How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First thing when you arrive
See the port from the observation deck first

Admission is free, so enjoy the view while the weather is clear. In wind or snow, take it easy and enjoy the indoor facilities instead.

If you are buying souvenirs
Selion Garden in the morning

The selection of local vegetables and fruits changes depending on the time of day. Akita souvenirs include Inaniwa udon, Kiritanpo, Iburigakko, and sake.

For a small bite
Udon vending machine or Babahera soft serve

Choose the vending machine for its novelty, or Babahera soft serve for a taste of Akita. Either makes even a short visit memorable.

With children
Head to Rista and the children’s corner

The indoor green space and free play equipment let children move around even in rain, snow, or heat. A brief observation-deck visit is enough for children who dislike heights.

If you want to expand to a port town
Visit Tsuchizaki Minato History and Tradition Museum

Within walking distance, the museum covers the Tsuchizaki Port Hikiyama Festival, Kitamaebune trading ships, and the Tsuchizaki air raid. It adds the town’s history to the view from the roadside station.

From late afternoon
Aim for illumination and night view

The observation deck is open until 21:00. Some dining and shopping venues close earlier, so focus an evening visit on the view and a break.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Akita Port is Akita City’s only roadside station. Around Port Tower Selion’s free observation deck are the Selion Garden local-products shop, restaurants, the indoor green space Selion Rista, and an event plaza. It is easy to include on a drive along National Route 7, from Akita-kita Interchange, or from Akita Port Ferry Terminal. Even a brief stop offers views, shopping, the udon vending machine, and Babahera soft serve, an Akita specialty. With more time, continue to Tsuchizaki Minato History and Tradition Museum or the Akita Castle ruins to learn about the port town.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A free observation deck turns a break into a port panorama

The free observation deck 100 m above ground is the clearest reason to stop here. It looks over Akita Port, the Sea of Japan, and the city; in good weather you may also see toward the Oga Peninsula and Mount Chokai. Even a quick toilet stop can become a change of scene. Western light is lovely toward evening, while the illuminated tower and night view make a later visit worthwhile.

02

Find Akita souvenirs together in the local-products shop

Selion Garden stocks local vegetables, fruit, pickles, processed foods, sake, kiritanpo (grilled rice cylinders), Inaniwa udon, iburigakko (smoked pickled daikon), hatahata sandfish, butter mochi, and more. Direct-from-producer goods are easier to choose in the morning; later in the day, make the views and sweets the focus.

03

Food and sweets with a taste of the port and Akita

Choices range from daily specials at Selion Kitchen and the observation cafe 96 m above ground to seafood barbecue and build-your-own rice bowls at Tsuchizaki Minatoya. Outdoors there is Babahera soft serve, an Akita-style ice cream treat, while Selion Rista houses the udon and soba vending machine. Whether you want a full meal or just something sweet, this port-side station leaves a distinct memory.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Akita city, Oga area, short break before and after ferry

Turn your break on National Route 7 into a view of Akita Port

Park, go up to the observation deck, look over the port and Sea of Japan, then walk around the local-products shop. Even without time for a meal, the udon vending machine or Babahera soft serve makes this more than a routine stop.

Approximately 15 minutes from Akita-kita Interchange, approximately 18 minutes by car from Akita Station, and approximately 5 minutes walk from the ferry terminal.

The level of satisfaction with the view depends on the weather. On days when the weather is stormy, it's easier to move around if you focus on indoor green areas, local-products shops, and meals.

Shopping before returning home, driving from outside the prefecture, before boarding the ferry

Buy Akita souvenirs before heading home

Selion Garden is a good place to browse local vegetables and fruit, pickles, processed foods, sake, Inaniwa udon, kiritanpo, and iburigakko together. Leave a little time to shop as well as enjoying the view.

Observation deck → Selion Garden → choose sweets, noodles, or snacks to take in the car.

Farm-fresh products change depending on the season and time. If you're looking for vegetables and fruits, it's best to arrive early and focus on standard souvenirs in the evening.

