How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

For a meal
Browse the shops before lunch

Restaurants, bakeries, cafés, fresh fish and produce are in separate areas, so shopping first can work well on busy days.

For shopping
Think about produce and fish separately

Vegetables from the foot of Mount Akagi and surprisingly fresh fish for an inland station offer different things to take home.

For a break
Add the bathhouse or plaza

For a break on a long drive, consider the bathhouse; with children or dogs, look at the plaza first.

On event days
Allow extra time for food and parking

Markets and workshops can make a stop longer than an ordinary break.

Harumichi’s stopover plan

A place to eat or a place to shop? Your first choice shapes a visit to Maebashi Akagi.

Harumichi Okumura sees Maebashi Akagi as a place to plan today’s food-focused stop. Choose one priority—produce, fresh fish, bread, sweets, restaurants or a bath—before walking around, and this large station becomes easier to use.

Farm produce market

Choose seasonal vegetables at Akagi FarmLife and bring a taste of the trip to your table at home.

Sweets

Use bread, baumkuchen or a café as a lunch alternative or a short break.

Route

Change the order of stops depending on whether you are heading up the mountain, returning home or finishing with a bath.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Plenty of places to eat and shop

Akagi FarmLife, the Maebashi Akagi Fresh Fish Center, bakeries, cafés and casual restaurants are all here. You can choose lunch as well as food to enjoy after you get home.

02

Stay longer at the bathhouse and plaza

Maebashi Akagi no Yu, a lawn plaza, an inflatable play dome and a dog run let companions with different interests change how they spend their time within the station.

03

A branching point for Mount Akagi and central Maebashi

It is about 10 minutes from each of the Shibukawa-Ikaho Interchange and Komayose Smart Interchange. It fits both a supply stop before climbing the mountain and shopping after sightseeing in the city.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A food-focused stop

Make lunch and shopping the main event

First decide whether a restaurant, bakery, fresh fish or produce is your priority. Choosing one meal and one bag of purchases may be more satisfying than trying to cover everything.

Parking lot → Check how busy the restaurants are → Akagi FarmLife and the fish center → Bakery or café.

The bakery closes when it sells out, and individual shops have different closed days. Arrive earlier if you have a particular shop in mind.

Drive toward the mountain

Get ready before going up Mount Akagi

Get drinks and snacks, use the restroom and review the weather here. Conditions and perceived temperatures near the summit differ from those in the city, so it helps to revisit your plans at the station.

Roadside station → Lake Onuma and Akagi Shrine area.

For summer canoeing on Lake Onuma or winter mountain roads, check reservations, roads and weather.

Evening return trip

Ease the journey home with a bath

After sightseeing, a visit to Maebashi Akagi no Yu turns the station into a final rest stop as well as a shopping stop. Decide whether to eat before bathing or shop lightly afterward to keep the visit simple.

Nearby sightseeing → Shop at the station → Maebashi Akagi no Yu → Journey home.

Check the official information for the day for last admission, crowding and each shop’s last order time.

Families and visitors with dogs

Use the plaza as a break for children and dogs

If waiting for food or shopping becomes difficult, head to the lawn plaza, inflatable play dome or dog run. You can divide play and food into separate parts of the visit without leaving the station.

Look at meal options → Rest at the plaza → Shop → Bath, if wanted.

Hours for the inflatable play dome and dog run vary by season; plan outdoor play first when the sun sets early.

A 30–45 minute break in transit

Take home a taste of Maebashi even on a short stop

If you cannot stay long, choose at least one of the vegetables grown at the foot of Mount Akagi, bread, sweets or fresh fish after using the restroom. Opening it in the car or at home will recall your stop here.

Park → Restroom → Buy one item from the produce market, bakery or fish center → Depart.

Parking and the food court tend to be busy at lunchtime on holidays, so decide what to buy beforehand if your stop is short.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★★☆

Good for a short indoor break and shopping stop.

This is a large station, so some walking is involved. Decide in advance about nursing and diaper changes, meal waits and use of the bathhouse; several short breaks may work better than a long stay.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

The plaza offers a break from waiting for food.

