Nono's Ogachi notes

Choose what to eat and Ogachi becomes much more fun.

Nono Sakakibara approaches Michi-no-Eki Ogachi through the question of what southern Akita foods to take home. Eat Inaniwa udon at Futatsumori; choose local sake and iburigakko at the souvenir hall; look for wild vegetables or fruit at Nana Komachi; and stop for gelato at Bosco. The Ono no Komachi connection stays with you in your shopping bag and on a walk to Komachido after lunch.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Ogachi is a roadside station on National Route 13 in Ono, Yuzawa City, at the southern edge of Akita Prefecture. Its building resembles the ichimegasa travel hat associated with the poet Ono no Komachi. The complex includes a souvenir hall, Restaurant Futatsumori, the Nana Komachi farmers' market, Komachi Cafe Bosco and a rest building. Inaniwa udon, Yuzawa sake, iburigakko (smoked pickled daikon), Ogachi-grown Akitakomachi rice, seasonal wild vegetables and fruit, and gelato give visitors plenty to eat and buy. Near Ogachi Komachi Interchange, it works for a quick toilet stop, lunch and market shopping, or a half-day trip extending to Komachido and Oyasu Gorge. Guide Nono Sakakibara describes it as a place to discover southern Akita flavors and the Komachi legend in one stop on Route 13.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Southern Akita souvenirs in one place

The souvenir hall carries a broad range of Inaniwa udon, noted Yuzawa sake, iburigakko (smoked pickled daikon), Ogachi-grown Akitakomachi rice and Ono no Komachi goods. It is a convenient place to pick up missed purchases when driving across the prefectural border.

02

Lunch on Inaniwa udon and local ingredients at Futatsumori

From the second-floor seating at Restaurant Futatsumori, you can see Mount Higashi-Chokai. Choose Akita dishes such as Inaniwa udon, Hinai-jidori chicken and egg rice bowl, or a hand-prepared zenmai fern rice bowl. It is worth stopping for a meal.

03

Nana Komachi changes with the seasons

Farmers from the Ogachi area supply the market with vegetables and fruit: wild vegetables in spring, mushrooms and orchard fruit in autumn, and pickles and vegetables for hot pots in winter. Arriving early gives you a better selection.

04

Explore Ono no Komachi's home area on foot

Around the station are Komachi-no-Sato Park, Komachido and historic places linked to Komachi. A short walk beyond the shops connects you with the story behind the area's name.

These facilities are helpful on long drives, trips with children, and journeys to and from hot springs or the gorge that do not include an overnight stay.

Reviews often remember the souvenir selection and snacks such as grilled miso-tanpo

Even an unplanned toilet stop can turn into a visit to the shop or food stall. You can enjoy the station outside the main meal times.

Near Ogachi Komachi Interchange, it is a useful stop before heading into the mountains

Near the connection between Route 13 and the Yuzawa-Yokote Road, the station is convenient for supplies before Oyasu Gorge, Akinomiya Onsen area or Yamagata.
