Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

For visitors coming for the play equipment and play areas

The official site lists a lawn, outdoor play equipment and a BørneLund indoor children's play area. You can choose outdoor activity or indoor play; planning how to fit it around meals and shopping makes the visit easier.

02

Choose from the food court, bread and gelato

The food court offers meals, the bakery has food to take away, and gelato is a sweet option. The official food guide lists Bakery's Kitchen Ohana and Gelato Terrace Chikusei.

03

Plan your order of stops around each shop's hours

The main roadside station and shops on its grounds have different hours. For an early morning or evening visit, or a particular shop, check both this page's hours table and the latest official information.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive toward Oyama, Yuki or Sakuragawa

Make a Route 50 lunch stop a little more enjoyable

A convenience store would do for an ordinary break, but here you can choose Shimodate ramen, Hitachi Aki soba, bakery bread or gelato. People eating, browsing the produce market and resting in the plaza can all spend time on the same grounds.

On the Shimodate Bypass of National Route 50; easy to include when coming from the Sakuragawa-Chikusei interchange.

Food outlets can get busy at lunchtime, so shifting your visit a little may make it more relaxed.

Families with preschool children who want outdoor play and a meal in one stop

A play area makes a family drive easier

The lawn, outdoor play equipment and indoor play area make this an enjoyable station for children. A little play before or after a meal or shopping can change the mood of a drive. With an infant, it helps to locate the toilets and diaper-changing area.

Choose among the lawn, play equipment and indoor play area to suit your mood.

In midsummer, avoid spending too long moving between outdoor areas, and make use of places to cool down.

Drives with dogs and breaks on long journeys

A short break for dogs at the dog run and on a walk

The dog run gives a dog that has been sitting in the car a chance for a change of pace. People can visit the produce market or cafe while the dog gets a break at the dog run or on a walk.

Make the dog run or a nearby walk a short break.

On crowded or event days, do not push it; keep an eye on the heat too.

Days spent driving until evening or when you want to wash off the day's sweat

Add a hot spring bath for a half-day outing

Akeno Genkikan in Chikusei City has baths using natural hot spring water, an open-air bath, a heated pool and a gym. After food and shopping at Grand Terrace Chikusei, a bath on the way home turns the station into the starting point for a short trip.

Grand Terrace Chikusei → Akeno Genkikan. Bath facilities: 10:00–22:00; some facilities close at 21:30.

Closed on the second and fourth Wednesdays, among other days. Check opening information if you plan to bathe.

A short adult sightseeing trip or a rainy-day detour

For a cultural detour, visit the Itaya Hazan Memorial Museum and Shimodate Museum of Art

The Itaya Hazan Memorial Museum, Shimodate Museum of Art and central library are nearby. After food and shopping, a short detour introduces Chikusei's culture.

From Grand Terrace Chikusei, the Itaya Hazan Memorial Museum is about 1.8 km away and Shimodate Museum of Art about 2.0 km.

Exhibition venues have closing days; check whether they are open on the day you visit.

Photography enthusiasts and families wanting a short outdoor walk

On a clear day, add views of Mount Tsukuba

Grand Terrace Chikusei's appeal extends beyond the station. Hakojima Retarding Basin and Kokai River Fureai Park add Mount Tsukuba views and riverside seasonal scenery. One nature stop after eating and shopping can leave a stronger impression of Chikusei.

Grand Terrace Chikusei → Hakojima Retarding Basin / Kokai River Fureai Park.

Flowers and views vary with the season and weather.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Where you park affects how comfortable your break is

Choose a space close to the facilities or one with less traffic, according to how you want to rest. At night or early morning, also consider noise from the large-vehicle area.

  2. 2
Toilets and a cafe make breaks easier

With 24-hour toilets, massage chairs, a cafe and light meals, you have several ways to rest when tired.

  3. 3
If it is busy, light food is appealing too

When Shimodate ramen or soba outlets are busy, the bakery or cafe offers another choice.

  4. 4
The option of a bath on the way home

Add Akeno Genkikan to finish leisurely after food and shopping.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Spaces used for events

Outdoor stage

A venue for live music and performances. Notices in July 2026 advertised a MOZAIK live show and a performance by the Shimodate Technical High School jazz band.

Lawn

A suitable setting for markets, sales and outdoor events. Craft markets and Megumi no Megumi-ichi are examples of events enjoyed while walking outside.

Under the connecting deck

Sometimes used for short events such as balloon performances.

Multipurpose room

An indoor venue for events such as regional product fairs. A July 2026 Hokkaido product fair was advertised for this room.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A reason to return for eggs and vegetables

This station is for more than tourists. Some people use the produce market and app visit points for everyday shopping. It feels like a local kitchen as well as a travel stop.

Five minutes of preparation before children play can bring peace of mind

The play equipment and plaza mean more time outside in summer. With an infant, first locate the toilets, diaper-changing facilities and a cool place before play. Spend the first five minutes preparing to enjoy the visit.

On event days, the station becomes the destination

Events use the outdoor stage, multipurpose room and lawn, drawing visits specifically for the event rather than incidental shopping. Check official notices and Instagram before going; the experience can change from day to day.

For nature, extend the trip to Hakojima Retarding Basin and the Kokai River

Going beyond the station plaza to Hakojima Retarding Basin or Kokai River Fureai Park adds views of Mount Tsukuba and seasonal riverside scenery. Together, food and scenery make Chikusei memorable.

An adult outing can turn to Shimodate's cultural sites

Despite the station's large scale and family focus, the Itaya Hazan Memorial Museum and Shimodate Museum of Art make for a calmer half-day. Even on a rainy day, you can pair station food with cultural sites.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Illustrative image — not an on-site photograph
Have a substantial meal

Shimodate ramen / Hitachi Aki soba / King Pork dishes

A good way to turn a Route 50 lunch break into an outing. Even when companions want different things, they can choose noodles, soba or meat dishes. Hitachi Aki soba is a regional buckwheat variety.

Lunch can be busy; avoid the peak or keep a snack or dessert as an alternative.

Buy food for the car

Bakery's Kitchen Ohana / Seicomart

A satisfying choice even on a short break. Bread or convenience-store food can help if a child suddenly gets hungry.

Popular items may run low depending on the time of day.

Add something sweet

Gelato / fondant chocolate / crepes

A pleasant extra stop after a meal. Gelato or crepes can make a visit to the roadside station memorable.

When eating outside, choose a spot according to the heat, wind and crowds.

Keep options for morning and night

Starbucks / Seicomart

The cafe and convenience store offer a break outside the main station's hours, useful on an early departure or an evening drive home.

Their hours differ from those of the main station shops and produce market.

Take something home

Farm produce market / eggs / local vegetables / souvenirs

This is more than a sightseeing stop. Seasonal vegetables, eggs and processed foods can give you a reason to return.

Produce varies by season and time of day. Come earlier if you have a particular item in mind.
