Highlights

Roadside Station Odate-Noshiro Airport is an unusual airport-based roadside station where visitors can use the passenger terminal's restaurant, cafe, shop, observation deck and parking. On the second floor, Restaurant Port One and ANA FESTA offer meals and shopping; Cafe Piccolo is on the first floor. Look for Hinai-jidori chicken, kiritanpo rice sticks, Inaniwa udon, Odate magewappa bentwood crafts, gelato and Hanazen's torimeshi chicken rice. On dates ending in 8, Akita dogs may greet arriving passengers. On other days, the observation deck and Akita dog photo spot still make a short break memorable. With children, locate the multipurpose and parent-child toilets and nursing room first; the kids' corner is inside the second-floor boarding waiting area. In fine weather, continue to Hokuo no Mori Park; in rain, try the Isedotai Jomon Museum or the Big Drum Museum.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A roadside station in an airport terminal

The passenger terminal is open for use from 7:45 to 19:00. Its restaurant, cafe, shop, observation deck, lobby, information desk and toilets are all in one building, making this a useful short stop with children or in bad weather.

02

Days when you can meet Akita dogs

On the 8th, 18th and 28th of each month, Akita dogs are scheduled to greet the morning arrival in the arrivals lobby at around 9:30–10:30. The greeting may be canceled depending on the dogs' condition that day, so check the day's information. It can be a memorable part of a visit to this station.

03

Northern Akita souvenirs and light food in one stop

ANA FESTA stocks souvenirs such as kiritanpo rice sticks, Inaniwa udon noodles, local sake and Odate magewappa bentwood crafts. The cafe offers gelato and panini, plus advance-order sales of Hanazen torimeshi chicken rice. You can shop for northern Akita specialties even if you are not flying.

04

Continue to Kitaakita's park, Jomon site and onsen

The Isedotai Jomon Museum and Jomon no Yu onsen, or hot spring, are a few minutes away by car; Hokuo no Mori Park and the Big Drum Museum are farther afield. Choose outdoor play on a fine day, indoor learning in rain, or a hot spring before heading home.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Families with children and visitors hoping for photos

A short stop timed for an Akita dog greeting

On a date ending in 8, visit the arrivals lobby around the morning flight, then make short stops at the cafe and shop. The greeting is brief, so leave meals and shopping until afterward.

Parking → arrivals lobby → Akita dog greeting → Piccolo → ANA FESTA.

Follow same-day information about the dogs' condition, flight schedule and event time. Follow staff instructions on whether visitors may interact with the dogs.

Days with uncertain weather

A rainy-day break on a Kitaakita drive

At this airport-based roadside station, you can eat, have sweets, shop, use the toilet and visit the nursing room inside the terminal even when it rains. Instead of forcing outdoor play, add an indoor stop at the Isedotai Jomon Museum or the Big Drum Museum.

Lunch at Port One → ANA FESTA → Isedotai Jomon Museum or Big Drum Museum.

Wind and weather affect the experience on the observation deck; stay mainly indoors if conditions are poor.

Outdoor play for ages 4–6 and elementary-school children

Play at Hokuo no Mori Park, then return

Use the airport toilets and have a snack before heading to Hokuo no Mori Park. Children can run around the Great Lawn and Wanpaku play area. On the way back, return to the airport for gelato or souvenirs.

Airport → Hokuo no Mori Park → Piccolo or ANA FESTA.

Areas available in the park change in winter; check official opening information.

Adults and elementary-school children or older

A half day of Jomon history and hot springs

Learn about the World Heritage Jomon site at the Isedotai Jomon Museum, then relax at Jomon no Yu onsen. Together they make a half-day cultural and hot-spring trip near the airport, before or after a flight or as a driving detour.

Roadside station → Isedotai Jomon Museum → Jomon no Yu → roadside station for souvenirs.

The archaeological site closes for outdoor visits in winter; plan around the season.

The start or end of a longer drive

Shop before driving toward Odate, Noshiro or Hirosaki

Before driving roughly 30 minutes to Odate City, 45 minutes to Noshiro City or 80 minutes to Hirosaki City, stop for toilets, drinks, souvenirs and a light meal. Free parking and rental car counters make the stop straightforward even if you are not flying.

