Nono's stopover note

Pear curry or miso soft serve? Pick a flavor, then head out to the lawn.

Nono Hozumi sees this as a place to choose a taste of Katagami before deciding how to spend the rest of your stop. Find local vegetables at the farm market, lunch at Nappa House and something sweet at Kurakake. Add a bath, tower view or coastal side trip, and family members can follow different interests without derailing the day.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Tenno is a large, multiuse roadside station within Tenno Greenland in Katagami City. Shop for local vegetables and processed foods at Tenno Green Market; eat Hachimantai pork grilled with Saikyo miso or vegetable ankake ramen at Nappa House; then try soft serve at Nappa Stand or Dream Shop Kurakake. The free observation deck at Tenno Sky Tower, lawns, play areas and Kurara no Yu baths are all on the same grounds. It works for a quick shopping stop, time outdoors with children, or a bath at the end of a drive toward Oga or Akita City. A Detohama beach visit in summer, flower markets and bath events in autumn or winter give each season a different reason to stop. Saikyo miso is a sweet, pale Kyoto-style miso; ankake is a thickened savory sauce.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Switch between food, shopping and baths on one site

Tenno Green Market, Nappa House, Nappa Stand, Hachibei Soba, Dream Shop Kurakake and Kurara no Yu are all within Tenno Greenland. You can change your plans with the crowds or weather instead of making this a stop for only a meal, shopping or a bath.

02

Katagami's flavors: pears, miso and local vegetables

Nappa Stand describes its curry as using Tenno pears, a Katagami specialty, and vegetables. Dream Shop Kurakake offers Maromiso soft serve made with miso from local Miura Shoyu. Together with the market's vegetables, these give you tastes of Katagami to take home alongside Akita souvenirs.

03

The tower and lawns give children and adults room to take different breaks

Tenno Sky Tower is a landmark with views toward the Sea of Japan, Lake Hachiro, the Oga Peninsula and Mount Chokai. Below it are a picnic lawn, play area and historical square, with space for a short walk after eating. Heading outside first can be an easy change of pace when the facilities are busy.

04

Sea in summer, baths in winter: use the site differently by season

Katagami City says Detohama Beach has no lifeguards in 2026; the beach itself is not operating as a designated swimming area. The beach huts were scheduled to operate through August 30, and shoreline walks remain an option. In colder weather, check Kurara no Yu's reduced hours, special baths and multi-visit ticket offers when planning a bathing stop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 30–45 minute shopping break

A short stop for farm produce and sweets

After parking, use the restroom, browse vegetables and processed foods at Tenno Green Market, then try pumpkin or Maromiso soft serve at Dream Shop Kurakake. You can enjoy a distinctly Katagami shopping and sweets stop without a sit-down meal.

Parking → restroom → Green Market → Kurakake → departure

Farm market and shop hours are generally 9:00–17:00. Consider the heat and your journey home when buying fresh food.

A midday break for preschool and elementary-age children

Make a family break of lunch, lawns and the tower

Have lunch at Nappa House, then let the children get some fresh air on the play area or lawns. Adults can split up to visit Sky Tower or the farm market, so everyone need not pursue the same activity throughout the stop.

Lunch → play area → Sky Tower → farm market

Shade and wind affect outdoor comfort. Keep outdoor time brief in summer; in winter, favor the baths or an indoor break.

An evening break after visiting Oga or Akita City

End the drive with a bath

On the way back from the Oga Peninsula or Akita City, wash off the day's sweat at Kurara no Yu before a light bite. Its saunas, rest area and children's space also make it useful after the beach or play area.

Nearby sightseeing → Kurara no Yu → light meal or farm market → home

As of July 2026, reduced hours were in effect and the facility was using heated tap water because the hot-spring source had stopped. Check the latest notices if bathing is a main purpose of your trip.

A summer shoreline walk and sunset

Continue to the Detohama shore

After lunch and shopping at the roadside station, drive to Detohama for views over the Sea of Japan toward the Oga Peninsula. Katagami City says the beach is not operating as a designated swimming area in 2026 and has no lifeguards. A shore walk or a visit to a beach hut is a more practical plan than swimming.

Roadside station → Detohama Beach → head home in the evening

Beach conditions, wind, waves and supervision change from year to year. With children, do not plan around swimming.

A half-day drive for shoppers

Add flowers and another farm market

After trying pear curry or miso soft serve and browsing vegetables at Tenno, continue to Blue Messe Akita. Flowers and farm produce from Katagami's Showa district, plus its display greenhouse, make for another food-and-shopping stop.