The inflatable play dome and lawn plaza help, but holidays can be crowded. Playing before a meal, or briefly after shopping, can make the stop manageable.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Easy to alternate food, play and shopping within the station.

At this age, choosing bread or sweets can pair well with time to run around in the plaza. Put outdoor play first in seasons with early sunsets.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Extend the day to Mount Akagi or the firefly habitat.

You can spend time at the station alone, or add Lake Onuma, Shikishima Park or the Taguchimachi firefly habitat for a day of both food and nature.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Spaces used for events

Event plaza and Yorimichi Market

The station hosts retail stalls, workshops, markets and seasonal fairs. As of July 15, 2026, its official event listings included a beer garden, Yorimichi Market and gourmet fairs. Events can make visits longer than a normal meal stop, so plan the order of parking and eating in advance.

Weekday campaigns and activity programs may be offered. If bathing is your main purpose, check last admission and crowding before setting out.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Do not rely on a single restaurant at holiday lunchtime

The food court and bakery can draw crowds. If seats and queues are difficult, visit the produce market, fish center, bakery or café first to keep both eating and shopping enjoyable.

Visit the bakery early for the best selection

Bakerys Kitchen Ohana says it closes when sold out. If bread is your priority, going there on arrival gives you more choice than buying it incidentally later in the afternoon.

Fresh fish broadens the shopping choices

The Maebashi Akagi Fresh Fish Center gives you another reason to shop beyond the produce market. If the trip home is long, plan to keep purchases cool and visit it last.

Set aside outdoor time first with children or dogs

The lawn plaza, inflatable play dome and dog run offer time outdoors after a car ride. On hot or crowded days, or when sunset is early, even a short play break before shopping can make the visit easier.

Treat Mount Akagi weather separately from the station’s

If you are going toward Lake Onuma, check more than the weather at the station. Summer cool-weather outings and canoeing, autumn foliage and winter road conditions each change how to plan the day.

Events can make the station a destination

As of July 2026, official event listings included a beer garden, Yorimichi Market, gourmet fairs and workshops. Visits on event days last longer than ordinary breaks, so allow flexibility for eating, shopping and parking.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Opening hours, closed days and last order times differ by shop and can change. Check the official facility guide and notices if you have a particular shop in mind.
  • Parking, the food court and bakery tend to be busy at holiday lunchtimes. Shopping first can make the visit easier.
  • Bring a cooler bag for fresh fish or other perishables if you plan another stop at Mount Akagi or in the city.
  • The inflatable play dome, dog run and outdoor plaza depend on daylight and weather. Watch for summer heat and shorter winter hours.
  • For a trip toward Lake Onuma, check summit weather, temperature and road conditions separately from those at the station.
  • Some events run only briefly; check the official events page just before your visit.
  • Rinkokaku is scheduled to close from June 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027. For a city visit during that period, focus on Maebashi Park and the surrounding area.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Lunch

Hutte Hayashi Restaurant, Wanukiya, Maebashi Akagi Ramen Shokaku, Rocco, Akagimeshi local-produce diner, Udon-dokoro Nukui

Useful when companions want different foods. At peak times, look at the seating and queues and consider shopping first.

Snacks and sweets

Bakerys Kitchen Ohana, The Butter Baum, SHOP CAFE Qu, Botanical cafe KING-GOD

Even without a restaurant meal, bread, baumkuchen (a layered cake) or a café stop can give the visit its own character. Check sellouts and last order times for each shop.

Farm produce market

Maebashi and Akagi vegetables and souvenirs at Akagi FarmLife

Shopping that extends the trip to your table at home. Seasonal vegetables may offer more choice in the morning.

Fresh fish

Maebashi Akagi Fresh Fish Center

Buying fish at an inland roadside station is an unexpected reason to stop. A cooler bag makes further stops on the way home easier.

Event days

Yorimichi Market, gourmet fairs, cooking classes, beer garden

The flow of visitors differs from an ordinary day. Allow extra time for food and parking if the event is your reason for visiting.
