Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Laran Fujioka is a highway oasis accessible from both Fujioka Parking Area on the Joshinetsu Expressway and local roads. Around its circular plaza are Märchen Plaza with a Ferris wheel, Fureai Plaza with a fountain, a farm produce shop, European-style restaurant Vendémure, and Gateau Festa Harada. Harumichi Kitami suggests deciding what to eat and what to take home before walking around. Beyond a quick expressway stop, it is a place for children to play briefly while adults choose food and souvenirs associated with Gunma.

Harumichi’s break plan

A choice of food makes an expressway break more useful.

Harumichi Kitami sees Laran Fujioka as more than a place to decide where to have lunch. Browse vegetables at the farm shop, choose a restaurant, take home a sweet, and let the children play briefly at the Ferris wheel. Even in a short travel break, the group can divide its time among eating, shopping and playing.

Play

A quick change of pace at the Ferris wheel or plaza.

Eat

Choose soba, ramen, sushi, Western-style food or sweets according to your appetite.

Shop

Browse farm-fresh vegetables, flowers and confectionery together, and take home a taste of the area even on a short stop.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Turn an expressway break into a food stop

Accessible from both Fujioka Parking Area and local roads, with restaurants, a farm shop, souvenirs and a convenience store to choose from in one stop.

02

A Ferris wheel children will remember

The small Ferris wheel at Märchen Plaza and the plaza turn a simple restroom break into a little playtime.

03

Choices for meals and sweets

Soba noodles, ramen, sushi, Western-style meals and sweets give you alternatives, so even on busy days you need not depend on a single restaurant.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Family road trips

A break during an expressway drive

Decide on a meal when you arrive, then add a short visit to the Ferris wheel or plaza after eating before continuing your journey.

Fujioka Parking Area or local-road car park → meal → Märchen Plaza → next destination.

The car parks and restaurants tend to be busy at lunchtime on holidays. Going a little outside the meal rush makes it easier to move around.

A local outing

Before or after sightseeing around Fujioka

Have lunch and shop at the station, then continue to Fujino Saku Oka in wisteria season or Sakurayama Park in the winter-cherry season.

Station → Fujino Saku Oka, or station → Sakurayama Park.

Wisteria and winter-cherry blooms and illumination dates change; check seasonal information before setting out.

Uncertain weather

Focus on food on a rainy day

Keep outdoor play short and focus on the Flower Exchange Hall, a meal, the farm shop and confectionery shopping.

Car park → meal → Flower Exchange Hall → farm shop and souvenirs.

Weather changes how usable the Ferris wheel and outdoor plaza are. Follow the day’s notices for individual shops as well.

A half-day drive

On a first visit, make a simple loop beyond the station

Get a sense of the dining and shopping choices at Michi-no-Eki Laran Fujioka, then add a stop for flowers or history. Using the station as a gateway to Fujioka rather than the end of the trip can make the outing more rewarding.

Station → Fujino Saku Oka or the area around Fujioka History Museum → journey home.

Hours for dining, shopping and nearby facilities can change by day; check official information shortly before visiting.

A 30–45 minute break while passing through

Take a memory of the area home even on a short stop

If time is limited, choose a soft-serve ice cream or a sweet instead of stopping only for the restroom. Opening it in the car or after you get home gives the stop a lasting reminder.

Park → restroom → farm shop or shop → take a photo → depart.

Popular items may sell out as the day goes on, so stop early if you have something specific in mind.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★★☆

Parking, restrooms, food and shopping can be handled in short stages around the plaza.

Keep time spent carrying a baby short, and plan to rest at the Flower Exchange Hall or a restaurant.

Ages 2–3
★★★★★

A brief stop at the fountain plaza or small amusement area can lift spirits after time in the car.

Break the visit into short spells of eating, looking around and moving instead of asking young children to walk for a long time.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

The Ferris wheel, plaza and sweets together can feel like a play outing, even on a short stop.

Add a place to take one photo after the meal to make the detour less dull.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

A trip extending to Fujino Saku Oka or the area around Fujioka History Museum can turn a meal break into a memory of the region.

Choose wisteria in spring, or winter cherries and illuminations from autumn into winter.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Spaces used for events

Fureai Plaza

The plaza becomes a focal point during stage events and the illumination season. Allow more time than for a meal-only stop on event days.

Multipurpose space

Photo exhibitions, other displays and sales events may take place here. It can also offer a reason to stop on a rainy day.

Märchen Plaza

If you are coming for the Ferris wheel or small rides, check operating times and weather before heading over.

Flower Exchange Hall

A place to browse flowers associated with Fujioka and rest indoors. Seasonal flowers can also make a souvenir.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Look beyond the station for spring wisteria and autumn-to-winter cherries or illuminations

Food and shopping can fill a visit to the station alone, while Fujino Saku Oka in spring, Sakurayama Park in autumn and winter, or the station illuminations can become the main event. Adding just one seasonal destination turns the break into a Fujioka memory.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Opening hours, closing days, individual shop schedules and event days can change. Check official notices shortly before visiting.
  • Car parks and restaurants tend to be busy around lunchtime on holidays. Eating before the lunch rush or shopping first can leave you more choices.
  • Weather affects the Ferris wheel and fountain plaza. When visiting with children, identify an indoor place to rest as well.
  • Add Fujino Saku Oka in wisteria season, or Sakurayama Park and illuminations from autumn into winter, to make more of your station visit.
  • When using the expressway, the route depends on the Fujioka Parking Area side; from local roads, it depends on where you park. Note your return direction at the start.
  • Seasonal products, events and temporary closures change quickly, so check official notices shortly before visiting.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Farm shop
    Farm produce shop
Pick up freshly harvested Fujioka vegetables and flowers for the journey home.
  • Restaurant
    European-style restaurant Vendémure
For a seated Western-style meal made with local ingredients.
  • Sweets and souvenirs
    Gateau Festa Harada
A useful choice for quickly adding Gunma gifts to your shopping.
  • Confectionery
    Toraya Honten and Nebokedo
Add a sweet treat to open in the car or after you get home.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Lunch

Soba, ramen, sushi and Western-style meals

If your group wants different things, walking once around the plaza before choosing a restaurant can help everyone agree.

Seats may be scarce at the lunchtime peak; eat earlier or leave time to switch to sweets or shopping.

Sweets

Harada, Toraya Honten and Nebokedo

Even on a short break, choosing a sweet to open in the car or at home makes the stop memorable.

Souvenirs

Gunma and Fujioka products, and farm-fresh vegetables

Handy for expressway travellers buying a few more gifts: vegetables, flowers and sweets can all be browsed in one visit.

Options when crowded

Confectioners, farm shop and convenience store

If the restaurant is busy, switch to something to take home or something quick to eat.

Something to enjoy later

Rusks, Japanese sweets and Fujioka vegetables

Choose something to open at home or at your accommodation, rather than eating everything on site, to extend the pleasure of the trip.

Seasonal finds

Flowers, vegetables and limited event items

The shelves change during wisteria season, the autumn festival and the illumination period. Look beyond the regular products to the seasonal displays.

Events and seasonal products can end quickly; check official notices just before your visit.
