Start with toilets and a short plan

Fuka's stopover notes

Get organized at the station first, and Kuni's mountain roads become easier for families.

This station gives you a chance to pause before heading farther out. Toilets, food, shopping, and the hot spring are all on site, so you can decide whether to visit flowers, moss, or the lake after checking the children's mood and the weather. For shopping, try flower beans or maitake; for food, Shirasuna or Kuni rest cafe. In rain, finish at the hot spring without forcing in another walk.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Kuni is a mountain roadside station bringing together the Kuni Tourist Products Center, Kuni-no-Sato Shirasuna restaurant, Kuni rest cafe, Ohtoku Onsen Kutsurogi-no-Yu, and Oyado Hanamame lodging. For a short stop, use the toilets and browse local products; before lunch, try soba or curry; on a rainy day, rest indoors and use the hot spring; on a fine day, head to Karaku no Sato, Chatsubomigoke Park, or Lake Nozori. With family, eat, shop, and rest at the station first, then decide whether to add more mountain roads.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A useful rest stop before Kusatsu, with a hot spring on site

Ohtoku Onsen Kutsurogi-no-Yu and Oyado Hanamame lodging are on the station grounds, so you can warm up before setting off as well as eat and shop. Kuni lets you make a stop as short or long as needed before or after the mountain roads.

02

Flower beans, maitake, and konkon zori reveal the Kuni area

At the products center, mountain foods sit alongside handmade crafts. Beyond flower beans and mushrooms, menpa wooden lunch boxes and konkon zori woven sandals make for purchases with a distinctly local character.

03

Nearby choices for different weather

Karaku no Sato offers flowers and light meals; Chatsubomigoke Park offers nature walks in its open season; Lake Nozori makes a half-day highland drive; and the former Oshi Station is a historical stop that can fit into a rainy day. Rest at the station, then extend the trip to suit the weather and your energy.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

While driving National Route 292

A 30-minute break toward Kusatsu

First refresh at the 24-hour toilets, then look at flower beans or mushrooms in the products center. Even without a meal, a glance around the mountain produce shop makes Kuni a memorable stop.

Parking → toilets → tourist products center → departure.

Weather and road conditions change how tiring mountain driving feels. Even on a short stop, allow enough time to rest.

Rainy or cold days, or when children are tired

Keep lunch and a hot spring within the station

Eat at Shirasuna, shop at the products center, then visit Kutsurogi-no-Yu in the afternoon. Eating, shopping, and warming up are all possible on site without adding an outdoor walk, which helps when family members have different energy levels.

Shirasuna → products center → Kutsurogi-no-Yu → Kuni rest cafe.

Kutsurogi-no-Yu usually opens 12:00–20:00, with last admission at 19:30.

Fine days from spring to autumn

A half-day route for flowers and moss

After eating and using the toilets at the station, go to Karaku no Sato or Chatsubomigoke Park. Karaku no Sato is an easy, light flower stop; for the more nature-focused park, check admission hours and your footing before entering.

Michi-no-Eki Kuni → Karaku no Sato → Chatsubomigoke Park → Ohtoku Onsen.

Chatsubomigoke Park closes in winter; after admission, head toward Anajigoku. Watch your footing after rain.

Days with at least half a day and children of elementary school age or older

A highland drive to Lake Nozori

Lake Nozori is a highland lake at about 1,500 m, and its scenery changes markedly in flower season. Eat, get drinks, and use the toilets at the station before leaving so you can take your time by the lake.

Michi-no-Eki Kuni → Lake Nozori → Ohtoku Onsen on the way back.

Winter road closures affect access from late November until early spring. Check mountain weather and how cool it feels even in summer.

Days when you want less nature walking

Visit the former Oshi Station even on a rainy day

When a long outdoor walk is unappealing, the former Oshi Station adds a short encounter with Kuni's mining railway history. Eat and shop at the roadside station, then add just one historical stop.

Michi-no-Eki Kuni → former Oshi Station → Ohtoku Onsen.

The former Oshi Station has more closed days in winter; check its opening days before going.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year
★★★☆☆

Best for a short stop and indoor use.

This is not a place to spend a long time on play equipment. Keep the sequence short: toilets, preparations for feeding or diaper changes, indoor rest, then back to the car. Avoid packing too much in even if you add the hot spring.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Works best when divided into food, sweets, and short moves.

