How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Decide first
Bath or meal only

You can dine at Yuya Shokudo without bathing. Adding the hot spring makes for a much longer stop.

For a meal
Handmade soba or udon; waraji katsu-don

Plan around the restaurant's daytime hours and allow time before last orders.

For something sweet
Bishamon shaved ice or soft serve

A treat in hot weather or after a bath; check what is available that day.

To shop
Konnyaku, shiitake and pickled shakushina greens

The produce shop opens around 9:00. Browse early for mountain village foods to take home.

To explore
Iris garden, Shinikan, dahlia garden or Marugami Falls

Nearby outings can be short; the waterfall requires a drive and a walk. Choose according to your group and the weather.

Harumichi's stopover notes

Choose one thing to eat and one thing to buy before getting into the bath.

At Ryokami Onsen Yakushi no Yu, first decide how much time you want to spend. Will you have handmade soba for lunch, eat Ogano's waraji katsu-don, or take home konnyaku and pickled shakushina from the produce shop? That choice turns a simple bath into a visit that carries a taste of Ryokami's mountain countryside home.

Highlights

Michi no Eki Ryokami Onsen Yakushi no Yu brings a day-use hot spring, Yuya Shokudo restaurant and the Ryokami Farm and Forestry Produce Shop together in Ryokami, Ogano Town. Alongside a bath, try handmade soba and udon, waraji katsu-don (a rice bowl topped with large breaded pork cutlets), miso potatoes and Bishamon shaved ice. Take home konnyaku, fresh shiitake, pickled shakushina greens, and tochi mochi or kusa mochi (rice cakes with horse chestnut or mugwort). For a short stop, use the shop and restaurant; for half a day, add the iris garden or climbing park. In season, visit the dahlia garden, or make a longer trip to Marugami Falls for a day in Ryokami's mountain countryside.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A restaurant worth visiting even without a bath

Yuya Shokudo has a separate entrance for diners who are not bathing. Its soba and udon are prepared by hand each morning. The menu also includes local waraji katsu-don, miso potatoes, soft serve made with Hokkaido ingredients and Bishamon shaved ice made with Bishamon water. You can stop for a light bite before bathing or a fuller meal afterward.

02

A produce shop full of mountain village foods

At the Ryokami Farm and Forestry Produce Shop, look for konnyaku (yam jelly), fresh shiitake, pickled shakushina greens, tochi mochi and kusa mochi (horse chestnut and mugwort rice cakes), manju buns and miso with butterbur shoots. This is a place to choose a taste of the Chichibu hills to enjoy after you get home, rather than a large market spectacle.

03

Choose a nearby stroll or a longer drive

The iris garden and Shinikan are short outings from the station. In autumn, go farther to the dahlia garden; when nature is the focus, extend the trip to Marugami Falls. Families with small children or visitors on rainy days can stay at the station or nearby, while a longer countryside drive can include the falls and flowers.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A midday drive through Chichibu or Ogano

Rest for 30–60 minutes with food and produce shopping

Even without a bath, eating soba, udon or waraji katsu-don at Yuya Shokudo and buying konnyaku or pickled shakushina at the produce shop gives you a taste of this station. Restaurant hours are relatively short, so have lunch before shopping if food is your main purpose.

Park → Yuya Shokudo → Ryokami Farm and Forestry Produce Shop → depart

Check official notices for Tuesday closures, the New Year holiday, restaurant last orders and temporary changes.

Adult trips, after hiking, or rainy days

Make the hot spring the focus of a half day

Ryokami Onsen Yakushi no Yu is generally open 10:00–20:00, with last admission around 19:30. If you are bathing after a drive or hike, browsing the produce shop first can prevent forgotten purchases. The restaurant closes before evening, so eating before bathing may make sense when a meal is part of your plan.

Produce shop → Yuya Shokudo → hot spring → rest

Bathing fees, closure days and admission times can change. Check official information on the day you plan to bathe.

A change of pace for preschool and elementary school children

Add a short nearby activity with children

Young children may tire if you combine bathing, dining and shopping, so first choose between eating at the station and a short outing to the iris garden or Shinikan. Shinikan's indoor bouldering suits children of elementary school age and older; in bloom season the iris garden makes an easy stroll.

Roadside station → iris garden or Shinikan → hot spring if wanted

Bloom dates and Shinikan admission hours vary by season and day. Choose an indoor activity in wet weather.

A flower-focused drive from September to November

Extend an autumn visit to the dahlia garden

The Ryokami Foothills Hana no Sato Dahlia Garden generally opens from September 1 to November 3. Eat and use the restrooms at the station first, then give yourself time among the mountain flowers. Shopping at the produce shop on the return trip lets you take home both flowers and local foods as memories.

Roadside station → dahlia garden → produce shop → return

Opening dates, blooms and any early opening change each year; check the dahlia garden and tourism association.

An adult drive for fresh greenery or autumn leaves

Make Marugami Falls the main outing

Marugami Falls is Saitama Prefecture's only waterfall selected among Japan's 100 Famous Waterfalls. Reaching it means driving from the station and then walking a trail. Walk to the falls first and wash off afterward at Yakushi no Yu for a satisfying day outdoors.

Marugami Falls → roadside station for bathing, food and shopping

Avoid the trail in icy or severe weather. Consider footwear, daylight and stamina.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Works best as a short restroom, feeding or changing stop, with a focus on the produce shop.

Bathing adds preparation. With a child in your arms, choosing either Yuya Shokudo or the produce shop can make for a calmer stop.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A short stop for miso potatoes or dessert can work well.

Long baths or restaurant waits can be tiring at this age. Keep eating, shopping and returning to the car brief; add the iris garden only when blooms and weather suit.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

A bath, a sweet treat and a short flower walk provide variety.

Beyond a station break, the iris garden or a nearby walk can change the pace. Check Shinikan's age and use requirements first.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Shinikan or Marugami Falls offers a bigger outing.

Choose indoor bouldering for active children, or the falls and dahlia garden for a nature day. A bath at the end rounds off the day.