A refreshing change of pace on rainy, snowy, hot days with preschoolers

Take children indoors when the weather turns

Selion Rista is a glass-walled indoor green space with a children’s corner. Coastal Akita can be windy, so children can play indoors for a while before you move on to food or shopping.

Parking area → toilets → Rista and children’s corner → local-products shop or a sweet treat.

Closing times are different for the observation deck, lista, and restaurants. After the evening, it is safer to start from the place you want to go first.

History buff, adult trip, short sightseeing on a rainy day

Spend half a day in the port town of Tsuchizaki

After seeing the port from Selion, walk to Tsuchizaki Minato History and Tradition Museum for the story of the Tsuchizaki Port Hikiyama Festival, Kitamaebune trading ships, and the Tsuchizaki air raid. Continue by car to the Akita Castle Site History Museum to trace northern Akita’s past from the port town back to ancient Dewa Province.

Michi-no-Eki Akita Port → Tsuchizaki Minato History and Tradition Museum → Akita Castle Site History Museum.

Exhibition facilities have closed days. Check Tuesday and New Year closures for Tsuchizaki Minato History and Tradition Museum and New Year closures for Akita Castle Site History Museum.

Port fireworks display, Aozora market, stamp rally, food truck opening day

Arrange parking and meals early on event days.

Selion hosts events around its plaza, Rista, Plaza, and the port. On a port fireworks day, the roadside station itself can become the destination. For a stay from daytime into evening, plan meals, toilets, and the return journey first.

Official event information → Parking location → Merchandise and food sales → Observation or event plaza.

Upcoming events are subject to change or cancellation. If the event date is close, it is realistic to check the official announcement and X/Instagram before heading there.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Under 1 year old
★★★☆☆

With 24-hour toilets and indoor facilities, short breaks are manageable. Take the observation deck and movement between buildings at a comfortable pace while carrying a baby or using a stroller.

2-3 years old
★★★★☆

Selion Rista and the children’s corner offer some play even in rain or snow. Keep the high observation-deck visit short if your child is uneasy there.

4-6 years old
★★★★☆

They are at an age where there are many easy-to-understand things to enjoy, such as observation decks, indoor green areas, udon vending machines, and soft serve ice cream. It's even easier to create goals on event days.

Elementary school student
★★★★☆

Combine the port view with Tsuchizaki Minato History and Tradition Museum and the Akita Castle ruins for both scenery and learning. Fireworks and railway-themed events can also appeal.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
There is a large parking lot, but be sure to arrive early on event days.

This is an easy station to stop at for regular breaks, but on days like port fireworks festivals and large-scale events, the station is often used as a destination. If you want to shorten the walking distance, it will be easier to decide where to park first.

  2. 2
The observation deck is free of charge, and you can be satisfied even if it is short and not overdoing it.

An elevator takes you to the observation deck, and even a brief look at the port can be satisfying. If someone in your group dislikes heights, make the local-products shop or cafe the focus.

  3. 3
Shopping from light to heavy items

If you're shopping for vegetables, alcohol, or refrigerated items, make the last trip after viewing the view or eating to reduce the amount you need to carry. When purchasing sake or processed products, you should also be careful about the temperature inside the car.

  4. 4
In winter, stay mostly indoors and watch the road and wind

Because this is on the coast, pay attention to wind and road conditions in winter or rough weather. A short route between Rista, the local-products shop, and the observation deck can still be rewarding.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

event plaza

It will be the center of events that can be enjoyed outdoors while walking, such as the port fireworks display, food trucks, food stall village, and stage events.

Selion Plaza

A facility with a multipurpose hall. It will be used as a venue for exhibitions, sales and community events.

Selion Rista

The indoor green space, udon and soba vending machine, and children’s play area make a visit less dependent on the weather.

Port tower light up

The light-up schedule will be officially updated. From evening onwards, it becomes a destination for panoramic views and night views.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The observation deck is free, so many people go up there even for a short time.

