How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

See first
Strawberries, vegetables and rice at the farm market

Look for freshly picked produce and fruit first. In summer, a cooler bag helps you choose what to buy.

To eat
Yokozuna soup curry or seasonal soft serve

Go to the restaurant for lunch, or choose strawberry or seasonal soft serve for a short break. Check serving hours for each shop.

With children
Plan toilets, nursing and a sweet treat first

Use the nursing room, diaper changing table and multipurpose toilet, then head to a nearby park for a longer play stop.

In spring
Tulip fields west of the station

Usually late April to early May. Check the flowers and parking crowds, and keep meal plans flexible.

Beyond the station
Byodotsunuma or Naganuma Futopia Park

Choose Byodotsunuma for a quiet walk or Naganuma for playground equipment.

Nono’s detour notes

Eat, shop, then choose where to play: Yoneyama makes an easy family crossroads.

Nono Seto sees this station as a base for toilets, a meal, a sweet treat and shopping before the next play stop, as well as a destination for flowers. In spring there are tulips; at other times, the farm market and yokozuna dishes. If children still need to move, head to Byodotsunuma or Naganuma. Its mix of options lets a family turn a short break into a half-day outing even when everyone wants something different.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Yoneyama is a roadside station on National Route 346 where you can take a break over Tome vegetables, rice, strawberries, seasonal fruit and yokozuna dishes at the restaurant. Tulips in the fields west of the station are a major spring attraction. On an ordinary stop, strawberry soft serve, soup curry and local vegetables offer a taste of Yoneyama. Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Start at the farm market for freshly picked vegetables and strawberries

Tome City says the market focuses on fruit and vegetables picked that morning and highlights strawberries, tomatoes, melons, passion fruit and rice. If you are shopping during a drive, check the produce first with your journey home and refrigeration in mind, then save soft serve for last. That makes it easier to separate shopping from your break.

02

Choose between a yokozuna meal and a lighter sweet treat

At Restaurant Waiwai, distinctive choices include yokozuna soup curry and a set meal of miso-grilled Junmai pork, both named for Maruyama Gontazaemon, the third yokozuna, or grand champion of sumo. You can stop for a full lunch or take a short break with strawberry soft serve or a seasonal flavor such as passion fruit or melon.

03

See the fields west of the station in spring, or explore nearby wetlands and parks

Tulips usually bloom in the fields west of the station from late April to early May. You can eat and shop at the station after seeing the flowers. Outside the flower season, combine a walk at Byodotsunuma Fureai Park with the play equipment at Naganuma Futopia Park to give children and adults a chance to move around.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 20–40 minute shopping break

Take a Route 346 break with strawberries and vegetables

After parking, visit the toilet and browse the farm market for vegetables, rice, strawberries and seasonal fruit. If it is not mealtime, finish with strawberry or seasonal soft serve before getting back in the car. Even a short stop can give you a taste of Yoneyama.

Parking → toilets → farm market → soft serve → departure

Fruit and soft serve vary by season and availability. Stock may run low in the evening, so an earlier visit is safer if shopping is your main aim.

An adult lunch break or a substantial family meal

Make lunch the focus with a yokozuna dish

Make Restaurant Waiwai’s yokozuna soup curry or miso-grilled Junmai pork set meal the focus of lunch. Afterwards, see the statue of Maruyama Gontazaemon and buy local vegetables or rice to take home, linking the meal to the area’s history.

Toilets → Restaurant Waiwai → Maruyama Gontazaemon statue → farm market

Listed restaurant hours are shorter than the farm market’s. For a late lunch, leave room to switch to soft serve or shopping.

A family drive from late April to early May

During tulip season, see the flowers before eating

In spring, walk through the fields west of the station first, allowing time for flowers and photos before returning indoors. Days with bulb and farm produce sales also draw more visitors. Keep soft serve or market shopping as an alternative to a tightly timed meal.

Parking → tulip fields → toilets → sweet treat or lunch → farm market

The 2026 tulip festival was listed for April 22–May 6. Treat those dates as past seasonal information and check the announcement for the year you visit.

