How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Start here
Local-products shop

Look at the vegetables, fruit, prepared foods, and Soma souvenirs first, then decide on lunch or a trip toward the coast.

For a meal
Kitchen Nittaki

The menu makes it easy to choose local specialties such as Kanesukezuke, Soma kimchi, and Soma-grown aosa seaweed.

A sweet break
Tonosama Milk Stand SOMA

Even without a restaurant meal, soft serve or a smoothie can make a short break for children.

With children
Drive to Ohama Children's Park

The station suits a short stop. For playground equipment and indoor play, drive about 15 minutes toward the coast.

Coastal shopping
Hamanoeki Matsukawaura

If seafood is the goal, take a break at the roadside station before continuing to this coastal market.

Add some scenery
Matsukawaura Prefectural Natural Park

On a clear day, add the Ozu-Matsukawa Line and the Matsukawaura waterfront to your Soma visit.

Shunsuke's detour notes

Leave time to explore Soma's coast beyond the station.

Michi-no-Eki Soma is not a place to spend half a day on playground equipment. Use it for toilets, a meal, shopping, and sweets, then continue to Ohama Children's Park or Hamanoeki Matsukawaura to keep a family day moving. Choose Kanesukezuke pork or Soma-grown aosa for lunch, pause for Tonosama Milk, and head for the Matsukawaura waterfront if the weather is good. A Route 6 break can become an introduction to Soma.

Separating the meal stop from the play stop makes a Soma detour much easier.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Soma is a roadside rest stop on National Route 6. Its building evokes a Soma Nomaoi festival encampment, and brings together a local-products shop, Kitchen Nittaki, Tonosama Milk Stand SOMA, and road information. At the station, choose Soma-grown vegetables and souvenirs, grilled pork loin marinated in Kanesukezuke seasoning, ramen with locally harvested aosa seaweed, or soft serve. With more time, continue to Hamanoeki Matsukawaura, Ohama Children's Park, and the Matsukawaura waterfront. Editor Shunsuke Asakura suggests a family sequence of toilets, food, shopping, time for children to play, and a coastal detour.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A Route 6 break becomes a taste of Soma

Kitchen Nittaki focuses on Fukushima-raised meats and local ingredients. Try a set meal of special pork loin seasoned with Kanesukezuke, a Soma pork specialty marinated in miso; pork kimchi made with Soma kimchi and Fukushima pork; or ramen topped with Soma-grown aosa seaweed. Even a short lunch stop can bring a taste of the area.

02

Tonosama Milk Stand SOMA makes a family break easier

Soft serve, parfaits, smoothies, and coffee are made with milk and yogurt sourced from the farm run by Michitane Soma (相馬行胤), the 34th head of the former Soma domain. They offer a sweet break even when you skip a sit-down meal.

03

Shop for vegetables, prepared foods, and gifts with everyday use in mind

The local-products shop sells vegetables and fruit grown in Soma City, local specialties, crafts, and prepared foods. You can look for something for the dinner table as well as a travel souvenir.

04

For a proper play break, head beyond the station

The station mainly offers shopping, meals, and a toilet stop. When the children need room to play, drive toward the coast and combine Ohama Children's Park with Matsukawaura.

05

A gateway to Soma Nomaoi and the coastal scenery

The building is designed to evoke an encampment at the Soma Nomaoi festival. Stop for road information and a meal before heading toward Soma Nakamura Shrine, Hamanoeki Matsukawaura, or Matsukawaura Prefectural Natural Park.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Travelers driving through toward Sendai or Iwaki

Make a Route 6 lunch break a taste of Soma

Use the toilets and check the road information, browse vegetables and gifts in the local-products shop, then go to Kitchen Nittaki. Pork loin with Kanesukezuke seasoning, Soma kimchi, and aosa ramen make even a short stop feel rooted in Soma.

Parking → toilets → local-products shop → Kitchen Nittaki → Tonosama Milk Stand SOMA.

The restaurant opens from late morning until before evening. Crowds or sold-out dishes can affect lunch even before last order, so arrive earlier if a meal is your main reason for stopping.

