Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Nori, oysters, and Choju miso

The second-floor dining area is the place for lunch. Choose nori seaweed ramen, oysters, or a miso-cutlet style dish according to your appetite.

If you only want something sweet
Take a short break with zunda and coffee

First-floor light meals offer a quick taste of Higashimatsushima: a zunda sweet made from mashed edamame and a drink between drives.

Rice, vegetables, nori, and processed seafood

Shopping here goes beyond tourist souvenirs to foods for your own table. If you have something specific in mind, visit early.

If you are using the expressway
Mind the separate PA-side and local-road entrances

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Higashimatsushima is a new gateway to the city, beside Yamoto Parking Area on the inbound Sanriku Expressway and also accessible from local roads. Its second-floor observation deck, Blue Impulse VR experience, and permanent display of a retired aircraft convey the city's aviation identity. For food, look for nori seaweed ramen, oysters, dishes made with Choju miso, and zunda sweets made from mashed edamame. The shop sells Higashimatsushima rice, vegetables, nori, and processed seafood. Whether you hope to watch a training flight or head toward Oku-Matsushima, it is a good place to decide what to eat and take home.

Food first

Look up, then eat and shop

Blue Impulse catches the eye, but the order of a weekend food stop matters too. For lunch, make the second-floor restaurant your main stop. For a quick visit, choose zunda or coffee; on the way home, shop for nori and processed seafood. Bring the memory of the sky back to your table.

Meals

Start with dishes that show the local sea and flavors: nori ramen, oysters, and Choju miso.

Sweets

Zunda soft serve and light snacks are welcome breaks while waiting for a flight or making a short stop.

Shopping

Browse rice, vegetables, nori, and processed seafood for a dinner ingredient as well as a souvenir.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The sky draws your eyes before you eat

The sky is the first attraction here. With an observation deck, VR experience, and a retired Blue Impulse aircraft on display, the roadside station is a destination for aviation enthusiasts. On days with training flights there may be aircraft overhead; even without one, the exhibits show how closely Higashimatsushima is linked to Matsushima Air Base.

02

Taste Higashimatsushima through nori, oysters, and zunda

Choose nori ramen, oysters, or a dish with Choju miso upstairs; then stop downstairs for zunda sweets made from mashed edamame or coffee. Before leaving, browse rice, vegetables, nori, and processed seafood in the shop. Aviation makes a strong first impression, but the food gives you another reason to return.

03

Sanriku Expressway convenience meets a gateway to Oku-Matsushima

The station can be reached directly from inbound Yamoto PA; from the local-road side, you can drive on to Oku-Matsushima or Blue Impulse viewing spots. Cars cannot drive through from the PA side to the local-road side. Knowing this makes the station useful for either a short break or a half-day drive.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Aviation enthusiasts, families, and photography-minded drivers

A day to watch Blue Impulse

If the Matsushima Air Base training schedule aligns with your visit, see the observation deck and retired aircraft display first. Eat before the lunch rush or after looking skyward. The VR experience offers an introduction to the aviation city even when no real flight is visible.

Michi-no-Eki Higashimatsushima → observation deck and VR → second-floor dining → Blue Impulse viewing parking area or Yamoto Coastal Green Park.

Training changes with weather and operational duties. Check the air base's official training schedule and the city's viewing guidance, and allow extra time on busy days.

An inbound Sanriku Expressway lunch break or a return trip from the Ishinomaki area

A quick stop to eat and shop

If you have time for a meal, head upstairs for nori ramen, oysters, or a miso-based set meal. For something lighter, try zunda sweets or coffee downstairs, then browse nori, processed seafood, and vegetables. Food alone makes this a satisfying stop.

Retail area → second-floor dining or first-floor light meals → convenience store and toilets → departure.

Cars cannot travel between the PA-side and local-road-side parking areas. Decide whether you will enter from the expressway or local road before arriving.

Families with preschoolers and visitors facing uncertain weather

With children, rest indoors before going outside

Locate the kids' area, tourist information, light meals, and toilets first; then it is easier to head to the observation deck and outdoor display. Children may love seeing aircraft, but wind and sun can make a long outdoor stop tiring. Keep a meal or sweet treat as an indoor option.

Toilets and kids' area → observation deck → light meal or dining → retail area.

Lunchtime on holidays can be busy. With a stroller or infant, several short breaks may work better than a visit centered on one meal.

Days when you want to see the sea or travel beyond the roadside station

Half a day in Oku-Matsushima

After tasting Higashimatsushima's food at the station, continue to Aomina, the Oku-Matsushima sightseeing boat, the Jomon Village, and the Tsukihama or Nobiru area. Begin with food and aviation, then finish with coastal and island scenery.

Michi-no-Eki Higashimatsushima → Aomina / Oku-Matsushima sightseeing boat → Oku-Matsushima Jomon Village History Museum → Tsukihama or Nobiru area.