Visitor information and reported experiences point to Selion as a roadside station where people often head for the view first, rather than shopping first. Clear days, sunsets, and night views each feel different; if the weather is good, start upstairs.

Udon vending machines create more memories than meals

The udon and soba vending machine inside Selion Rista draws fans from far away. Trying an old-style vending machine is part of the appeal, and gives children or first-time visitors something to talk about.

Shop produce in the morning; standard souvenirs also work later

Selion Garden’s official guidance recommends morning shopping for a better selection of vegetables and fruit. For a final stop later in the day, look for Akita staples such as Inaniwa udon, iburigakko, kiritanpo, and sake.

On the day of the event, the roadside station will be your destination.

Selion is a station where many events are held, such as the Port Fireworks Festival, Aozora Market, stamp rallies, and light ups. There are days when the route is different from the usual rest route, so if you're planning an event, you'll want to decide on parking, meals, and your return trip in advance.

Tsuchizaki Minato History and Tradition Museum gives context to the port

Within walking distance, Tsuchizaki Minato History and Tradition Museum connects the harbor seen from Selion with the Tsuchizaki Port Hikiyama Festival, Kitamaebune trading ships, and memories of the Tsuchizaki air raid. It is a way to take home more than food and shopping.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The observation deck is free from 9:00-21:00. On days when you want to see the sunset and night views, be aware that the local-products shops and restaurants close first.
  • Selion Garden is open from 9:00-18:00, until 17:00 from December to February and on the last day of the month. It is easier to choose farm-fresh products in the morning.
  • Selion Rista is open 9:00–18:00, closing at 17:00 from November through March. Its indoor green space, udon vending machine, and children’s play area are useful in bad weather.
  • Approximately 18 minutes by car from Akita Station, approximately 15 minutes by car from Akita-kita Interchange, and approximately 5 minutes walk from the ferry terminal. Easy to incorporate between Akita city and Oga area.
  • On this coast, winter, strong winds, and rough weather affect visibility and outdoor movement. Check road conditions and official notices.
  • On event days, the station tends to be more crowded than regular roadside stations. For port fireworks festivals, decide on parking, meals, and your return trip early.
Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

First, decide on a souvenir from Akita.

Inaniwa udon / kiritanpo / iburigakko / hatahata sandfish / sake

A convenient way to buy several Akita classics before leaving the prefecture or boarding a ferry. Choose gifts for fellow travelers and snacks to enjoy with sake at home in one place.

When choosing alcoholic beverages and refrigerated items, consider the transportation time. Seasonal products change depending on availability.

Shop direct from producers

Local vegetables / fruits / wild vegetables / mushrooms / root vegetables

The shopping experience at Selion Garden changes with the seasons, such as wild vegetables in spring, tomatoes and eggplants in summer, mushrooms and chestnuts in autumn, and root vegetables in winter.

Selection depends on the time of day. Morning is best if vegetables and fruit are your main goal.

Eat something quickly

Udon/Soba vending machine / Babahera soft serve / Selion Cafe

Good options when you do not want a full restaurant meal: the vending machine for novelty, Babahera soft serve for sweets, or the observation cafe for a view.

The vending machine runs 10:00–17:00; Babahera offerings depend on weather and season, so have another option in mind.

Sit down for a full meal

Selion Kitchen / Akita Port Tsuchizaki Minatoya / seafood barbecue / build-your-own rice bowl

If you want to enjoy seafood typical of a port station, try Tsuchizaki Minatoya, and if you want daily set meals or rice bowls, try Selion Kitchen. It can be used as a dining destination as well as viewing and shopping.

Restaurants are subject to irregular holidays and temporary changes. Prioritize official restaurant business status.

Let the scenery take center stage at night

Observation deck / illumination / 24-hour toilets

The observation deck is open until 21:00, and the illuminated tower gives the port a nighttime character. Even after shopping and dining close, you can take a break and see the night view.

At night, there are fewer options for food, drink, and merchandise. If you're looking for food, it's best to stop by between noon and evening.