Michi-no-Eki Tenno → Blue Messe Akita → Showa-Oga Peninsula Interchange

Blue Messe is at a separate roadside station. Allow for travel time and the volume of shopping, including cooler space and room in the car.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Up to age 1
★★★☆☆

Suitable for short stops and moving indoors before or after a bath.

The grounds are large, so it is easier not to pack shopping, meals and bathing into one visit. On hot days, watch the car temperature and shade; center the stop on Green Market and indoor breaks.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

The lawns and play area offer a change of mood while waiting for food.

There is room to run outside, but watch for vehicles moving through the grounds, water and merchandise in the shops. Soft serve and fries offer quick food options.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The tower, open areas and soft serve make easy goals for a visit.

On a clear day, start with Sky Tower so the stop is more than shopping. On rainy or very windy days, choose the baths and a meal.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

The historical square, folklore hall and Detohama can fill a day.

Combine the historical square, styled after an ancient settlement, the folklore hall and a summer shore walk for a taste of local history as well as food.

Spaces used for events

October 11, 2026 Kurara no Yu 28th anniversary

A garapon lottery is announced to mark the 28th anniversary of Kurara no Yu. Details are to be posted later on Instagram and on notices inside the bath facility.

October 13, 2026 Kurara no Yu closed

Kurara no Yu's October closing day is announced as Tuesday the 13th. This applies to the bath, separately from the Green Market and restaurants, so check the date if bathing is the purpose of your visit.

October 31, 2026 Halloween Event 2026

Planned as the first Halloween event held at Michi-no-Eki Tenno. A costume contest starts at 13:00 (entries accepted October 1–24 and closing once capacity is reached), alongside Halloween makeup sessions, food trucks and a market, and a walk-around puzzle game. Visitors who arrive in costume are offered a half-price Kurara no Yu bath ticket. Details may change, and the event may be canceled in bad weather.

Reduced hours at Kurara no Yu

The facility announced 10:00–20:00 hours and final bath admission at 19:30 from April 1, 2026, until further notice. If the bath is your last stop, work backward from the closing time.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Choose food first to make the large site easier to navigate

The official site brings together play, dining, shopping, bathing and sports facilities. On a first visit, choose one main goal—farm produce, lunch, sweets or a bath—instead of trying to see everything; that makes the large grounds easier to navigate.

Choose Nappa House for lunch, or the stand or soba for a lighter stop

Nappa House is open 11:00–15:00, with a Hachimantai pork Saikyo-miso grilled rice bowl and limited-quantity weekday Wasai bento among its main dishes. For a quicker stop, there are Nappa Stand, Hachibei Soba and Kurakake's light meals and sweets.

The baths are convenient; check 2026 operating changes

Kurara no Yu is described as one of Akita Prefecture's largest public bathing facilities, with Japanese- and Western-style baths and low- and high-temperature saunas. As of July 2026, it was operating reduced hours and using heated tap water because its hot-spring source had stopped. Check the latest notices if bathing is a main goal.

Event days bring more to buy and more people

The July 20, 2026 tasting sale, August 10–13 Obon flower market and August 23 Tenno Greenland Festival were among the food and farm-market events listed. On event days, leave room to switch between the market, sweets and baths rather than depending on a single dining plan.

Check Detohama's 2026 beach status

Katagami City says that because of beach erosion and other effects, Detohama did not open as a designated swimming beach in 2026 and had no lifeguards. For a summer side trip near the roadside station, plan around beach huts, views and sunset walks.

The site's size and mix of facilities can delight or complicate a visit

Travel-site and social-media comments often welcome having the tower, baths, park, farm market and dining together; without a goal, however, a stop can run long. For a short break, focus on the market and sweets; for half a day, add the baths and open areas.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Nappa House is generally open 11:00–15:00, with last order at 14:30. Arrive early if lunch is the main reason for your stop.
  • Tenno Green Market and Dream Shop Kurakake are generally open 9:00–17:00.
  • From April 1, 2026, until further notice, Kurara no Yu announced reduced hours of 10:00–20:00, with final bath admission at 19:30.
  • Because the hot-spring source has stopped, Kurara no Yu announced that it would use heated tap water until further notice. Check updates if you are seeking a hot-spring bath.
  • Nappa Stand suspends soft-serve sales in winter; Kurakake's soft serve is another option if sweets are your goal.
  • Weather, wind and construction notices can affect the tower and open areas. On a clear day, see the view first.
  • Events can make Green Market and parking busier, so keep the order of meals and shopping flexible.
  • For a Detohama side trip, note that the beach did not open as a designated swimming area in 2026 and had no lifeguards; plan mainly for a shore walk.
