How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First, decide
whether the dining hall or farm stand is your priority

For lunch, start at Nagai Cafe Shokudo; for a brief stop, choose farm produce and sweets. A first circuit of the shop makes seasonal items easier to spot.

For lunch
Black Lion, Golden Chuka, or Kendama Curry

Choose Nagai Black for visual impact, Golden Chuka for an easy-to-eat bowl, or Kendama Curry for a fun conversation with children.

For a sweet
Uma no Kamishime soft serve

A Nagai sweet with the nutty flavor of an heirloom soybean. It is a good reason to stop even on a day when you do not want a full meal.

To take home
seasonal vegetables, sweets, local sake, and kendama

Look for thin-skinned round eggplants, cherries, miso rice cakes, walnut yubeshi, Nagai pongee silk, and sashiko for both seasonal and local character.

For a short walk
head to the Former Nagai Elementary School First Building

This cultural facility in a wooden school building is easy to reach on foot and adds a Nagai stop even on a rainy day.

To add a season
Ayame Park or the Hyakushu Lake amphibious bus

Early-summer irises and a lake outing can transform a visit. The autumn 2026 amphibious bus departs from Nogawa Manabi-kan; check operating dates and reservations in advance.

Food first

With Riho Hozumi, start with what to eat and what to buy

At Kawa no Minato Nagai, local-named food and seasonal displays matter more than the size of the facility. Black Lion, kendama, Uma no Kamishime, thin-skinned round eggplants, and Nagai pongee silk: follow these names and a rest on Route 287 becomes an entrance to town.

Dining

Taste Black Lion, kendama, and horse-meat culture through the menu.

Farm stand

Choose summer vegetables, peaches, cherries, and winter regional foods by season.

Town walk

After eating, extend the visit briefly to the old school, irises, or the Mogami River.

Highlights

Kawa no Minato Nagai is more than a rest stop on National Route 287: it is a starting point for Nagai food and a walk around town. At Nagai Cafe Shokudo, Nagai Black Ramen, Golden Chuka noodles, Japan’s No. 1 Kendama Curry, and horse-meat chashu bring local names and flavors to the table. The farm stand and local-products shop carry thin-skinned round eggplants, cherries, gyoja-na greens, Uma no Kamishime heirloom soybeans, miso rice cakes, walnut yubeshi, Nagai pongee silk, sashiko stitching, and kendama toys. After eating and shopping, allow time to walk or rent a bicycle to the Former Nagai Elementary School First Building, Ayame Park, or the Mogami River waterfront.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The dining hall menu is an introduction to Nagai culture

Nagai Black Ramen, Golden Chuka noodles, Japan’s No. 1 Kendama Curry, Black Lion jajamen, and horse-meat chashu: lunch here is also a way to encounter the Black Lion tradition, kendama, horse-meat food culture, and Nagai’s water and soy sauce.

02

Farm produce and souvenirs bring seasonal Yamagata home

Look for tomatoes, zucchini, thin-skinned round eggplants, peaches, and cherries in summer; in winter, look for miso rice cakes and pickled apples. Walnut yubeshi, dango, local sake, Nagai pongee silk, sashiko, and kendama mean you can choose local craft as well as food.

03

Close to town, so it is easy to turn a break into a short outing

Near Nagai Station and the town center, the station connects easily to the Former Nagai Elementary School First Building, Ayame Park, and the Mogami River waterfront. Rental bicycles are generally available from about April to November, so you can leave the car and switch to a short town walk.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A midday drive on National Route 287

Make your lunch stop a taste of Nagai

At Nagai Cafe Shokudo, consider Nagai Black Ramen, Golden Chuka ramen, Japan's No. 1 Kendama Curry, or horse-meat chashu ramen. Choose the striking presentation, a lighter bowl, or a curry to talk about with children.

Arrive at the roadside station → check how busy the dining hall is → browse the farm stand → have a meal or soft-serve ice cream.

The dining hall closes earlier than the main station facilities, so do not rely on a late-afternoon stop for a meal.

A short break or souvenir shopping before the drive home

Take home seasonal treats from the Okitama region, even on a shopping-only stop

The farm stand sells local vegetables and fruit; the products area carries sweets, local sake, kendama, Nagai tsumugi textiles, and sashiko embroidery. Look for thin-skinned round eggplants, peaches, and cherries in summer, and miso mochi and pickled apples in winter.

