On a fine day, visit the flower beds first. The scene changes from tulips in spring to sunflowers and marigolds in summer.

For a longer outing
Hot springs, sea, brewing and cherry blossoms

Choose Tenno Greenland, Kodama Brewing, Nihonkoku Kaen or Detohama Coast according to the season and weather for a half-day outing.

Nono's order of stops

Toilets, flower beds, food, shopping: get the family moving together before the next leg.

Nono Tsukioka sees this station as a place to reset the rhythm of a family drive as well as a place for flowers. With young children, use the toilets and nursing area first; choose the beds on fine days, the greenhouses in rain and Hana no Daichi at lunchtime. Finish by choosing flower seedlings or tsukudani to take a little of Katagami home even after a short break.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Showa, also known as Blume Messe Akita, is a roadside station devoted to flowers. Spring tulips, summer sunflowers and marigolds, three display greenhouses, Agri Plaza Showa with flower seedlings and freshly harvested vegetables, and Hana no Daichi restaurant overlooking the flowers all share one site. Close to the Showa Oga Peninsula interchange, it is a place to use the toilets, eat and stroll among the flowers before heading toward Oga. With more time, extend the trip to Tenno Greenland, Kodama Brewing or Nihonkoku Kaen for more of the Katagami area.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Make the flower beds and greenhouses the focus of your break

Blume Messe Akita brings together Agri Plaza Showa, Hana no Daichi Restaurant, display greenhouses, a lawn and flower-bed plaza, and a ground golf course. Look for around 60,000 tulip bulbs in spring, sunflowers and marigolds in summer, and greenhouse plants and flower displays in autumn and winter. Ground golf is a Japanese game played by striking a ball toward a goal with a club.

02

Shop for flower seedlings, morning-picked vegetables and Katagami tsukudani

Agri Plaza Showa sells flowers befitting the Showa district, known as a flower town, along with locally grown vegetables, pears, shiitake mushrooms and tsukudani made with shirauo (Japanese icefish), pond smelt and gobies from Lake Hachirogata. Tsukudani is seafood simmered in a sweet-savory sauce. A product exchange corner also stocks goods from roadside stations outside Akita Prefecture.

03

A meal overlooking flowers works on rainy days too

Hana no Daichi Restaurant is generally open 11:00–18:00, with last orders at 17:00. Choose from monthly lunch specials, a fried shrimp set meal, pizza and takeout. If rain keeps you off the flower beds, combine a meal with the greenhouses.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 30–45-minute driving break

Add a flower-bed stroll to a National Route 7 break

Use the toilets on arrival, then head to the lawn and flower-bed plaza if the weather is fine. Circle the beds and look at flower seedlings and vegetables at Agri Plaza Showa to get a feel for the station even on a short stop.

Parking → toilets → lawn and flower-bed plaza → Agri Plaza Showa → departure

The beds look different during replanting and in different weather. When outdoor flowers are sparse, make the greenhouses the focus.

Families traveling toward Oga from the Akita City side

Have lunch and shop before heading toward Oga

Have lunch at Hana no Daichi Restaurant, then buy flower seedlings, tsukudani and vegetables before leaving. Meals, toilets and shopping in one place can help the family settle into the drive before entering the Oga Peninsula.

Showa Oga Peninsula interchange → Michi-no-Eki Showa → National Route 101 toward Oga

The restaurant generally opens at 11:00. Around lunchtime, leave room to visit the greenhouses or shop first if you need to wait to eat.

Families with children on rainy, very hot or cold days

Spend a rainy day among greenhouses, food and farm produce

Skip the outdoor flower beds and look at plants in the display greenhouses, eat at the restaurant and browse flowers and vegetables at Agri Plaza Showa. Diaper-changing facilities, a nursing area and hot water for baby formula are also listed, making it useful for a short break with infants.

Parking → toilets and nursing area → display greenhouses → restaurant → Agri Plaza Showa

Parts of the greenhouses may close for replanting or renovation. Check aisle widths in the shop before moving through it with a stroller.

A spring or autumn half-day detour

Extend the flower stop into a half-day Katagami drive

After the station's flower beds and greenhouses, head to Nihonkoku Kaen for cherry blossoms in spring, Detohama for a seaside stroll in summer, or Kodama Brewing or Tenno Greenland at other times. Add hot springs, brewing, the sea or cherry blossoms to the flower visit to see more of the Katagami area.

Michi-no-Eki Showa → Kodama Brewing or Nihonkoku Kaen → Tenno Greenland or Detohama Coast

Detohama Beach will not operate as a designated swimming beach in fiscal 2026. Treat it as a coastal walk; anyone who swims must make their own safety judgment and take responsibility.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★★☆

A nursing area, diaper-changing facilities and hot water for baby formula make a short break easier.

