Highlights

This small roadside station is attached to Fudai Station on the Sanriku Railway. It is no sprawling complex, but it packs in foods made with Fudai kelp: soft-serve ice cream, udon, cold noodles, suki-kombu (thin sheets of kelp), and kelp powder to eat, buy, and talk about. Close to Fudai IC, it is an easy stop before or after Fudaihama Seaside Park Kiraumi or Kurosaki Park. A short break for kelp soft serve and souvenirs suits it as well as a lunch stop.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

A small station packed with kelp products

Fudai Village offers many kelp-based products, from soft serve and noodles to pickles, powder, and karinto (crisp sweet snacks). Beyond the novelty, the station is a good place to find souvenirs you can use at home.

02

Where the Sanriku Railway meets a road trip

Attached to Fudai Station, it works both as a stop while waiting for a train and as a quick break from the Sanriku Coastal Road. Near Fudai IC, the station makes an easy starting point for the coast, shopping street, and Kurosaki.

03

Plan your next stop before heading for the blue sea

Pick up a drink and a sweet before a walk at Fudaihama Seaside Park, add views and bathing at Kurosaki, or find another snack on the shopping street. The station is a useful junction for exploring Fudai.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Midway along the Sanriku Coastal Road

A 15-minute stop just for kelp soft serve

Close to Fudai IC, this is an easy break on a long drive. Eat a soft serve, browse suki-kombu and kelp noodles, and use the toilets; even a short stop gives you a taste of the station.

Drive from Fudai IC to the station. Briefly browse the shop and light meals, then continue toward the coast, Kuji, or Tanohata.

The cafe and fresh fish counter have separate hours. If a meal is your main reason to stop, check the official hours for each outlet.

Families and days for seeing the sea

Half a day with Fudaihama Seaside Park Kiraumi

Choose a light meal and souvenirs at the station, then go to Fudaihama Seaside Park Kiraumi. Its white sandy beach, green space, and rest facilities make a good place for children to stretch after a car ride.

Michi-no-Eki Aonokuni Fudai -> Fudaihama Seaside Park Kiraumi -> Hama no Sanchoku Kiraumi. Enjoy the beach in good weather; switch to a short walk if it is windy.

Wind and sunshine change how the shore feels. Even in summer, bring a light layer, drinks, and something to deal with sand.

A Sanriku drive for adults

Add Kurosaki views and a bath

After buying kelp souvenirs at the station, head to Rikuchu Kurosaki Lighthouse and the Kurosaki viewpoint. If time allows, add a daytime bath at the public lodging Kurosakiso for a slower look at Fudai's blue sea.

Roadside station -> Kurosaki Park and Rikuchu Kurosaki Lighthouse -> Kurosaki viewpoint -> Kurosakiso.

Fog and yamase, a cool sea wind, can obscure the views. On a hazy day, leave room to make bathing or a meal the focus instead.

Snacks and extra shopping

Find another Fudai flavor on the shopping street

After browsing the kelp products at the roadside station, venture a little farther to Abiroad Shopping Street. An official model itinerary highlights a butcher's kelp croquettes, a confectionery shop, and souvenirs from local stores.

Leave the car near the station and walk from Fudai Station toward the shopping street. A short stroll offers a glimpse of village life beyond the roadside station.

Individual shops have closing days and may sell out. If you have a particular shop in mind, check its hours first.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

A nursing room and diaper-changing table make this a useful care stop during a journey.

The station has no large indoor play area, so a short break suits it better than a long stay.

Ages 2-3
★★★☆☆

Have a light meal at the station, then head to the green space at Fudaihama Seaside Park in good weather for room to move.

Preparing for sand, wind, and sun makes a shore visit easier for parents.

Ages 4-6
★★★★☆

Kelp soft serve and the feel of a station where trains can be seen make for an easy short detour.

If a meal looks likely to involve a long wait, combine shopping and a nearby walk first.

Primary school children
★★★★☆

Combine the Fudai floodgate, Sanriku Railway, lighthouse, and coast to start conversations about disaster preparedness and the landscape.

Kurosaki Park has striking views, but judge the weather and walking distance before going too far.

Nursing and diaper changes

Listings show one nursing space and one diaper-changing table.

Rainy day

You can eat, shop, and rest inside the station, while the coast and lighthouse are much more weather-dependent.

