How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

For a bite
Gelato at Tento

Look first for La France pear and other seasonal fruit flavors for a quick taste of Tendo.

For shopping
Fruit and souvenirs at Sunpure

The farm shop's highlights change with the season, from cherries in June to La France pears in autumn.

For a break
Koma-no-Yu and the plaza

The footbath, benches, and play equipment give both drivers and children a chance to rest.

Riho's food and shopping perspective

Come for the fruit and sweets first, beyond the onsen name.

Tendo Onsen sits at the entrance to the hot spring district, but Sunpure's farm shop, Tento's La France pear sweets, and outdoor play at Wakuwaku Land are the main pleasures here. Even without a large lunch, gelato, fruit shopping, and a final stop at the footbath make a fitting visit.

Look first

Check the fruit in the farm shop and the gelato flavors. Knowing what is in season makes shopping easier.

Another option

If the restaurant is crowded, switch to the bakery, soft serve, or souvenirs to take away.

To round it off

Add the footbath and shogi piece displays to make this more than a shopping break. Shogi is Japanese chess.

Highlights

At Michi-no-Eki Tendo Onsen, buy Yamagata fruit, pause for gelato or baked goods at Tento, let children play at Wakuwaku Land, and rest your feet at Koma-no-Yu. Riho Okumura recommends it as a weekend drive stop for seasonal produce, La France pears, shogi pieces, and summer water play, with more to enjoy than the onsen name alone. A michi-no-eki is a roadside station.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

La France pears and seasonal fruit draw you in

Tendo is known for La France pears. Sunpure and Tento offer a wide choice of fruit, processed fruit products, gelato, and baked goods to eat or buy.

02

A footbath and outdoor play share one site

The Koma-no-Yu footbath supplied with free-flowing hot spring water, large play equipment, and fountain plaza are close together, making it easy for adults recovering from a drive and children eager to play to follow different interests.

03

The town's shogi pieces add local character

Exhibits at Mori-na Tendo and shogi puzzle plates in the plaza bring Tendo's local character into a break otherwise focused on food and hot springs. Shogi is Japanese chess.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short break on National Route 13

Sweets and shopping in 30 minutes

After a restroom stop, browse seasonal fruit and souvenirs at Sunpure, then choose gelato or something from the bakery at Tento. Even without sitting down in the restaurant, you can take a taste of Tendo with you.

Parking lot → Restrooms → Sunpure → Tento → Depart

The choice of fruit and popular sweets changes through the day. Go earlier if you have something particular in mind.

A family driving break

Let children play, then finish at the footbath

Let children move around at Wakuwaku Land; in hot weather, check whether the fountain plaza is operating before water play. Finish at Koma-no-Yu so the children can burn off energy and adults can rest their feet.

Large play equipment and fountain plaza → Sweets break → Koma-no-Yu

The fountain may stop because of weather or inspections. Keep a change of clothes and towels in the car for a water-play day.

A half-day outing

Continue into the Tendo Onsen district

Eat a little and shop at the roadside station, then head to Ten-no-Yu or the hot spring district. A walk through the district adds another dimension to the Tendo Onsen name beyond the station's footbath.

Michi-no-Eki Tendo Onsen → Ten-no-Yu area → Food and lodging in the hot spring district

The footbath has cleaning hours, and inns and restaurants have different operating days. Check just before extending your visit into the district.

Adults or a rainy day

Discover Tendo through shogi and fruit

When outdoor play is limited, see the shogi piece exhibit at Mori-na Tendo, then add the Tendo City Shogi Museum beside JR Tendo Station. Buy fruit or processed fruit products at Sunpure on the way back for a visit that combines culture and food.

Mori-na Tendo → Tendo City Shogi Museum → Sunpure

The museum has closing days and a last admission time. Especially on a rainy day, decide on your indoor destination first.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for a short break while carrying your child. The footbath and shops are close, but outdoor play is affected by heat and cold.

For a water-play visit, plan ahead for diaper changes, dry clothes, and shade.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Small-child play equipment and the fountain offer a change of pace. A sweets break can make it easier to leave than a long play session.

Fountain water is not drinking water, and the fountain may stop due to weather or inspections.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Large play equipment, the fountain, and shogi puzzle plates offer different ways to play. Add the footbath for a break for the whole family.

