Fuka’s Haga notes

Here, you can warm up as well as fill your shopping bags.

Fuka Mizuno thinks of Roadside Station Haga as a farm shop where you can also take a hot spring bath. Pick pears, buy strawberries, and take home Haga no Megumi rice. Roman no Yu makes it more than a shopping trip. Finish with gelato after your bath, and Haga Town’s gentle appeal stays with you.

Highlights

Roadside Station Haga brings together Yuyu Haga and Haga Onsen Roman no Yu, a day-use hot spring. At Yuyu Farm Shop you can look for the town’s pears, strawberries, rice, and freshly picked vegetables. Haga Gelato serves local flavors such as strawberry marble and pear milk. Next door, Roman no Yu draws on two springs with different mineral qualities. Editor Fuka Mizuno recommends this as a place to fill both your shopping bags and your post-bath spirits. Add Karaoke Sozan Park, Kashi no Mori Park, or pear picking and strawberry farms for a day that works for families or adults seeking a hot spring outing.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A roadside station with a natural hot spring, rare in Japan

The Haga Town Tourism Association and town government describe Roadside Station Haga as comprising Yuyu Haga and Haga Onsen Roman no Yu. Its greatest draw is that you can come for a day-use hot spring as well as shopping.

02

Roman no Yu has two hot spring sources

Roman no Yu describes two springs with different mineral qualities: the indoor “Beauty Skin Bath” and the outdoor “Warming Bath.” You can make this a hot spring outing in its own right, beyond a driving break.

03

Look for pears, strawberries, and rice at the farm shop

JA Hagano recommends tomatoes and melons in spring, cucumbers and eggplants in summer, pears in autumn, and strawberries in winter at Yuyu Farm Shop. Look out, too, for Haga no Megumi, Haga Town’s Koshihikari rice.

04

Haga Gelato turns local fruit into dessert

The Tochigi Prefectural agriculture department highlights strawberry marble, pear milk, and seasonal offerings. They make a sweet stop before or after the hot spring, during a family break, or after farm shopping.

An autumn shopping drive

Taste Haga Town in pear season

Pears take center stage in autumn. Choose pears at the farm shop, then look for pear milk gelato and pear juice to sample more of Haga Town.

Check pear-picking dates, varieties, and stock shortly before your visit; they change with the season.
