For lunch
Agatsumatei

Harumichi's roadside notes

A rest stop that can fill half a day

Harumichi Hirose starts by checking the parking, restrooms and opening hours. The farm shop and restaurant close before evening, while the hot spring and outdoor areas run on different schedules. On arrival, decide whether to eat lunch, walk in Agatsuma Gorge, or let children or dogs play outside first. That keeps a mountain stop manageable.

1

Eat

Agatsumatei mainly serves lunch. If you cannot avoid the busy period, leave room to switch to a light meal at Asa no Aji or take-away food from the farm shop.

2

Shop

Even on a short visit, you can take home a taste of the area: konnyaku, vegetables, fruit, Tengu bread, soy-sauce koji and ninja-themed souvenirs.

3

Rest

Tengu no Yu, a tatami-mat rest area, the footbath and the fitness area offer places to loosen up after driving before the next mountain road.

Highlights

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Prepare for a walk at the entrance to Agatsuma Gorge

The Agatsuma Gorge nature trail near Shikatobi Bridge is described as a family-friendly walk of about 1 km at an easy pace. Use the restroom and get a drink before setting out, then return for the hot spring or footbath.

02

Food and shopping tell the area's story

At the Tengu farm shop, the selection of konnyaku, udon, soba, vegetables, grapes, peaches and apples changes with the seasons. At Agatsumatei, names from Gunma and Agatsuma appear on the menu through soy-sauce koji, Akagi beef, Akagi chicken and rainbow trout raised with Hakoshima spring water.

03

Different options for children, dogs and hot spring visitors

The children's play area, fitness area, natural-grass dog run and Tengu no Yu sit together on the station grounds. Even when companions want different activities, the station works as a meeting point on a drive toward Kusatsu or Yamba.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A half-day drive during spring greenery or autumn leaves

Walk Agatsuma Gorge, then finish with a hot spring

Use the restroom and pick up a drink on arrival, then head for the Agatsuma Gorge nature trail. Even a short walk around Shikatobi Bridge can feel satisfying when followed by a bath at Tengu no Yu.

Park → buy a drink at the farm shop → walk in Agatsuma Gorge → visit Tengu no Yu → shop for take-away items.

Parking tends to fill from the morning during autumn leaf season. Arrive early on walking days.

Families with preschool and elementary-school children

Let children play outside, then have lunch

Let the children move around the play and fitness areas before eating at Agatsumatei or the light-meal counter. Play equipment is generally available from 8:00 until sunset, so use it first if you arrive late in the day.

Park → children's play area → lunch or a light meal → footbath or farm shop.

Summer mist fountains and outdoor play are fun, but adjust your visit for sun exposure and hydration.

A drive with a dog toward Kusatsu or Yamba

Take a longer break with your dog

The natural-grass dog run covers about 1,500 square meters and has a small-dog area and an open area. Let your dog run after time in the car, then take turns visiting the farm shop or footbath.

Park → dog run → farm shop → Tengu no Yu if time allows.

Hours are generally 8:00 until sunset. Follow the on-site rules for vaccinations, leashes and restricted items.

Days when a gorge walk is impractical

Focus on the hot spring and shopping on a rainy day

Instead of forcing a gorge walk, spend your time at Tengu no Yu, the tatami-mat rest area, the farm shop and Agatsumatei. The hot spring gives you a useful stop even when mountain weather is uncertain.

Park → Agatsumatei → Tengu no Yu → farm shop.

The footbath closes in winter, and outdoor areas depend on the weather. Avoid planning a long walk outside without rain gear.

A longer drive

Break a journey toward Yamba or Kusatsu

On the way from the Shibukawa-Ikaho Interchange toward National Route 145, stop here for the restroom, lunch, shopping or a hot spring bath. Choose between a 30-minute break and a two-hour visit according to your day.

Shibukawa area → Agatsuma Gorge station → Yamba or Kusatsu area.

Allow extra time for roads and parking at holiday lunchtimes, during autumn leaves and on local event days.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Suitable for a short restroom stop, farm shop visit or time near the footbath.

Sun and cold affect the outdoor areas. Check on-site facilities for nursing and diaper changes, and keep the visit in short stretches.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Toddler play equipment and a short outdoor walk are a good fit.

Let children use the play area before eating to release energy after the drive. Water play and mist features run seasonally.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Play equipment, the footbath, and ninja-themed food and souvenirs offer variety.

If there is a wait for food, the play area or light-meal counter provides an alternative. Keep a walk in Agatsuma Gorge short enough for the children.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

The Agatsuma Gorge nature trail, bicycle rental, ninja experiences and hot spring broaden the options.

During autumn leaves and events, agree on a meeting place and return time before splitting up.

Play outside before sunset

The children's play area, fitness area and dog run are generally open 8:00 until sunset. Use outdoor facilities first if you arrive late.

Eat early

Agatsumatei focuses on lunchtime. Consider a light meal before children get hungry if the restaurant is busy.

Check the footbath season

The free footbath is convenient, but it closes in winter. Make Tengu no Yu the main option in cold weather.

Agatsuma Gorge and nearby events

Seasonal farm-shop products

Fruit, vegetables, konnyaku and limited-season sweets give you different reasons to shop throughout the year, even without an event.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Decide on parking and food early during autumn leaf season

Visitor accounts suggest that parking may become busy from the morning when people come for Agatsuma Gorge's autumn leaves. Choose a main activity first rather than packing a walk, lunch and a bath into one visit.

Enjoy several local foods together

Akagi beef, Akagi chicken, rainbow trout raised with Hakoshima spring water, soy-sauce koji, konnyaku, Tengu bread and shuriken soft-serve all stand out. Splitting your choices between lunch, dessert and take-away food gives even a short visit local flavor.

The footbath is convenient, but closes in winter

The free footbath makes a break more satisfying, but closes in winter. In cold weather, plan around Tengu no Yu instead of relying on the footbath.

A convenient stop toward Kusatsu or Yamba

Official access information gives a drive of about 50 minutes from Shibukawa-Ikaho Interchange via National Routes 17, 353 and 145. This is a convenient break before continuing toward Yamba or Kusatsu; even a restroom and shopping stop helps on a long drive.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Sit down for lunch

Agatsumatei

Make this the main stop when you want to sit down for Akagi beef omelet rice, chicken-and-egg or pork-shabu rice bowls with soy-sauce koji, or a rainbow trout rice bowl.

Hours are generally 11:00–16:00, with final admission around 15:30. Arrive early during busy periods.

Eat lightly before or after a walk

Asa no Aji

Inari sushi lunch boxes, oni-sand rice sandwiches, shuriken soft-serve and gorge-themed squash offer lighter choices before a walk or hot spring visit.

Asa no Aji is generally open 11:00–16:00, with last orders at 15:30. Before a morning walk, Tengu bread from the farm shop, open from 9:00, is another option. Light meals may sell out or be seasonal, so keep your choice flexible.

Buy something to enjoy at home

Konnyaku, soy-sauce koji, vegetables, fruit and Tengu bread

The Tengu farm shop is worth a visit even when time is short. Apples and other fruit stand out in autumn; in winter, a hot spring visit and take-away shopping make a good combination.

Shop when traveling with a dog

Pet treats

After the dog run, look for pet products such as venison jerky.

Food and toys are restricted inside the dog run. Shopping afterward simplifies the visit.

Alternatives during busy periods

Light meals, farm shop, hot spring

At lunchtime on holidays or during autumn leaf season, keep the schedule flexible: eat a light meal, shop first, or shift your Tengu no Yu visit to another time instead of relying on a restaurant table.