Park → toilets → ANA FESTA → depart for northern Akita.

Winter road conditions and early darkness matter in northern Akita; allow extra time for late travel toward the mountains.

★★★★☆

The nursing room, baby changing bed and parent-child toilet make this suitable for a short break indoors in bad weather.

Avoid peak mealtimes and keep the visit short, using the lobby and cafe.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

The kids' corner, observation deck, Akita dog greeting and gelato offer ways to change the pace.

Crowds gather on Akita dog days; plan early where to carry a child or move with a stroller.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Combine planes, Akita dogs, the kids' corner and Hokuo no Mori Park for indoor and outdoor play.

Choose the park in fine weather, or switch to the Isedotai Jomon Museum or Big Drum Museum in rain.

Elementary-school children
★★★★★

Extend the theme from the observation deck to the World Heritage Jomon site museum, Big Drum Museum or Akita Dog Museum.

Make it a half-day themed trip beyond the airport.

Toilets

Check the floor map before heading to a meal or event.

Nursing and diaper changes

Locate them first to avoid extra trips between the arrivals lobby side and second floor.

Play

Watch the runway and aircraft, alternating outdoor views with indoor breaks. The kids' corner is inside the second-floor boarding waiting area.

With a dog

Follow signs on where pets may enter and on local etiquette.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Enter from parking lots 1 or 2

Use the front of the terminal and keep outdoor time short in poor weather. Parking is free, but the lots have different opening hours.

  2. 2
Use the lobby for toilets and a break

Locate the multipurpose toilet, information desk and coin lockers first. On Oozora Market days, watch for pedestrian traffic near the arrivals vestibule.

  3. 3
Choose food by time of day

Go to Port One for lunch or Piccolo for a light meal. Some restaurant items are available only at certain times.

  4. 4
    Shop at the end

If you buy chilled or fragile goods at ANA FESTA, consider your travel time home and the temperature inside the car.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Special event area in front of the passenger terminal

An outdoor area used for stalls at events such as Oozora Market. Some months bring processed seafood, vegetables, pickles and sweets.

Arrivals entrance vestibule

Used for stalls sheltered from the weather. Leave room for people to pass when crowded.

Arrivals lobby

The main area for Akita dog greetings. Follow staff instructions for photography.

Observation deck

A place to watch the runway and aircraft, with an airport atmosphere even on non-event days.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Keep Akita dog days focused and brief

The greeting happens on dates ending in 8, but only during a short window around the morning flight. Visiting the arrivals lobby first, taking photos and then going to the cafe can make the visit easier with children than eating first.

Have the cafe and shop as alternatives to a restaurant meal

Port One has lunch specials and fair menus, but its offerings change by time of day. If it is crowded or the timing does not work, Piccolo has light food and gelato, while ANA FESTA offers boxed meals and souvenirs.

Free parking has different opening hours

Parking lots 1 and 2 are open 7:30–19:45; lot 3 is open 24 hours. Follow airport guidance for overnight, early-morning or long-term parking, rather than assuming the rules for an ordinary roadside-station rest stop apply.

Movie

Preview the place on video

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The restaurant, cafe and shop have hours different from the terminal's; check each store's hours if food is the main reason for your visit.
  • Oozora Market and Akita dog greeting days draw people to the arrivals lobby and outdoor event area. With children, agree on a toilet stop and meeting place first.
  • Parking lots 1 and 2 are open 7:30–19:45, while lot 3 is open 24 hours. Follow airport guidance for long-term or nighttime parking. From October 13, 2026, the temporary parking lot will be unavailable during construction until further notice, and the bus and taxi pool will be used for ordinary cars; bus and taxi waiting areas will move to the front of the terminal.
  • The dog toilet is outside. Visitors with pets should check on-site signs for permitted areas and etiquette inside the terminal.
  • In winter, road conditions, wind and early darkness affect the airport area too. Keep the museum, onsen and terminal breaks close together.
  • Outdoor visits to the Isedotai Archaeological Site close in winter. Plan differently for a museum-only day and a day walking around the site.
