Nono's stopover notes

Plan the family's break so the visit goes beyond Royce'.

Nono Kuzumi sees this station as a place to coordinate the family's needs, not just a large shopping area. Use the toilet first; choose Royce' or the farm market for shopping, the restaurant or bakery for food, and the Kankaku Museum if it rains. At a busy station, a little planning about the order of stops helps adults and children alike.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki A La Date is a popular roadside station in Iwadeyama, Osaki City, on National Route 47 toward the Naruko hot spring area. Eating, shopping and resting are easy to combine here. A permanent Royce' counter grew out of the sister-city relationship with Tobetsu, Hokkaido; there is also Royce' soft serve, a farm market supplied by more than 200 producers, a restaurant and a bakery. It works for a short break or a shopping trip. Holiday lunchtimes can be busy, so families may find it easier to allow time for the outdoor food stalls, bakery, nearby Kankaku Museum or Naruko hot springs instead of relying on the restaurant alone.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Royce' makes shopping a reason to stop

One of the few permanent Royce' counters outside Hokkaido sells chocolates and original products. Many people come specifically to shop here, rather than just stopping on the way to Naruko. On holidays, allow for crowds at the shelves and checkout.

02

Royce' soft serve, a bakery and outdoor food give you meal options

You can sit down for a set meal at Gofuku no Date-chan Kitchen, or have something lighter from Date-chan Bakery, Royce' soft serve or an outdoor stall. Sweets and bread are useful alternatives when children are choosy or the restaurant has a wait.

03

Take Osaki's seasons home from the farmers' market

The farmers' market says that more than 200 producers bring vegetables each morning. Vegetables, rice, sansai (wild mountain vegetables), mushrooms and handmade processed foods change with the seasons. Consider what you will eat during the trip and what you can take home.

04

Get organized before visiting Naruko or Iwadeyama

The station is about 23 minutes via National Route 47 from Furukawa Interchange and a three-minute walk from JR Ikezuki Station, making it accessible by car or rail. Before Naruko, stop for the toilet, lunch, souvenirs and event information; on the way back, pick up chocolate or vegetables.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Days heading toward Naruko on Route 47 from Furukawa Interchange

Settle the family before heading to Naruko hot springs

On arrival, use the toilet first, then visit Royce' or the farm market. If it is nearly lunchtime, try Gofuku no Date-chan Kitchen. If the children cannot wait, switch to the bakery or Royce' soft serve. You can take care of food and shopping before entering the hot spring town.

Parking → toilets → Royce' and farmers' market → meal or sweet treat → Naruko hot springs

Parking and meals can both get busy at holiday lunchtimes. Work backward from your hot spring accommodation's check-in time.

A drive focused on shopping

Spend a focused hour at Royce' and the farm market

Choose chocolates at Royce', browse vegetables and processed foods at the farm market, then pause for soft serve or bread. The station is large; picking two main shopping goals can make a one-hour stop more satisfying than browsing every aisle without a plan.

Royce' → farmers' market → A La La Yokocho → Royce' soft serve

Seasonal and popular products depend on deliveries and the time of day. If you find something you want, choose it then.

Families with toddlers or elementary school children; rainy or very hot days

On rainy days, combine the station with the Kankaku Museum indoors

Eat and shop at the station, then head to the Kankaku Museum in Iwadeyama if you have time. The station itself is not a place to tire children out through play; an indoor experience can balance adults' shopping with children's need for activity.

Station → Kankaku Museum → Former Yubikan if time allows

The Kankaku Museum has closing days and a last admission time. Check its official information around Mondays and in the late afternoon.

Adults, trips with grandparents or children of elementary school age and older

Add a short history stop at the Former Yubikan

For more of Iwadeyama, eat and shop at the station, then visit the Former Yubikan and its garden. A short walk through this garden associated with the Date family shows how the station's “Date” name connects to local history.

Station → Former Yubikan and Garden → central Iwadeyama

Weather changes the feel of the garden. On rainy days, the Kankaku Museum may be a more practical alternative.

