Naomi's detour notes

Taste a loquat, then choose the sea or the flowers.

Naomi Hinata sees Tomiura as the station where Boshu loquats start a Minamiboso outing. Begin with loquat soft serve or loquat curry, then choose loquat sweets or cut flowers in the shop. From there, decide whether to see the sea at Haraoka Pier or add flowers at Otsunosato. That turns a stop into a trip.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Tomiura is a starting point for a drive through Minamiboso, with Boshu loquat sweets, a cafe, a shop and tourist information in one stop. Take a break with loquat soft serve or loquat curry, pick up loquat sweets or cut flowers, then continue to Haraoka Pier, Taibusa Cape or flower picking. A short stop can become a half-day outing. Loquat is the orange fruit known as biwa in Japanese.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Make Boshu loquats the highlight of your break

Tomiura is known as a growing area for Boshu loquats, and the cafe and shop center on the fruit. Look for loquat soft serve, loquat curry, loquat jelly and loquat sweets as you browse: they make the reason for stopping here clear.

02

Switch easily between the cafe and shopping in one building

Takeout starts at about 9:15, and the cafe restaurant generally operates from 10:00 to 16:30. You can decide on the spot whether to wait for lunch, have only a soft serve, or shop for cut flowers and souvenirs.

03

Add a short trip to the sea, cape or flowers

Close to Tomiura Interchange, the station makes it easy to add Haraoka Pier, Taibusa Cape Natural Park, Otsunosato Flower Club or Osakana Club by car. Add another scene of Minamiboso to your visit.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A brief stop on National Route 127 or near Tomiura Interchange

Take a 30-minute loquat break

After parking, visit the restrooms, takeout counter and shop in that order. Eat loquat soft serve and choose a loquat jelly or small sweet. Even a quick stop will feel like a visit to Tomiura.

Park → restrooms → loquat soft serve → shop → depart.

At lunchtime on holidays, dining and shopping can overlap. If time is short, focus on either sweets or shopping.

Days when you want a meal and souvenirs at the station

Make lunch of loquat curry and shopping

Make the cafe restaurant's loquat curry the centerpiece of lunch, then browse loquat sweets, cut flowers and local vegetables in the shop. With so much loquat produce on offer, it is easy to return to a local flavor when you cannot decide what to buy.

Cafe restaurant → shop → break by the flowerbeds or on the terrace.

The cafe has a last-order time. Arriving well before the end of service leaves more lunch choices.

A sunny adult outing, photography or sunset views

Add seaside photos to a half-day drive

After a loquat treat at the station, head to Okamoto Pier at Haraoka Beach for both Tomiura food and scenery. Spring through summer includes periods when the setting sun aligns with Mount Fuji, a view called Diamond Fuji. Leave time for parking and crowds if aiming for evening.

Michi-no-Eki Tomiura → Haraoka Beach (Okamoto Pier) → Taibusa Cape if time allows.

Wind, sun and evening crowds change conditions by the sea. With small children, also watch the footing and the darkness on the way back.

A winter-to-spring outing with something seasonal to take home

Combine flower picking with loquat souvenirs

During flower-picking season at Otsunosato Flower Club, you can take home both flowers and loquat sweets. In heavy rain or wind, favor an indoor break and shopping, and decide on flower picking after checking whether it is open.

Michi-no-Eki Tomiura → Otsunosato Flower Club → return journey.

Flower picking is seasonal. Notices also indicate a closure period from around mid-May into autumn, so check current official information for the day you visit.

Days when you want a substantial fish meal

Plan a separate stop for a seafood lunch

The station centers on loquat treats and its cafe. For a fish-focused meal, make Osakana Club near Tomiura Fishing Port a separate stop. It tends to close when food sells out, so do not leave a seafood lunch too late.

Osakana Club → sweets and shopping at Michi-no-Eki Tomiura → Haraoka Pier.

Osakana Club is generally closed on Tuesdays and mainly serves lunch. Plan to arrive earlier than you might at the station.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Good for a brief shop and indoor break.

Use the cafe and shop briefly. If adding the beach or pier, plan for carrying the child, wind and sun without pushing the outing too far.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A loquat soft serve break followed by a return to the car works well.

A sweet treat and a quick look outside are more realistic than a long shopping trip. For Haraoka Pier or Taibusa Cape, consider the footing and how tired children may be on the way back.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Easy to show children a treat, flowers and the seaside one at a time.

Combine loquat soft serve, flowerbeds and a nearby beach to keep the outing varied. On rainy days, switch to a cafe break and shopping.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Boshu loquats, the fishing port, the pier and Taibusa Cape offer things to talk about.

At this age, food and landscape can connect. Eat loquats at the station, then see the sea at Haraoka Pier or Taibusa Cape to get a sense of Minamiboso.

Cafe terrace and flowerbeds

Resting while looking at flowers is a characteristic way to enjoy this station. In rain or extreme heat, choose an indoor break.

Nearby sunsets and Diamond Fuji

Haraoka Beach and Taibusa Cape can get busy during sunset-viewing periods. Finish shopping at the station early and allow extra time by the sea.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Loquat curry can be a lunch destination

The cafe restaurant serves loquat curry, pasta and loquat drinks, bringing Boshu loquats into a meal. Choices may narrow at a late lunch, so go earlier if lunch is your aim.

Shop separately for loquat sweets and cut flowers

With loquat jelly, packaged loquat curry, loquat sweets and cut flowers on offer, shopping is easier if you distinguish treats for yourself, gifts to share and items to carry home by car.

Set aside separate time to walk Taibusa Cape

Taibusa Cape Natural Park is a large park with an observation tower, visitor center and campsite. Allow time to walk and return rather than treating it as a momentary stop on the way from the station.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The main station is generally open 9:15–17:00 year-round. Some facilities, including the restaurant, may close or change hours.
  • The cafe restaurant is generally open 10:00–16:30, with last orders around 16:00. If coming for lunch, arriving earlier leaves more choices.
  • Takeout is generally available 9:15–17:00. For a short break, deciding on loquat soft serve first makes the stop easier.
  • Experiences such as strawberry, loquat and grape picking depend on season and reservations. Check official information for the day you plan to go.
  • For Haraoka Pier or Taibusa Cape, plan your time around wind, sun, darkness near dusk and footing by the sea.
  • Flower picking has a limited operating season. Check current hours before adding Otsunosato, and leave room to switch to shopping at the station.
  • If seafood lunch is the goal, account for sellouts and Tuesday closure at Osakana Club, then leave the station's sweets and shopping for afterward.

Lunch
