southern Boso with you after a short visit.

A cool bag is useful for fresh fish and prepared foods.

Boso gift drinks and sweets

Fushihime loquat wine, Boso craft beer, loquat buns, small sweets from southern Boso

Loquat sweets and local beer make regional souvenirs even when chilled foods are awkward to carry.

Stock and sales conditions for alcohol and seasonal sweets change; check the shop's notices on the day.