Farm stand → local products area → choose sweets or snacks for the car.

Produce and popular sweets may sell out as the day goes on. Go earlier if you have a particular item in mind.

Rainy days, a short adult town walk, or learning with school-age children

Walk from the station to the old wooden school building

The former Nagai Elementary School First Building is a cultural facility in an early Showa-era wooden schoolhouse. Visitors are also directed to use the roadside station parking lot, making it an easy walk after eating and shopping. Add a sense of Nagai's history to your food stop.

Kawa no Minato Nagai → former Nagai Elementary School First Building; a short detour within walking distance.

The building has closure days, including Mondays; check its opening information if it is your main destination.

Flower trips from mid-June to early July, photography, or three-generation family outings

Add Ayame Park to an early-summer visit

Nagai Ayame Park is especially rewarding during the iris festival. Have lunch and shop at the station, then spend time among the flowers for a fuller Nagai visit.

Roadside station → Ayame Park; a short drive, or use a rental bicycle to take in the town on the way.

During the festival, admission fees, extended opening hours, and bloom conditions may vary. Check the current year's details.

Families with children, an unusual outing, or a day you can book ahead

Ride the amphibious bus on Nagai Hyakushu Lake around summer

The seasonal amphibious bus takes visitors from the roadside station to Nagai Dam and Nagai Hyakushu Lake, then returns. Eat at the station before enjoying the lake. For autumn 2026, departures instead use Nogawa Manabi-kan; check the service for your date.

The roadside-station departure itinerary takes about 75 minutes, traveling by road to Nagai Dam before cruising on the lake. Confirm the departure point for your date.

Advance reservations are generally required. Check non-operating days, available seats, and fares by age before planning around it.

A short walk on a fine day or a stroll after lunch

Continue the station's river story along the Mogami

Nagai has a history as a port town for transport on the Mogami River. After exploring its food and shops, head to the Mogami River footpath or riverside green space to see the town's connection to the water.

Roadside station → paths and green space along the Mogami River. Keep the walk short according to weather and footing.

Watch for strong sun in midsummer and snow or slippery paths in winter; a rest inside the station may be the better choice.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Diaper-changing facilities and 24-hour toilets make a short break convenient.

Keep stroller routes short when the dining hall and shops are busy. The amphibious bus information says children age 2 and under have no separate seat.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Sweets and browsing the shop can be fun, though this is not a place for long indoor play.

If the dining hall wait is long, a brief look around the shops can be a good change of pace.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Kendama Curry, Black Lion soft-serve, the Golden Week festival, and the amphibious bus offer plenty to talk about.

Experiences depend on dates and sometimes reservations; check availability early if one is the purpose of your trip.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Connect kendama, the former Nagai Elementary School First Building, the amphibious bus, and Mogami River history for an educational detour.

Check bicycle rental safety requirements and guidance on accompanying adults before use.

Toilets

Information lists 24-hour toilets, an ostomate-accessible toilet, and a diaper-changing station.

Meals

Noodles, curry, rice bowls, and sweets; children can enjoy choosing by appearance.

Outdoor play

For activities beyond the station, head to Ayame Park, the Mogami River, or the amphibious bus; the station itself does not have a large play structure.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
After parking, check the dining hall and shops indoors first

Parking has 109 spaces for smaller vehicles and seven for large vehicles. On hot or snowy days, decide what to do indoors first to limit walking.

  2. 2
Avoid the lunch rush at the dining hall

For ramen or curry, arriving just after opening or after the peak is easier. Later in the afternoon, focus on sweets and shopping.

  3. 3
Start with nearby places for a town walk

The former Nagai Elementary School First Building is within walking distance. For Ayame Park or the waterfront, consider the weather and footing, and use a car for part of the trip if needed.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

This town-center roadside station makes it easy to explore Nagai

Reviews describe a newer roadside station near Nagai City Hall and a school, close to the Mogami River, with tourist information and a farm stand together. It works well as a starting point for a town walk rather than a destination for large play equipment.

The black ramen's appearance and flavor invite comparison

Nagai Black Ramen looks jet black but is often described as relatively light in flavor. Beyond the photo opportunity, enjoy its local soy sauce and Nagai water.

