With horse meat dishes, ramen, soba, curry, and soft serve, it works for lunch or a sweet break.

Think of this as a place to reset during a drive on National Route 285, rather than a stop for large play structures.

Keep the visit short and indoors with a meal, sweets, shopping, or a photo exhibition instead of outdoor play.

If you head farther afield

Nono's detour notes

This station is easier to use when you plan the toilets, meal, shopping, and rainy-day option before looking for a play area.

Nono Nanjo looks at this station in the order that works for families: start with the toilets, choose lunch or a sweet in the Akita Cedar Hall, and pick out ground cherries, kohaze berries, and wild mountain vegetables at the product center. Extend the outing to Yamafuji Onsen, the natural Akita cedar forest, or an event day for outdoor activities. Placed before a bigger destination, the stop leaves room to enjoy Kamikoani's flavors and quiet setting.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Kamikoani is a small stop on National Route 285 between the Akita City area and Kitaakita and Odate. Here you can find Kamikoani's edible ground cherries, kohaze berries, wild mountain vegetables, and Akita cedar goods. There are no elaborate play structures or large complex: choose mountain produce at the product center, eat horse meat dishes, soba with local vegetables, or ground cherry soft serve in the Akita Cedar Hall, and settle into the information rest room or wooden building on a rainy day. With more time, continue to Yamafuji Onsen, a natural Akita cedar forest, the Mantobi lights at the spring equinox, or an autumn or winter photo exhibition for a quiet detour through Kamikoani.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Take home the flavors of Kamikoani during a short break

The product center focuses on edible ground cherries, kohaze berries, egoma (perilla) seeds, wild mountain vegetables, local vegetables, and processed foods. The appeal is a compact shop where you can ask staff about seasonal finds. If an unfamiliar mountain vegetable catches your eye, there is time to ask how to cook it.

02

Choose a dining outlet in the Akita Cedar Hall to suit your schedule

The official dining page lists Hozukitei, Yorimichi, and Restaurant Nonohana inside the airy building made with Akita cedar. Choices range from horse meat ramen, horse meat set meals, and tempura soba served with a separate dipping broth to curry and kohaze sundaes. Plan around whether you want lunch or just a sweet stop.

03

Explore the village as a quiet destination

Kamikoani Village is largely forested and is introduced as the home of natural Akita cedar and the Koanichidori orchid. You can stop at the roadside station alone, or finish at Yamafuji Onsen, see the forest at Kamiouchizawa Nature Observation and Education Forest, or time a visit for the Mantobi lights at the spring equinox or a photo exhibition. A break can become an introduction to the village.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Traveling between the Akita City and Kitaakita areas

A 30-minute food and shopping stop on National Route 285

After parking, use the toilets first, then browse ground cherries, kohaze berries, and wild mountain vegetables at the product center. Around lunchtime, try horse meat ramen or soba in the Akita Cedar Hall. If you skip a meal, soft serve or a sundae still offers a quick taste of Kamikoani.

National Route 285 → parking → toilets → product center → Akita Cedar Hall → departure.

Hours and closing days differ by dining outlet. If lunch is your aim, arrive early: some outlets stop serving around 14:00.

A driving break with preschool or elementary-school children

With children, handle food and toilets first

This is not a place for long play sessions. Start with the toilets, then a meal or sweet, and finish with a short visit to the product center. Ground cherry soft serve or a kohaze sundae may help children reset if they cannot wait for a meal.

Toilets → Akita Cedar Hall → product center → drinks in the car.

In rain or snow, keep outdoor walking brief. Check how busy the dining outlets are before deciding to stay longer, so your schedule remains manageable.

Adults, three-generation groups, or a day when you want relief from a long drive

A half-day in the hills ending at Yamafuji Onsen

After lunch and shopping at the roadside station, drive to Yamafuji Onsen for a quiet hot-spring stop in Kamikoani. It is listed as open 10:00–19:00 and closed Wednesdays and over New Year, so work backward from closing time if you plan an evening visit.

Michi-no-Eki Kamikoani → Yamafuji Onsen → return to National Route 285.

Yamafuji Onsen lies a little farther into the hills. In winter, check snow and road conditions and be ready to skip the detour.

A clear morning for families or adults who enjoy forest walks

A day among natural Akita cedars

Pick up drinks and snacks at the station before heading to Kamiouchizawa Nature Observation and Education Forest. The natural Akita cedars, more than 250 years old, and the burl-bearing Kobusugi cedar add a forest experience to your food and shopping stop. Some paths are listed as closed, so plan a short walk only where access is permitted.

Product center → Kamiouchizawa Nature Observation and Education Forest → return to the station or hot spring.

Weather, insects, bears, and footing affect a forest walk. With children, plan a short spell in the woods instead of a long hike.

A visit timed for Mantobi, a photo exhibition, or village events

Make the station area your destination on event days

At the spring-equinox Mantobi event, stalls and children's activities gather around the station. A photo exhibition is also advertised for the information rest room in autumn and winter. The station is usually quiet, but parking and the time needed for a visit change on event days.

Official event information → parking around the station → product center and event → meal or hot spring.

Event arrangements change after the advertised dates. Check village, roadside-station, and tourism-association announcements just before visiting.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Use this station for toilets and a short break rather than expecting dedicated nursing or diaper-changing facilities.

A brief visit to the product center and dining area is easier while carrying your child.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

This is not a place for long play sessions, but soft serve or a sundae can help change the pace.

Use the toilets first, decide on food next, and keep the parents' shopping brief.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Meals and sweets are appealing, with more to enjoy when a photo exhibition or children's fair is held on an event day.

Events such as Mantobi can bring crowds; decide where to park and when to leave early on.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Connecting edible ground cherries, kohaze berries, Akita cedar, and the natural cedar forest makes this a stop for learning about the area.

If you continue to Kamiouchizawa Nature Observation and Education Forest, check accessible paths and closure notices and keep the walk short.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

A valuable rest stop on National Route 285

Travel reviews and trip accounts often value the chance to combine toilets, food, and shopping on a stretch with few large rest facilities, even though this station is compact. Its strength shows when you use it to organize your journey rather than stay a long time.

Eat early in the day for peace of mind

The official dining information indicates that Hozukitei and Restaurant Nonohana stop serving meals around 14:00. If you are coming for horse meat dishes or soba with local vegetables, choose your meal before shopping.

With children, short activities work better than a long play stop

Family outing listings cover a broad age range, while the station itself centers on eating, shopping, and resting. A practical family visit combines sweets, toilets, and quick shopping, with a move to the hot spring or forest if wanted.

On rainy days, the photo exhibition and wooden building help

Even without outdoor play, a visit can stay within the Akita Cedar Hall, product center, and information rest room. While a photo exhibition is on, combine shopping with the display for a glimpse of the village's seasons during a short rainy-day break.

At the spring equinox, the station changes character

On Mantobi day, stalls and children's activities gather near the station, and the evening becomes a tour of lights in the settlements. Crowds and visit lengths differ from an ordinary quiet stop, so treat the station as the destination that day.

Road conditions take priority for forest and campsite visits

Some paths in Kamiouchizawa Nature Observation and Education Forest are closed, and Hagigata Campground is listed as closed because of road conditions. Before heading into nature, check official access and operating notices and keep your options short.

For horse meat dishes, check Hozukitei or Yorimichi first. Restaurant Nonohana is also an option if your family wants soba or curry.