Make eating at Shirasuna or Kuni rest cafe the main activity, browse the shop briefly, then head back. On days extending to Chatsubomigoke or Lake Nozori, prioritize safe footing and nap time.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

One hot spring or flower stop helps keep things interesting.

At this age it is easy to eat, shop, and warm up at the station, then choose Karaku no Sato in fine weather or the hot spring in rain. Avoid adding too much mountain driving.

Elementary school children
★★★★☆

Easy to extend to Chatsubomigoke, Lake Nozori, or the former Oshi Station for a learning stop.

Moss, mining railways, a highland lake, and crafts all offer talking points. Discuss them at the station before heading out. Adults should check winter park and road closures first.

First move

Before or after a mountain drive, giving children one clear reason to leave the car helps everyone settle.

Food

For lunch, choose Shirasuna; for something light, Kuni rest cafe.

Rainy day

Enjoy the station without forcing in a nature walk.

Spaces used for events

Karaku no Sato seasonal opening

From spring to autumn, visit for wildflowers and light meals. It closes for part of winter, so check its operating season before extending your trip from the station.

Chatsubomigoke Park open season

It generally opens from mid-April to the end of November and closes in winter. The moss can be especially striking after rain and when its green is vivid.

Lake Nozori flowers and road conditions

Alpine plants appear from early summer to autumn. Watch for snow and road closures from winter into spring. This is best as a half-day trip after resting at the station.

Nakanojo Tourism Association seasonal tours

Information on walks around Lake Nozori and Chatsubomigoke Park is available for 2026. Check dates and prices with the tourism association.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Shop for mountain foods and crafts

Alongside flower beans, maitake, other mushrooms, and pickles, you can find menpa wooden lunch boxes and konkon zori woven sandals, offering a glimpse of daily life in the Kuni area as well as local ingredients.

Allow half a day beyond the station for Lake Nozori

The highland lake is rewarding, but the mountain road, weather, and road closures affect the trip. Eat and use the toilets at the station, then keep the lakeside plan unhurried.

Choose the hot spring in winter and nature from spring to autumn

Karaku no Sato, Chatsubomigoke Park, and Lake Nozori change with the seasons. When parks or roads close in winter, focus on food, shopping, and the hot spring at the station.

Visitor accounts often remember flower beans, hot springs, and moss

Travel accounts and videos often describe buying flower beans or mushrooms at the station, then using it as a base for the hot spring or Chatsubomigoke, rather than spending a long time at the station itself.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • On Wednesdays, closures at the station and nearby facilities may coincide. Have another option if the meal or hot spring is your main aim.
  • A morning of shopping and food followed by Kutsurogi-no-Yu in the afternoon fits the usual hours.
  • Chatsubomigoke Park has relatively early admission hours and closes in winter. Decide your order before lingering too long at the station.
  • If heading to Lake Nozori, get drinks, use the toilets, and prepare a jacket for children at the station before the mountain drive.
  • In rain, skip an ambitious flower or lake itinerary and stay within the station for Shirasuna, Kuni rest cafe, the products center, and the hot spring.
  • Flower beans, mushrooms, and crafts change with deliveries and seasons; leave room to choose one item you find.
Food

Eating and shopping

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Have lunch

Kuni-no-Sato Shirasuna restaurant

It also serves as tourist information and a rest area, so it suits a stop to eat and choose your next destination before the mountain roads.

Wednesday is the usual closing day. If there is an unscheduled closure or crowds, focus on the shop instead.

Take a light break

Curry, gelato, coffee, and cake at Kuni rest cafe

Good for a lighter stop, children's sweets, or adults' coffee.

The usual hours are 10:00–17:00.

Buy something to take away

Flower beans, maitake, other mushrooms, and pickles

To bring a taste of Kuni home or to your lodging, even one local mountain product makes a memorable purchase.

The selection changes with the season, deliveries, and sellouts.

See local handicrafts

Menpa wooden lunch boxes, konkon zori woven sandals, and dried flowers

The station offers a look at everyday tools and local crafts as well as food.

Craft stock varies.

An alternative on a busy day

Split between shopping, cafe, and hot spring

Instead of relying on the restaurant alone, let companions choose shopping, sweets, or the hot spring to keep the day's plan flexible.

The hot spring usually opens at 12:00, so plan shopping and food for the morning.