Naruko Gorge drives around mid-October to mid-November

Keep the Naruko Gorge trip manageable in foliage season

Traffic and parking around Naruko Gorge can be unpredictable during autumn foliage. Use the station's toilet and have a light meal or shop first. Decide on a short walking route through the gorge to keep a family day manageable.

Station → Naruko Gorge → Naruko hot spring area, or revisit the station on the return trip

Only designated sections of the Naruko Gorge trail open at set times, and weather may cause closures.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Good for a toilet stop and a short shopping visit.

In a crowded sales area, you may mostly need to carry a baby. Use the toilet first, then choose either Royce' or the farm market to reduce the load.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Short breaks for soft serve or bread make the stop easier.

This is not a station built around play equipment for running about. If the meal wait looks long, switch to the bakery or Royce' soft serve and take a break in the car.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Easy to combine shopping, a sweet treat and a short nearby visit.

Royce' soft serve gives children a clear goal. On a rainy day, the Kankaku Museum can keep them occupied.

Elementary school age
★★★★☆

Connect food and local culture with Iwadeyama's history and Naruko's nature.

You can connect Royce' and the sister-city relationship, the Iwadeyama Date family and the landscape of Naruko Gorge in one day. Decide walking distances ahead of time in foliage season or the hot spring town.

Use the toilet first

The station is large, so locating the toilets before entering the shops also makes it easier to meet up again.

Switch to light food at the lunch peak

With a bakery, outdoor food and soft serve, there is no need to wait only for the restaurant.

Consider the Kankaku Museum on rainy days

If shopping at the station leaves children with time to fill, move on to an indoor experience.

Allow extra travel time in foliage season

Seasonal crowds and trail conditions toward Naruko Gorge change. Settle your plans at the station first.

Spaces used for events

Outdoor stage events

Official notices announce weekend stage events. On those days, a short visit for food and shopping may turn into a longer stay.

Tethered hot-air balloon experiences

These events are announced month by month and depend on the weather. Check the date, time, price and registration conditions shortly before planning around one.

A La Date Summer Festival

A call for food trucks was posted for the planned August 13–15, 2026 event. During the summer holiday period, plan for crowds and parking demand.

Fresh greens and autumn foliage at Naruko Gorge

The green scenery from spring through summer and the autumn colors give Naruko different appeal by season. Check which trail sections and hours are open before combining visits.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Holiday lunchtimes can be busy at this popular station

Visitor accounts often mention a busy car park even though it is large, and lively checkout lines and shops on holidays. If the front area is full, look toward the back parking area and keep meal options open.

Royce' is a major reason to visit

Features and reviews often describe visitors coming for Royce' chocolate and soft serve. Allow your companions time to shop; a sweet treat or bread can make the wait easier for children.

A 30–60 minute stay can still be rewarding

The toilets, Royce', farm market and light food are close together, so even a brief stop feels worthwhile. On the way to Naruko hot springs, leave room in the schedule for the next part of the trip.

Plan around seasonal Naruko crowds

The station lies on Route 47 toward the hot springs and foliage sights, so expect crowds during Naruko Gorge's autumn colors and summer holiday events. Toilets and a light meal at the station can ease the next stop in the gorge or hot spring town.

Rail access is possible; a car makes larger purchases easier

JR Ikezuki Station is a three-minute walk away, so this can be a stop on a rail trip. A car is easier for buying plenty of Royce' products or farm produce; also think about carrying and keeping purchases cool on the return journey.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Secure first

Seasonal and original Royce' products

When shopping is your main purpose, browse before eating. It helps you focus even when the station is busy.

For lunch

Set meals and noodles at Gofuku no Date-chan Kitchen

A good option when adults want a substantial meal. It generally opens from 11:00; allow for a wait at peak times.

Share with children

Date-chan Bakery, Royce' soft serve and outdoor food

Easy smaller choices when the restaurant is hard to use or children are selective about food.

Take home

Local vegetables, rice, sansai, mushrooms and handmade processed foods

Separate these from food for the trip and bring a taste of Osaki to the next day's table.

When crowded

Bread, soft serve, souvenir sweets and nearby indoor attractions

If the restaurant and checkout lines are long, stop for a light bite and continue toward Iwadeyama or Naruko.