Keep the flower-bed walk short; toilets, nursing, greenhouses and shopping can be a practical order.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

The flower beds and greenhouses are easy to look around, but keep children close in the shop.

There are many seedlings and products, so decide where to walk and keep each part short. For a day with more active play, move on to Tenno Greenland.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Flower beds, greenhouses, pizza and farm produce offer a varied visit.

Visit the outdoor beds first in fine weather or the greenhouses first in rain. A short walk before eating can make a restaurant wait easier.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Seasonal flowers, tropical greenhouse plants and Katagami foods are easy conversation starters.

If flowers alone are not enough, combine the visit with a tour at Kodama Brewing or Tenno Greenland's views and hot springs.

Facilities for infants

Akita Prefecture's childcare support information lists diaper changing, a nursing area and hot water for baby formula.

Rainy days

Keep the visit short and centered on the display greenhouses, a meal and shopping at Agri Plaza Showa rather than outdoor play.

Outdoor play

This station does not center on large playground equipment. For a longer play session, make Tenno Greenland a separate destination.

Visitors with dogs

A dog training school is being held in fiscal 2026. For ordinary visits, check the on-site rules for indoor areas and flower beds.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Lawn and flower-bed plaza

A flower and green space of about 20,000 square meters. Spring tulips and summer marigolds and sunflowers change the station's character with the blooming season.

Display Greenhouses A, B and C

The themes are mixed plantings, flowers grown in Akita Prefecture and tropical plants. The greenhouses make winter and rainy-day visits worthwhile.

Dog training school

Ten sessions are planned in fiscal 2026, mainly on the second Sunday of each month from June through March 2027. Registration has ended, but parking and the plaza may feel different on event days.

Ground golf course

An outdoor facility open from snowmelt until snowfall. Tournaments and monthly sessions make it suitable for seniors and adults seeking exercise.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Plan for the seasonal ups and downs of a flower-centered stop

Official and tourism association information features spring tulips, summer sunflowers and salvia, autumn cosmos, and winter greenhouse displays. Outdoor beds may have less to see during replanting, when the greenhouses and restaurant can become the focus.

Have a backup plan for monthly lunches and pizza

The official restaurant page updates July fish and meat lunches, the icefish rice bowl and pond smelt set, seasonal pizzas and takeout. If the dining room is busy, visit the greenhouses or shops first rather than waiting only for a table.

Look separately for flower seedlings, vegetables and tsukudani

Agri Plaza Showa sells not only flower seedlings but also morning-picked vegetables, Katagami specialties and tsukudani made with Lake Hachirogata icefish, pond smelt and gobies. Review trends also emphasize the seedlings and greenhouses; browsing flowers as well as food brings out the station's character.

With children, the order of stops matters more than playground equipment

Childcare support information lists diaper changing, a nursing area and hot water for baby formula. The station's main activities are flower-bed walks and greenhouse visits rather than large playground equipment. Walk a little before eating, then move to Tenno Greenland if the children want more activity.

Spring and winter give clear reasons to visit

Around 60,000 tulip bulbs in spring and greenhouse displays or a poinsettia tower in winter give the flower station seasonal appeal. Tourism association updates have also listed a world orchid fair and poinsettia displays; check official and tourism association notices shortly before visiting for seasonal events.

Dog events and ground golf can change the feel of a visit

Although registration for the fiscal 2026 dog training school has closed, monthly sessions continue. The ground golf course also posts tournament dates, so the plaza and parking area may feel different on those days.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

The main lunch choice

Hana no Daichi Restaurant's monthly lunch specials

Choose the fish or meat lunch during the 11:00–15:00 lunch period. A seat overlooking the flowers makes the station's character especially clear.

Monthly dishes and prices change. Check the restaurant's official monthly updates.

Easy to share with family

Pizza, doria, curry and fried shrimp set meal

These are possible dishes to share with children. Pizza is also available for takeout, so eating in the car or at your accommodation is an option if the dining room is difficult for the family.

A taste of Katagami

Whitebait rice bowl, pond smelt set and tsukudani

Dishes and tsukudani made with fish from the Lake Hachirogata area add a local food dimension to this flower station. Tsukudani is fish simmered in a sweet-savory sauce.

Take home

Flower seedlings, morning-picked vegetables, pears and shiitake

At Agri Plaza Showa, flower seedlings are as much a shopping focus as food. In summer, consider the time until you get home when buying flowers and vegetables.

A detour discovery

Product exchange corner with goods from roadside stations outside Akita

Browse roadside station goods from other regions as well as Akita souvenirs. Choosing a small unusual item with children can be part of the visit.
