Riho's Oga notes

See the fish, eat by the port, then decide where to go next on the Oga Peninsula.

Riho Wakamiya sees Oga as a first introduction to the peninsula's seafood. Browse the day's catch in the seafood section, enjoy Oga fish in a rice bowl or noodle dish at the restaurant, take a break at Oga Gelato, then head toward Oga Station, Funagawa Port or Mount Kanpu. Shopping and eating flow naturally into a port-town walk.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Oga is Oga City's first roadside station, centered on the city's combined tourism facility Namahage no Sato Ogaare. Fish arrive directly from fishers daily, with three-piece filleting available

According to the official site, fresh fish landed at Oga's ports arrives daily at the seafood section, and the adjoining processing room offers paid cleaning, including three-piece filleting. Many fish carry stickers identifying their fishing vessels, making the shopping itself a port-town experience. Rough seas can mean no arrivals.

02

Enjoy Oga ingredients in rice bowls and noodles at the port restaurant

Oga Restaurant on the East’s Finest Coastline serves dishes made with seasonal Oga ingredients and local products. Its official menu lists a three-color rice bowl with wild Oga sea bream, gibasa seaweed and red snow crab; shottsuru yakisoba, stir-fried noodles seasoned with fish sauce; and Oga salt ramen.

03

Oga Gelato and a 24-hour rest area make short stops easy

Oga Gelato sells eight gelato flavors that vary with the seasons, plus soft serve mainly in flavors unavailable as gelato. The rest area has a vending machine for frozen Oga foods and a microwave, both available 24 hours, so you can rest even outside shop hours.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A first stop in Oga

Choose lunch after seeing the fish

Start by seeing the day's catch in the market's seafood section, then choose a rice bowl or noodles made with Oga fish at the restaurant. Seeing seafood at both the counter and the table is a quick introduction to Oga's catch.

Park → market seafood section → restaurant → Oga Gelato → depart.

Restaurant hours change by season, and last orders are 30 minutes before each closing time. Market hours are generally 9:00–17:00.

A stop centered on eating and shopping

Ask for three-piece filleting when buying fresh fish to take home

The processing room offers paid fish cleaning, useful when you plan to take fresh fish home. The official site updates the day's arrivals around 9:00 each morning; checking before departure can save an unproductive trip.

Check arrivals → market → request cleaning at the processing room → keep fish chilled for the trip home.

Supplies are limited and fish cannot be reserved. Rough seas can also mean no arrivals.

A day for a short walk after parking

Walk between Oga Station and Funagawa Port

JR Oga Station is a three-minute walk away, and Funagawa Port is within a 200 m radius. According to the official site, the station building's observation deck overlooks Mount Kanpu and Funagawa Port, so you can pair market shopping with a port-town walk.

Roadside station → JR Oga Station → Funagawa Port area → return to the roadside station.

Check each facility's own guidance for access to the station building and port facilities.

A half-day to full-day tour of Oga

Use it as a starting point for an Oga Peninsula drive

About 25 minutes by car from Showa-Ogahanto IC and about 60 minutes from Akita Airport, this is a place to shop and eat before heading to Mount Kanpu or Oga's coast, or to buy souvenirs on the way back. With a 24-hour rest area and toilets, it also works for an early morning or evening stop.