Coastal facilities depend on weather, wind, and seasonal schedules. Check that boats are operating and beaches are open that day before setting out.

Spring photos and a short tour around the city

Spring cherry blossoms and skies

In spring, combine Takiyama Park's cherry blossoms with a chance to watch Blue Impulse for a distinctive Higashimatsushima photo. Have lunch and shop at the roadside station before going to the park, even if your time is short.

Michi-no-Eki Higashimatsushima → Takiyama Park → Blue Impulse Street or the Yamoto Station area.

Neither peak blossom season nor training flights are fixed. If one does not line up, make the food and shopping the focus of your visit.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

A diaper-changing station and an indoor rest area help, but keep time on the observation deck and by the display short according to wind and sun.

Ages 2-3
★★★★☆

Short visits to the kids' area, sweets counter, and observation deck help keep young children engaged. They may react enthusiastically if aircraft appear.

Ages 4-6
★★★★☆

VR, the retired aircraft display, and observation deck can make the aviation city engaging at this age. Light snacks can help while waiting for a meal.

Primary school age
★★★★★

Combine Blue Impulse, VR, and views with nearby viewing spots or the coastal park for both learning and play.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Choose the expressway side or local-road side first

Cars cannot drive through between the Yamoto PA side and the city-road side. Decide whether you are making an inbound Sanriku Expressway stop or a detour into Higashimatsushima before entering.

  2. 2
Take in the view before eating

In clear weather, look at the sky and sea first to appreciate the station. This may also help you avoid the peak dining period.

  3. 3
If dining is crowded, switch to snacks and shopping

When the second-floor dining area is busy, you can still enjoy local flavors through zunda sweets, coffee, nori, and processed seafood from the shop.

  4. 4
Allow more road time on air festival and training days

The city warns that nearby roads may be busy on weekends and holidays. Allow extra travel time around the station on aviation-related days too.

Observation deck

A key place to watch training flights and look toward the Pacific. The experience depends on weather, so make use of clear conditions when you have them.

Tourist information and VR experience

An introduction to Blue Impulse and Higashimatsushima tourism. It adds an aviation experience even when training flights are not visible.

Permanent retired aircraft display

The display of retired Blue Impulse T-4 aircraft No. 731 has made the station an even stronger aviation landmark and a draw for photos.

Retail and light-meal area

On event days or when it is crowded, zunda sweets, drinks, and take-home products offer alternatives to a full meal.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The station itself can be a weekend destination

The station drew many visitors soon after opening, and the city notes possible nearby road congestion on weekends and holidays. Visitors come for the new facility, Blue Impulse, food, and shopping, so keeping options beyond a single lunchtime meal can make the visit more enjoyable.

The aviation experience remains when Blue Impulse does not fly

Training flights depend on weather and scheduling. The VR experience, observation deck, and retired aircraft display can still make a visit worthwhile on days without a flight.

Nori, oysters, and zunda make the food memorable

Travel features and reviews strongly emphasize Blue Impulse, but a meal is often remembered through specific foods such as nori ramen, oysters, miso, and zunda. When travel companions want different things, dining, snacks, and shopping make it easier to split the visit.

Children can enjoy the displays and VR while adults browse the shop

With a kids' area and VR experience, this station offers more than shopping. Children can enjoy aircraft and aviation displays while adults choose nori, processed seafood, or vegetables.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Illustrative image — not an on-site photograph
A full meal

Nori ramen / oysters / Choju miso dishes

For a meal centered on the second-floor dining area, look first for dishes with Higashimatsushima nori, oysters, or miso. Even if you came for the aircraft, the food brings out the area's character.

Lunch can get busy. Leave room to visit the observation deck or shop before eating.

Add something sweet

Aoba Zunda Honpo / zunda soft serve

Zunda sweets made from mashed edamame suit a short break or a treat for children. Even without a full meal, they give you a small taste of Higashimatsushima.

The light-meal area is generally open until 17:00. Check the time if you are visiting for sweets in the evening.

Pause for a drink

Coffee Kobo Ishikawa (珈琲工房いしかわ)

Take a break between drives, while waiting for training flights, or before heading to Oku-Matsushima. Drinks also help when your group splits between meals and sweets.

Tourism and light-meal areas have different hours from second-floor dining; check the individual shop.

Take food home

Nori / processed seafood / rice / vegetables

Look beyond nori and processed seafood to rice and vegetables. Choosing something for dinner as well as a souvenir is part of the appeal of a local produce shop.

Local produce varies by season and time of day. Come earlier if you are concerned that a particular item might sell out.

An early or late fallback

Convenience store / 24-hour toilets

The convenience store and toilets make the station useful for a Sanriku Expressway break outside the main building's business hours.

Tourist information and dining are unavailable early or late. For food, use 9:00 onward as a general guide; dining begins around 11:00.
