Harumichi’s roadside note

A stop that helps you feel ready to drive a little farther.

At Shirasawa, first consider how far you want to travel today and whether a bath fits. Pause in the parking area, use the toilets, and choose a vegetable or konnyaku item at Za Shirasawa. If time permits, look out toward Mount Akagi and the river terraces from Bōkyō no Yu. A stop here can make the next stretch of Route 120 feel calmer.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Shirasawa brings Shirasawa Kogen Onsen Bōkyō no Yu and the Za Shirasawa farm market together on one site, making it a useful stop for a drive into the mountains from Numata. Before or after following National Route 120 toward Fukiware Falls or Oze, you can use the toilets and spacious parking area, shop for produce, eat, and bathe in one stop. For a short visit, try vegetables and soft serve; with half a day, add the open-air bath's views and the river terraces.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Plan your visit around the hot spring

Bōkyō no Yu often opens from 10:00 into the evening. With a restaurant and rest area, it offers more than a toilet stop: you can relax before driving on. If you plan to bathe, decide whether to eat and shop first or make a quick purchase afterward.

02

Take something home from the farm market

Za Shirasawa is the place to look for local vegetables, konnyaku (a firm food made from konjac), fruit, and processed mountain produce. Numata is also associated with apples and highland vegetables, and the selection changes with the season. Pick up one item before leaving the hot spring so the Shirasawa stop continues at home.

03

River terrace views distinguish this stop

Numata's river terraces—stepped landforms shaped by the river—are visible from Bōkyō no Yu and along Route 120. See the scenery first on a clear day; in rain or fog, focus on bathing and shopping instead. It is easy to adjust the visit to the weather.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Days heading toward Oze, Katashina or Fukiware

Refresh before or after Route 120

Before or after leaving the Numata Interchange for the mountains, combine parking, a toilet stop, farm-market shopping and a snack. On a long drive, Za Shirasawa and soft serve can provide a change of pace even without a bath.

Numata Interchange area → Michi-no-Eki Shirasawa → Fukiware Falls and Katashina area

Tourist traffic on Route 120 increases on weekends and holidays. Leave room to switch from a planned lunch to shopping or a snack.

Adults, older travelers, rainy days and days with driving fatigue

Spend half a day at Bōkyō no Yu

Arrive sometime after 10:00, browse the farm market, bathe, then eat lunch at the restaurant for a half-day visit on site. On a clear day, leave time to enjoy the view from the open-air bath.

Parking → Za Shirasawa → Bōkyō no Yu → restaurant → shop

Admission, last entry and closure days can change. Check official notices when bathing is the main purpose.

Driving break with toddlers

Keep visits short with young children

Use the spacious parking area, toilets, farm market and soft serve in short stages. If bathing, account for restrictions on mixed bathing and possible sleepiness afterward; leave time before the next drive.

Toilets → farm market → soft serve → hot spring if needed

Young children may tire during a longer stay. Choose one main purpose for shopping or resting before you arrive.

Short walk on a clear day

Add the river terraces on a scenic day

See the landforms visible from Bōkyō no Yu again from Amagoi-yama or a roadside viewpoint. If you have no time to walk, the view from the station still conveys Shirasawa’s setting.

Michi-no-Eki Shirasawa → river-terrace viewpoint → return

Amagoi-yama is closer to a light hike than a quick sightseeing stop. Consider shoes, weather and sunset.

Days for a seasonal detour

Combine flowers and a waterfall

From spring to autumn, the location works well with Fukiware Falls, Kichijō-ji temple known for its flowers, or shopping toward Kawaba. Eat and use the toilets at Shirasawa before setting off.

Michi-no-Eki Shirasawa → Kichijō-ji or Fukiware Falls → return

The Fukiware Falls walking trail closes at night and in winter. In winter, make the hot spring and market the main stops.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Works well for toilets and a short shopping stop.

Bathing adds preparations, so a short Za Shirasawa visit and rest may be easier. Decide what you can reach while carrying the child from the parking area.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Works best as short stages of market shopping, soft serve and rest.

If bathing, leave the next journey unhurried and keep either the meal or shopping brief.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The hot spring and snack can offer a change of pace.

Children this age may enjoy the idea of visiting a mountain hot spring while taking in the scenery. Keep walking short if you also visit the falls or temple.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

An opportunity to talk about river terraces and Fukiware Falls.

Combine bathing, the market, landforms and the waterfall for both learning and rest. On rainy days, focus on the hot spring and a meal.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Keep last orders in mind for lunch

The restaurant has separate lunch and dinner periods. If you visit Fukiware Falls or Kawaba first, decide whether to eat at Shirasawa before leaving or after returning for a bath.

Choose one fewer goal at weekend lunchtime

Trying to fit in the hot spring, a meal, the market and nearby sights can be difficult when places are busy or items sell out. Choose a main purpose such as bathing, shopping or continuing to the falls.
