Harumichi's pick: the dam

The dam is the main attraction here, not just a backdrop.

Yamba Furusatokan is a place to see the dam and eat dam-themed food. Rest at the footbath, look across the bridge and water, then choose dam curry or dam curry bread. The structure and gorge make this a particularly distinctive station in Kanto.

At a station with such big views, I want to step outside first.
Highlights

Roadside Station Yamba Furusatokan brings together Yamba Dam, Agatsuma Gorge, a footbath and dam curry. Take in the scale of the dam and gorge, then try local flavors at Yamba Shokudo, the Y Shop or the farm shop before your next stop.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Yamba Dam makes a strong impression

The landscape and terrain are the main attractions here. It is worth exploring beyond the station buildings.

02

Easy to linger over a footbath and a meal

There is scenery to see, a place to warm your feet and food to enjoy, even on a short stop.

03

A gateway to Agatsuma Gorge and Kusatsu

It fits easily into an itinerary that includes a gorge walk or a journey toward the hot spring areas.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

First-time visitors

See the scenery first

On arrival, head toward the lake first. After seeing the scale of the dam and bridge, visit Yamba Shokudo; the dam curry will feel like part of the journey, not just a local specialty.

Lakeside view → Yamba Shokudo → farm shop.

Do not push on in strong wind or rain.

Nature walks

Walk in Agatsuma Gorge

On a day with more time, add a gorge walk to make the stop more memorable.

Station → Agatsuma Gorge → hot spring area.

Check path conditions and the season.

Hot spring trips

A break en route to Kusatsu or Manza

Pause for a footbath and a meal before or after the mountain roads. Freshly baked bread from the Y Shop and flower bean sweets from the farm shop also give you something to eat in the car.

Kan-Etsu Expressway area → Yamba → Kusatsu area.

In winter, check closure days and road information first.

A half-day drive

On a first visit, make a loop through the surrounding area

Start with dam curry and shopping at Roadside Station Yamba Furusatokan, then, if you feel like exploring, continue to Yamba Dam, the Yanba Miharashi-dai viewpoint and Agatsuma Gorge. The station works well as an entrance to the area.

Station → Yamba Dam and Yanba Miharashi-dai viewpoint → Agatsuma Gorge or Kawarayu Onsen.

Restaurant, shop and nearby attraction hours can change from day to day; check official information just before visiting.

A 30–45 minute break while passing through

Take a taste of the area with you, even on a short stop

If you cannot stay long, choose something beyond a restroom break: Y Shop dam curry bread or bean-filled daifuku (a sweet rice cake), or flower bean sweets or highland vegetables from the farm shop. Opening it in the car or at home will bring back the stop.

Park → restroom → Y Shop and farm shop → quick look toward the lake → depart.

Popular items can sell down during the day, so stop early if there is something you want.

On busy days, use the station to reset

On holidays and event days, pick priorities among dam curry, the farm shop and a restroom break. If the restaurant is crowded, leave room to switch to Y Shop bread or sweets from the farm shop.
