Shunsuke’s Kunimi notes

Sort out meals, toilets, and play, then head for peaches and the earthwork.

Shunsuke Fujishiro sees Atsukashi no Sato as a useful place to plan a family drive. Start with the toilets and nursing room, then Tunagaroom or a meal. After that, browse the peach market, try a Kunimi burger, or visit Atsukashi Millennium Park. Add more of Kunimi Town as the children’s mood and weather allow.

Highlights

Roadside Station Kunimi Atsukashi no Sato is a Kunimi Town hub on National Route 4, about five minutes from the Kunimi interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. It brings together meals, farm-direct shopping, indoor play, and lodging. From June to late September, its market becomes a “peach station,” with peaches, Kunimi-grown vegetables, prepared foods, and rice worth browsing. Dining choices include Toukatei (桃花亭), Momotan Cafe, Kunimi Burger & Gelateria, and Kourakuen, covering morning ramen, lunch, sweets, and takeaway. Families with preschool children can use the indoor Tunagaroom wood-play area; on fine days, there is Harappa Square and a dog run. With more time, visit the Atsukashiyama defensive earthwork or the lotus flowers at Atsukashi Millennium Park. Shunsuke Fujishiro suggests sorting out meals, toilets, and rainy-day play first, then exploring Kunimi’s history and fruit.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Come for peaches from June to September

The official shopping guide describes a “peach station” with many peach varieties from June through late September. Kunimi Ichiba also sells Kunimi-grown vegetables and rice, plus prepared dishes from town shops.

02

Dining choices make family meals easier

Toukatei, Momotan Cafe, Kunimi Burger & Gelateria, and Kourakuen offer set meals, seasonal fruit sweets, takeaway, and morning ramen. At busy times, you can choose a snack or sweets if a full meal takes longer.

03

An indoor break for preschoolers, even in rain

Tunagaroom is an indoor wood-play area that preschool children and their guardians can use free of charge. A nursing room, diaper-changing tables, and 24-hour toilets also help families on long drives.

04

Kunimi’s history and lotus flowers lie beyond the station

Nearby places include the Atsukashiyama defensive earthwork, Atsukashi Millennium Park, Atsukashi History Museum, and the Okuyama family house. A short outing adds the town’s history to a stop for peaches and burgers.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Route 4 drives from June to late September

Shop first in peach season

In peach season, start at Kunimi Ichiba before eating. Varieties and ripeness affect how peaches travel, so decide how many to buy, consider cooling and your journey home, then have lunch.

Park → Kunimi Ichiba → Toukatei or Kunimi Burger → Momotan Cafe.

Peach arrivals, varieties, and sellouts change daily.

Preschool families, very hot days, and rain

Take a rainy-day break with children

Tunagaroom is an indoor wood-play area, giving children a change of pace when outdoor play is difficult. With a nursing room and diaper-changing tables, meals, toilets, and play are easy to fit into one stop.

Toilets and nursing → Tunagaroom → cafe or takeaway → market.

Tunagaroom closes Tuesdays and pauses at midday. It is for preschool children and their guardians.

A meal-only stop

Taste Kunimi on a short stop

Kunimi Burger & Gelateria offers a quick taste of Kunimi. If you have time to sit down, try Toukatei; for a sweet break, choose Momotan Cafe. Companions can choose according to their appetite.

Kunimi Burger → gelato or cafe → back to the car.

At lunchtime, allow for ticket-machine or takeaway queues; you can browse the market first.

A short walk on a fine day

Continue to the earthwork and lotus

“Atsukashi” in the station’s name comes from Mount Atsukashi. After food and shopping, Atsukashi Millennium Park and the Atsukashiyama defensive earthwork connect the history of the Genpei conflict with the lotus season in Kunimi.

Roadside station → Atsukashi Millennium Park → Atsukashiyama defensive earthwork → Atsukashi History Museum.

Lotus flowers are especially appealing in the morning. In summer, prepare for heat and check parking guidance.