A half-day outing with preschool or elementary-school children

Move on to a park when children need room to play

After nursing, toilets, a meal and a sweet treat at the station, go to Byodotsunuma Fureai Park for a walk or Naganuma Futopia Park for playground equipment. Use the station as a food and rest stop and the park as the place to be active; this also makes it easier to adapt after rain or during crowds.

Rest and eat at the station → Byodotsunuma or Naganuma → head home

The parks are mainly outdoors. Consider heat, rain and parking during cherry blossom or flower season when deciding between a short walk and a longer playground visit.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★★☆

The nursing room, diaper changing table and multipurpose toilet make a short break easier.

Nurse, change diapers and shop at the station. Keep outdoor flower-field or park visits short according to the weather and how easily a stroller can move.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Soft serve and flowers can be fun, but the station is not a place for extended play.

Use the toilet and have a sweet treat first to help keep small hands off market goods. For active play, continue to Byodotsunuma or Naganuma.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Tulips, soft serve and the yokozuna statue make small goals for a visit.

Walking through the flower fields first can make a spring visit more satisfying. On rainy days, keep the meal and shopping brief and skip an extra outdoor park if needed.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Combine food, flowers, local sumo history and park play.

Use the yokozuna dishes and Maruyama Gontazaemon statue to introduce local history. If time allows, continue to Byodotsunuma’s floating boardwalk or Naganuma’s roller slide.

Spaces used for events

Yoneyama Tulip Festival

Tulips can usually be enjoyed in the fields west of the roadside station from late April to early May. In 2026, the event was listed for April 22–May 6, with free admission and bulb sales from 9:00 to 16:00.

Maruyama Cup Youth Sumo Tournament and Children’s Sumo Tournament

The city describes sumo events honoring local-born Maruyama Gontazaemon, the third yokozuna, or sumo grand champion, around August and November. Check each year’s event dates.

Byodotsunuma cherry blossoms and illumination

Byodotsunuma Fureai Park changes with the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, water lilies and lotuses in summer, autumn foliage and migratory birds in winter. Check the city’s annual notices for the cherry blossom festival and illumination.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Shopping makes a worthwhile stop beyond spring

City and tourism association information highlights freshly picked vegetables and fruit, strawberries, rice and flowers. Outside tulip season, the farm market still makes a good break for buying Tome ingredients.

Seasonal soft serve is worth seeking out, but flavors change

Strawberry soft serve is limited to roughly December through June; passion fruit and melon have their own seasons. If you are coming for a sweet treat, check current shop or recent notices for the flavors on sale.

Separate flower time from shopping during tulip season

The 2026 Yoneyama Tulip Festival took place in the fields just west of the station, with bulb and farm produce sales listed. See the flowers first, then return for toilets and a sweet treat instead of squeezing flowers and a meal into the same time slot.

Family facilities suit a break; add a park for play

Listings show a nursing room and diaper changing table, making a station break easier, but this is not a place for extended play. At Byodotsunuma or Naganuma Futopia Park, choose a walk or playground equipment to suit the children’s ages.

The restaurant brings local history into the meal

The Maruyama Gontazaemon statue and yokozuna dishes offer a way to connect a farm market stop with local sumo history. Outside lunch hours, switch to soft serve or market shopping.

Spring brings cherry blossoms, tulips and wetland walks nearby

Byodotsunuma, Minamikata Senbonzakura and Naganuma Futopia Park all gain seasonal appeal in spring. At busy times, choosing the station and one outdoor destination can be less tiring than fitting all three into a day.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Use 9:00–18:00 as the basic guide for the farm market; prefectural market information also lists closing at 18:30 from April to October. Follow current shop and official notices.
  • Listed hours for Restaurant Waiwai are shorter than those for the farm market. For a late lunch, switching to soft serve or market shopping can keep your plans flexible.
  • Visitors head to the fields west of the station during tulip season. With small children, use the toilet first and keep the walk through the flowers short.
  • Strawberries, melons and passion fruit vary by season and delivery. From morning to early afternoon offers more choice if shopping is your purpose.
  • Byodotsunuma suits a walk; Naganuma Futopia Park suits playground time. In rain or extreme heat, focus on a station break and shorten outdoor plans.
  • The location works with National Route 346 and the direction of Monou-Toyosato Interchange on the Sanriku Expressway. On a day trip from Sendai, take a break at the station before exploring more of Tome City.