Summer water play and the usability of outdoor equipment in winter differ; adjust your visit length to the season.

Elementary school children
★★★★★

Add the exhibits and shogi puzzles of this shogi piece-making town, or go farther to the Tendo City Shogi Museum to learn more.

Visit in fruit season to combine shopping, eating, and local culture in one trip.

Water play

The fountain plaza has days when it is not operating. Bring towels and dry clothes if you expect to get wet.

Restrooms

The roadside station and park can easily be visited from the same parking spot.

Alternative meal options

The restaurant, gelato, bakery, and farm shop takeaway give you options if one place is crowded.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Use the restrooms and road information corner after parking

This is a convenient stop while traveling on National Route 13. On a long drive, take care of your rest break first so you can shop without rushing.

  2. 2
    Choose takeaway items at Sunpure

Consider the length of the return trip when buying fruit or chilled items. Buy sake and heavy souvenirs in an order that makes it easy to return to the car.

  3. 3
Avoid cleaning hours at the footbath

Koma-no-Yu's usual hours are 6:00–21:00, but it is unavailable for cleaning on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 12:00.

Event

Spaces used for events

Around the fountain plaza and outdoor stage, summer festivals and other events change both the length of visits and crowd levels.

Outdoor stage

A frequent venue for live performances and local events. Parking and walking routes differ from an ordinary rest-stop day.

Sunpure and Tento

Seasonal fruit, gelato, and limited items are appealing when fresh, but check for sellouts and changes in opening hours.

Koma-no-Yu footbath

A free place to rest. Check cleaning times when stopping in the morning or before noon.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The fountain is a summer highlight, but allow for stoppages

The fountain plaza adds to a summer visit, but it may stop due to weather or inspections. Keep the playground, gelato, and footbath as options on a day planned around water play.

The footbath works for morning or evening; mind cleaning hours

Koma-no-Yu can be used from 6:00 in the morning to 9:00 at night. It is closed for cleaning from 10:00 to noon on Mondays and Thursdays, so avoid making it the main reason for a late-morning stop then.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Mori-na Tendo's usual hours are 9:00–18:00, and the road information corner is available 24 hours. Sunpure's kitchen serves from 11:00, with last orders at 14:30 on weekdays and 15:00 on Sundays and public holidays; Tento is open 9:30–18:00.
  • Koma-no-Yu's usual hours are 6:00–21:00. It is unavailable for cleaning on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 12:00.
  • The fountain plaza may stop because of weather or inspections. Bring dry clothes and another plan on a water-play visit.
  • Available fruit changes with the season and time of day. An earlier stop is easier during cherry season and the autumn fruit season.
  • When the area around Wakuwaku Land hosts events such as the Tendo Summer Festival or the autumn chrysanthemum exhibition, allow for different parking, walking routes, and visit times.
  • If continuing into the hot spring district or to the shogi museum, check closing days, last admission, and footbath cleaning hours first.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

Available at Tento La France Factory. Single ¥400; double ¥450 (tax included, as listed on the official menu). Flavors change with the season.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Sweets

La France pear or seasonal fruit gelato

A quick way to taste Tendo, whether visiting with children or adults only.

Seasonal and popular flavors vary by day. If you cannot decide, a double lets you choose two different flavors.

Farm-direct sales

Cherries, grapes, Shine Muscat grapes, apples, and La France pears

What you buy changes with the season. Choosing one fruit in season makes souvenir shopping quicker.

Fruit-focused visits increase from June through autumn. An earlier stop tends to leave more choices.

Lunch

Ita soba, tori chuka, and imoni-style meals

For a Yamagata-style meal at the roadside station, including lunch before going into the hot spring district.

The kitchen's last order is 14:30 on weekdays and 15:00 on Sundays and public holidays. If it is crowded, leave room to switch to a light meal or takeaway.

Light meals

La France pear pies, baked goods, and soft serve

Easy to fit around the playground or footbath, including breaks outside normal mealtimes.

If eating outdoors, consider heat, wind, and insects, and plan a way back to the car.

Souvenirs

Fruit sweets, Yamagata sake, and shogi piece-themed goods

Alongside fruit, a shogi piece-themed item makes a distinctively Tendo souvenir.

Choose alcoholic drinks and chilled items with the length of your return trip in mind.
