Harumichi's sense of Yokoze's seasons

Before rushing to Chichibu, take in one of Yokoze's seasons.

Harumichi Kashiwagi sees Ashigakubo as a place to eat, shop and decide on the next detour. Have soba or udon for lunch, enjoy a quick black tea soft serve, and take home fruit or processed foods. The icicles draw visitors in winter, fruit from summer into autumn, and the clear stream on fine days. A single pause on the way to Chichibu leaves you with a taste of Yokoze.

At a mountain roadside station, choosing just one thing to take home can add depth to the journey.
Highlights

Roadside Station Kajū Kōen Ashigakubo sits on National Route 299 before Chichibu, with places to eat, a farm shop and the riverside close together. Have lunch at Ashigakubo Shokudo or Mizube no Udon Soba, choose fruit and local processed foods at the farm shop, or step down to the river for a short break. It is a useful starting point for a detour to the Ashigakubo Icicles in winter, the moss phlox area in spring, and fruit picking or streamside recreation from summer into autumn.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Taste and shop for Yokoze at the station

Ashigakubo Shokudo, Mizube no Udon Soba, the farm shop, Iwazakura-kan and Mizube no Cafe are close together, making it easy to combine lunch, sweets and shopping even on a short stop.

02

Take a break before entering Chichibu

The first parking area has spaces for 83 cars, and there is a second parking area too. Ashigakubo Station is also nearby. In the mountains along National Route 299, you can use the toilets, eat and shop in one stop.

03

Explore icicles, orchards and the riverside

The Ashigakubo Icicles in winter, fruit from summer into autumn, and breaks beside the clear stream offer seasonal destinations just beyond the roadside station.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A winter seasonal outing

In winter, warm up before or after the icicles

The Ashigakubo Icicles are close to both the roadside station and Ashigakubo Station. On cold days, make the outing easier by including a meal, a hot drink and a toilet stop at the roadside station.

Meal and break at the roadside station → Ashigakubo Icicles → shopping at the farm shop if time allows.

The icicles may close or change depending on weather and ice conditions. Check official information for dates, illumination and parking.

A weekend drive

Eat and shop before entering central Chichibu

On a drive toward Chichibu along National Route 299, stopping here for lunch and the toilets can help you avoid some congestion in the city center. When the cafeteria is busy, divide your time between the farm shop and Mizube no Cafe.

Roadside station → Hitsujiyama Park or central Chichibu → shop again on the return trip.

Nearby roads also become busy during moss phlox season and on holidays. Plan for an option besides the cafeteria.

A 30–45 minute break

Take home fruit and something sweet, even on a short stop

If time is short, choose a piece of fruit or a local processed food at the farm shop, then add a sweet such as black tea soft serve at Mizube no Cafe.

Park → toilets → farm shop and Iwazakura-kan → sweet treat → depart.

Fruit and popular products vary with the season and time of day. Later in the day, keep your shopping choices flexible.

A half-day drive

From summer into autumn, continue to the orchards and river

After lunch and shopping at the station, continue to Ashigakubo Orchard Village or the Yokoze River area for more than a meal. For children of elementary-school age or older, a short walk or fruit picking can make a memorable outing.

Roadside station → Ashigakubo Orchard Village → Yokoze River area or toward Chichibu.

Fruit picking, riverside activities and barbecues depend on the season, reservations and weather.

A day with uncertain weather

On rainy days, focus on food and shopping

In this mountain setting, a rainy-day stop works best around the cafeteria, farm shop and Iwazakura-kan, without trying to fit in a riverside visit or walk. Indoor stops also make a useful break for families with children.

Park → eat → shop → check official information before deciding on a nearby outing.

Hours may change during severe weather or nearby events.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Good for a short stop that combines parking, toilets, a diaper-changing table and shopping.

A quick visit to the farm shop and cafe is easier than extending the stop to the river or icicles.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Noodles or a sweet can provide a change of pace; in fine weather, a brief look at the river may be enough.

The waterside is appealing, but rising water and uneven footing are concerns. Make the break the main activity rather than planning extended water play.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

A combination of a meal, sweet, farm shop and short walk offers variety.

Add one seasonal outing, such as the icicles in winter or fruit and the riverside from summer into autumn.

Elementary-school age
★★★★★

The icicles, fruit picking, Hinatayama and the rural park, or the riverside can turn the stop into a half-day outing.

Continuing into the surrounding nature or seasonal events can make the Yokoze visit more memorable.

Diaper-changing table

The official facilities guide lists this among the toilet facilities. Use it early if the station is busy.

Riverside

The clear stream is close by, but after rain or when water is high, enjoy the view from a safe distance.

Lunch rush

The cafeteria may be busy at midday; leave time to visit the farm shop or get a sweet first.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Courtyard and terrace

The courtyard and terrace also appear in official photos. They offer a place to sit briefly after shopping or to regroup with family while waiting for the cafeteria.

Riverbank and clear stream

The clear stream is highlighted as a feature of the station. It is good for a short break in fine weather, but stay back after rain or when the water is high.

Around the farm shop

Seasonal products, fruit and vegetables are the main attraction here. On event days or holidays, shopping before eating may work well.

Second parking area

This area may be used during winter icicle season and for other nearby outings. Check the day's official parking arrangements for the icicles or events.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Black tea soft serve makes a short break worthwhile

The Kanto roadside station guide also recommends the soft serve made with black tea from Yokoze Town. Even without a cafeteria meal, this sweet offers a taste of the station.

On icicle days, plan for the cold and walking time

The Ashigakubo Icicles are within walking distance of the station. About 200 m wide and 30 m high, they are a winter destination. Account for the walk, cold and illumination times; eating and using the toilets at the station first may make the outing easier.

The orchard village and stream are natural next stops

Nearby options include Ashigakubo Orchard Village, the Yokoze River, the rural park and the Hinatayama area. If eating and shopping at the station are not enough, seasonal fruit or a short walk will reveal more of Yokoze's mountain setting.

Convenient for meeting whether arriving by train or car

Official access information gives routes from Ashigakubo Station on the Seibu Chichibu Line, National Route 299 and the Kan-Etsu Expressway direction. People arriving by car and train can meet here before eating or visiting the icicles.

Meals

Ashigakubo Shokudo / Mizube no Udon Soba

Consider the cafeteria for a full lunch, or Mizube no Udon Soba for a shorter noodle stop. Both make this a convenient lunch stop before heading toward Chichibu.

Individual shop hours vary between weekdays, weekends and holidays, and seasons.

Seasonal produce

Fruit and vegetables at the farm shop

Yokoze fruit and vegetables let you take a piece of the visit into the car or home. Check what is in season whenever you visit, beyond the summer and autumn harvests.

Stock and variety depend on the weather and time of day.

Sweets

Soft serve made with black tea from Yokoze Town

This sweet is also recommended by the Kanto roadside station guide. Even without a cafeteria meal, its tea aroma makes a satisfying short stop.

Availability depends on Mizube no Cafe's opening.

An alternative when it is crowded

Iwazakura-kan and the farm shop

If the cafeteria is busy at lunchtime, browse local processed foods, sweets and fruit first. You can enjoy the stop without making the cafeteria your only goal.

Something to enjoy later

Doburoku, jam and processed foods

Official photos show local sake and processed foods. Doburoku is a cloudy, unfiltered Japanese alcoholic drink; drivers can choose a bottle to open at their lodging or at home, rather than drinking on site.