Families with toddlers through elementary-school children

Reset the children's mood with sweets and a park

Use the station for toilets, sweets, and a little shopping, then move to Ohama Children's Park for active play. For children who need to move around, a park about 15 minutes away by car works better than a long stop at the station.

Roadside station → Tonosama Milk Stand SOMA → Ohama Children's Park → Hamanoeki Matsukawaura.

Ohama Children's Park changes its hours by season, and its indoor facilities can be busy on weekends and public holidays. Avoid packing too much into late afternoon.

Families focused on shopping

Plan at the station before buying coastal seafood

Look at the roadside station's vegetables and prepared foods, then head to Hamanoeki Matsukawaura or the Isobe Fishery Processing Facility direct-sales shop. For a seafood-focused visit, add a coastal market rather than ending the shopping at the roadside station.

Roadside station → Hamanoeki Matsukawaura → Isobe Fishery Processing Facility direct-sales shop.

Seafood varies by season, weather, and landings. The direct-sales shop closes relatively early, so allow time before late afternoon.

A Hamadori coastal drive with uncertain weather

Choose meals and indoor play in rain; Matsukawaura in sunshine

In rain, eat at the roadside station, then visit the indoor play equipment at Ohama Children's Park or shop at Hamanoeki. On a clear, calm day, Matsukawaura Prefectural Natural Park, Lovers' Cape, and the Ozu-Matsukawa Line offer views of the sea and lagoon.

Rain: roadside station → Ohama Children's Park / sun: roadside station → Matsukawaura Prefectural Natural Park.

Wind and heat change how the coast feels. With small children, use the station's toilets and take a break before heading out.

Trips timed to the early-summer festival

Make a short stop before or after Soma Nomaoi

During Soma Nomaoi, traffic and travel times around central Soma and Minamisoma differ from an ordinary day. The roadside station is a useful place for food, shopping, and road information before or after the festival; it is not itself a festival attraction.

Soma Nakamura Shrine area → roadside station → National Route 6 or Soma IC area.

Soma Nomaoi dates, traffic restrictions, and parking are announced each year. Check the official festival schedule before a festival-day trip.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★★☆☆

Toilets, a little shopping, and a sweets break make for a manageable stop.

Do not count on a large play area at the station. Check opening times and how busy the nursing and diaper-changing facilities are before using them.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Good for a soft-serve break and a little shopping.

For longer active play, continue to the area for infants and toddlers at Ohama Children's Park.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

A meal at the station followed by the park or waterfront can make a satisfying outing.

Allow a short stop for the station alone or half a day with nearby places. In rain, consider Ohama Children's Park and its indoor play equipment.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Meals, shopping, Matsukawaura scenery, and Hamanoeki combine easily.

Talk about Soma Nomaoi or Matsukawaura to turn a rest stop into an introduction to the area.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Weather and wind shape a Matsukawaura visit

Matsukawaura combines a lagoon, nori seaweed and clam cultivation, Matsukawaura Bridge, and the Ozu-Matsukawa Line. Heat, wind, and rain along the coast affect how long you will want to stay. A clear day is especially good for extending your visit from the station.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • For lunch, check Kitchen Nittaki's opening hours and last order first.
  • If you skip the restaurant, Tonosama Milk Stand SOMA and the local-products shop still make a useful short stop.
  • If play is the main goal, put Ohama Children's Park in your itinerary instead of waiting at the station.
  • For seafood, continue to Hamanoeki Matsukawaura and the Isobe Fishery Processing Facility direct-sales shop.
  • Wind, heat, and rain change conditions around Matsukawaura. With small children, use the station toilets before heading out.

  • The station closes on January 1 and 2. Nearby direct-sales shops may also close around New Year.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Lunch

Kanesukezuke pork loin / Soma kimchi pork / aosa ramen

Kitchen Nittaki opens from late morning until before evening. Keep your menu choice flexible and pick a dish featuring a local specialty.

Sweets

Soft serve / parfaits / smoothies / coffee

Tonosama Milk Stand SOMA suits a short break for children or a pause for adults before driving on.

Shopping

Sweets / souvenirs / road information