Uma no Kamishime soft-serve is a sweet worth seeking out

Soft-serve made with heirloom edamame makes a stop worthwhile even without a meal. Children may like Black Lion soft-serve, while adults may appreciate the edamame's roasted aroma.

Official Instagram shows what is in season at the shops

Summer vegetables, thin-skinned round eggplants, peaches, cherries, Tanabata decorations, and iris artwork appear in seasonal shop and local-display updates on social media. Look for what is fresh on the day.

Families can plan around an activity day

This is not a station with large play equipment for a long stay. A Golden Week festival, amphibious-bus ride, Iris Festival, or event at the old school can add an experience for children when dates align.

Allow for shorter hours and winter footing

The main facility has shorter hours in January and February, and dining hall last orders are earlier in winter. Winter local foods are appealing, but for late arrivals or walks through town, allow for conditions and focus on shopping and a rest if needed.

Explore the town without a car, too

The municipal bus lists the Tourist Exchange Center stop, while the route bus lists the Kawa no Minato Nagai Roadside Station stop. These are useful when combining a visit with Nagai Station or a walk through the town center.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The dining hall closes earlier than the main station facility; in late afternoon, plan around shopping and sweets rather than a meal.
  • In winter the main facility is open 9:30–17:00 (listed as January and February on the official site), and dining hall last orders are earlier. Allow for shorter hours and winter road conditions.
  • Rental bicycles are available roughly April–November through the tourist information desk. Check safety guidance for elementary-school children and younger riders, and requirements for the person renting.
  • The amphibious bus is seasonal and generally requires a reservation. For September 5–November 8, 2026, it departs from Nogawa Manabi-kan rather than the roadside station; confirm the meeting point and non-operating days.
  • The Iris Festival, Water Festival, and Black Lion Festival can bring different traffic and crowds from an ordinary rest stop. Arrive by car earlier for more time.
  • Produce, seasonal sweets, and limited-quantity items may run low in the afternoon. Browse the shops first if shopping is your main goal.
  • Municipal and route bus stops are listed here. If combining the station with Nagai Station or a town-center walk, a car is not your only option.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

  • Dining hall
    Nagai Black Ramen
Soy-sauce ramen inspired by the Black Lion, made with local soy sauce and Nagai water.
  • Dining hall
    Golden Chuka ramen
Popular ramen with a clear broth, for those who prefer an easy-to-eat bowl over a dramatic appearance.
  • Dining hall
    Japan's No. 1 Kendama Curry
A playful curry reflecting Nagai's kendama culture and a conversation starter with children.
  • Sweets
    Uma no Kamishime soft-serve
Fragrant soft-serve made with an heirloom edamame variety; a quick taste of Nagai even on a short stop.
Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Local specialties for lunch

Nagai Black Ramen / Golden Chuka ramen / Kendama Curry

A good choice when you want to encounter the Black Lion tradition, Nagai's water, and kendama culture through the menu. Ramen and curry fans can each find something.

Dining hall last orders are 16:00 from a 10:30 opening, or 15:30 from an 11:00 opening in winter. Outside the lunch rush, the shops are easier to browse too.

A hearty meat meal

Horse-meat chashu ramen / thick-cut sauce katsudon / Yamagata beef steak bowl

Choose this for a substantial lunch featuring the meat traditions of Nagai and Okitama, rather than a brief snack stop.

Offerings and menus can change; follow the dining hall's information on the day.

Just a sweet treat

Uma no Kamishime soft-serve / Black Lion soft-serve / sundae

Even without a full meal, sweets made with the local heirloom edamame, or inspired by the Black Lion, offer a quick taste of Nagai.

On hot days, eat before getting back in the car and allow for how quickly ice cream melts.

Browse the seasonal farm stand

Thin-skinned round eggplant / cherries / peaches / gyojana greens / Uma no Kamishime edamame

Visit the farm stand first to take home a taste of the season in Yamagata and Okitama. The day's produce arrivals are part of the appeal.

Popular or limited-quantity items may run low in the afternoon.

Choose souvenirs

Walnut yubeshi / dango / miso mochi / local sake / kendama / Nagai tsumugi textiles

Shopping here includes Nagai's crafts and play culture as well as food.

For winter-only, limited-quantity, or chilled products, consider how long you will carry them.
