How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First on arrival
Check the crowds at the farm shop and food outlets

At lunchtime, check Date Shokuan first. If it is busy, you can choose bread, mochi, gelato or the café instead.

For lunch
Make Date chicken or Date herb chicken your first choice

Date Shokuan's hours are generally 11:00–15:00. For dishes made with local ingredients, look for Date chicken kamameshi (rice cooked in a pot) or oyakodon (chicken and egg over rice).

For something sweet
Makiba no Jersey and Fukunotsuki

Gelato, freshly pounded mochi and the café make for a light break. On hot days, gelato alone is a good reason to stop.

To take something home
Peaches, vegetables, strawberry products and jade noodles

Alongside seasonal produce, strawberry soda and jade noodles made with Ryozen carrot leaves make local souvenirs.

With children
Eat at the station, play at Children's Village

For longer play, drive to Ryozen Children's Village, which has outdoor activities and an indoor museum.

For an adult half day
Ryozen's nature and Kosaikan

A short hike, autumn leaves or a day bath can turn a meal stop into time in the mountains.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Choose the food you want from Date, even on a short stop

Date chicken, Date herb chicken, Date vegetables, freshly baked bread, freshly pounded mochi (rice cakes), gelato, beef tongue and miso-flavored fried chicken offer many ways into the local food scene. Lunch, a sweet snack or food to take home can all be found around the same building.

02

Just off Ryozen IC, a convenient stop between Fukushima and Soma

At the entrance to Ryozen IC on the Tohoku Chuo Expressway, the station makes a convenient break on National Route 115. Combine a meal and shopping between drives, then decide whether to head into the mountains or continue toward Soma or Fukushima.

03

Explore beyond the station for more of Ryozen

Add Ryozen Children's Village, the Mount Ryozen trailhead, Kosaikan and Ryozen Shrine for a day in the mountains that goes beyond food. Eating and shopping at the station can fill a stop, while good weather invites a walk in nature or a bath.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive between Fukushima City and the Soma area

Turn a Route 115 lunch break into a Date meal

Just off Ryozen IC, the station is easy to include as a lunch stop. Eat Date chicken or Date herb chicken at Date Shokuan, browse fruit and vegetables at the farm shop, then add gelato after your meal.

At the Ryozen IC entrance on National Route 115; a convenient place to eat, shop and use the toilets in one stop.

Date Shokuan mainly serves lunch. If you arrive late, consider bread, mochi, the café or gelato instead.

A day when you do not want a full restaurant meal

Sweets and shopping make even a short break satisfying

With gelato from Makiba no Jersey, freshly pounded mochi, the bakery and Café de Repos, you can enjoy the station without a full meal. Date City fruit and processed foods can continue the experience after you return to the car.

Farm produce market → gelato or bread → retail area.

Popular sweets and breads may sell out as the day goes on. Come early for something specific.

Families with preschool and elementary school children

With children, eat first and then head to Children's Village

Use the station for food and shopping, then play at Ryozen Children's Village. Its giant slide, athletics course, museum and hiking trails give energetic children more to do outdoors than the station alone.

Date no Sato Ryozen → Ryozen Children's Village; roughly 20 minutes by car.

Children's Village closes in winter and on some Wednesdays. Its indoor museum is also an option on hot or rainy days.

Hiking on Mount Ryozen or an autumn foliage drive

Before or after a mountain walk, stop here for food and toilets

Use the toilets and pick up drinks and a snack before heading to the Mount Ryozen trailhead; return for gelato or a meal. During autumn foliage season, the trailhead area can be busy, so the station is a useful backup rest stop.

Date no Sato Ryozen → Mount Ryozen trailhead; roughly 20 minutes by car.

Mount Ryozen has rocky sections. If you want a gentler outing, choose Kosaikan or Children's Village rather than pushing for the summit.

Adult travelers, after a hike, or a half day ending in the evening

Add a bath after eating to ease the journey home

Ryozen Kosaikan offers accommodation and day bathing amid Mount Ryozen's scenery. Food and shopping at the station followed by a bath at Kosaikan make a short drive into a half day trip.

Date no Sato Ryozen → Ryozen Kosaikan; roughly 20 minutes by car.

Bathing hours, closures and meal service may change; check Kosaikan's official information.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

The nursing room, multipurpose toilet and diaper-changing table make it a convenient rest stop. For a longer play break, check conditions at Children's Village and drive there.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Gelato and bread can make a pleasant station stop, but space to run around is limited. Add Children's Village for outdoor play.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Children this age can enjoy sweets, bread, fried chicken and the farm shop. Combine the stop with Children's Village's play equipment and museum for a half day.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Children can choose their own food and continue to Ryozen Children's Village or a short nature walk. Match any hike to their stamina and the weather.

The station is mainly for eating, toilets and shopping

Plan it as a stop before or after Children's Village or Mount Ryozen, rather than a place for hours of play.

Keep summer gelato and hydration stops brief

On days with a lot of outdoor travel, cool down at the station and adjust plans without overdoing it.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Take a driving break just off Ryozen IC

You can rest soon after leaving the expressway, whether heading toward Fukushima City or Soma.

  2. 2
If the restaurant is busy, choose sweets or bread

Keep bread, mochi, gelato and the café in mind as well as lunch at the restaurant to reduce time spent waiting.

  3. 3
Keep a mountain outing short if the weather calls for it

Weather changes the experience at Mount Ryozen and Children's Village. In strong wind, heat or rain, a bath at Kosaikan or shopping at the station may suit the day better.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A short stop just for gelato works well

Even without time for a meal, Makiba no Jersey, mochi and bread offer a taste of Date no Sato. In hot weather, sweets may suit you better than a restaurant meal.

Toilets and parking help break up a journey

The information area and toilets are open 24 hours, and the Ryozen IC entrance location makes the station useful on a long drive. Lunch and shopping crowds can overlap on holidays, so leave a little extra time to park.

For families, connect the station with Children's Village

After eating and using the toilets at the station, head to Ryozen Children's Village for play equipment, a museum and hiking options. Include indoor activities on rainy or extremely hot days.

Pair Mount Ryozen's autumn leaves or hiking with station food

Before and after a Mount Ryozen hike or autumn foliage outing, the station makes a convenient rest stop. Food and shopping also help companions who prefer less walking.

A full meal

Date chicken kamameshi / Date herb chicken oyakodon / Date no Sato plate

A lunch that brings together Date chicken, vegetables and rice is a strong reason to stop here specifically for food.

A light meal

Ryozen Bakery 115 / Café de Repos

Good when you want to avoid a heavy meal while driving or your companions have different appetites.

The bakery sometimes announces temporary closures, so check official news if it is your destination.

Add something sweet

Makiba no Jersey / Freshly pounded mochi: Fukunotsuki

Gelato and mochi make a stop worthwhile even without lunch, especially on hot days, with children or when time is short.

Offerings may vary by season and time of day.

Buy food for the car

Freshly baked bread / miso fried chicken / snacks from the retail area

Pick up easy-to-eat food before driving toward Soma or Fukushima. This is also an option for avoiding the lunch rush.

Mind hot or easily melted items in the season and temperature inside your car.

Take something home

Peaches / vegetables / strawberry soda / Ryozen jade noodles

Date City produce and local processed foods bring a taste of the trip to your table at home, especially in fruit season.

Farm produce varies with season, weather and time of day. Morning is best if fruit is your priority.