Stroller

The station itself is relatively easy to use; assess the ground and wind before walking along the coast or at Kurosaki.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Take a break at the station first

Parking, toilets, shop, and rest area are together, making it easy to get settled before heading to Kurosaki or the coast.

  2. 2
Pair a short Kurosaki view with a bath

If you want to limit walking, take a brief look from the viewpoint, then rest at Kurosakiso.

  3. 3
Keep your plans flexible around meal times

The cafe and lunch are sometimes listed with short serving periods. You can still enjoy the station for souvenirs and sweets without rushing.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Fudai Station and roadside station area

The area sometimes hosts anniversary events and serves as the main venue for Fudai Matsuri. Parking and meal queues can differ from ordinary days during events.

Abiroad Shopping Street

A shopping-street stroll or a Joyful Day event brings you closer to the village's stores beyond the roadside station.

Fudaihama Seaside Park Kiraumi

Beach yoga and other seaside events sometimes take place here. It is pleasant in clear weather; keep the visit short when winds are strong.

Kurosaki Park

The lighthouse, views, and Kurosakiso pair well; the scenery also inspires photography and painting projects.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Kelp soft serve may win over even skeptics

Travel accounts and reviews often describe initial surprise at the kelp-and-soft-serve combination, followed by a memorable match between saltiness and milk. If you choose just one sweet, this is the most distinctive to the station.

Allow for serving times and limited quantities

The Aonokuni Burger has limited quantities, the cafe and lunch may have short serving periods, and fresh fish sales have different hours. Keeping lunch plans flexible lets you move on to the shop, sweets, and souvenirs.

For train fans, the adjoining station is part of the fun

The roadside station is integrated with Sanriku Railway Fudai Station, so even visitors coming only for the roadside stop can sense the tracks and station building. Families and train enthusiasts can enjoy a brief look around before or after shopping.

The coast shines in clear weather, but wind changes the experience

Fudaihama Seaside Park Kiraumi offers white sand and green space. Wind, sunshine, and fog affect comfort on the Sanriku shore, so pick up drinks or a light meal at the station and plan to enjoy even a short visit.

If Kurosaki is hidden, a bath is another option

The Kurosaki viewpoint and Rikuchu Kurosaki Lighthouse are strong destinations in clear weather, but yamase sea winds and fog can weaken the views. Pair them with a daytime bath at Kurosakiso for a drive less dependent on the weather.

On event days, the station forecourt becomes a venue

During anniversary events and Fudai Matsuri, the roadside station and Fudai Station area host festivities. Shopping can be more enjoyable, but allow more time for parking, eating, and getting around than on an ordinary day.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The shop is listed at 8:00-17:00 and the cafe/light-meal counter at 9:00-16:00, while the tourism association gives separate hours for the cafe, lunch, and fresh or grilled fish. Check the relevant outlet's hours if you are coming to eat.
  • Parking is listed for 25 passenger cars and 18 large vehicles. Even for a short break, allow extra time at lunch or during events.
  • A nursing room and diaper-changing table make this a useful stop for children's care. For longer play, add Fudaihama Seaside Park outside the station.
  • Wind and sun change Fudaihama Seaside Park; fog and yamase sea winds change Kurosaki. In uncertain weather, keep shopping at the station or a bath at Kurosakiso as options.
  • Fudai Village's official site, Aonokuni Fudai's official social media, and northern Iwate event listings update village events. Shortly before a dated event such as Fudai Matsuri, check the venue and transport information.
  • Food and direct sales inside the station share its main map pin. The nearby suggestions focus on the coast, Kurosaki, and shopping street as easy next stops.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Sweet

Kelp soft serve

A good first choice: the aroma and saltiness of kelp powder meet sweet milk, making an approachable treat with a story to tell.

Availability and price may change; check the day's notices at the shop or light-meal counter.

Light meal

Aonokuni Burger, kelp udon, cold kelp noodles

The limited-quantity burger and noodles made with kelp suit a lighter lunch. Kelp fans can enjoy a taste of Fudai in both the noodles and broth.

Limited items and meals depend on stock and serving hours. Later in the day, focus on souvenirs if food has sold out.

Direct sales and souvenirs

Suki-kombu, tororo-kombu, kelp powder

Dried kelp and powder make useful gifts for home cooking. Add suki-kombu (thin kelp sheets) to simmered or stir-fried dishes, and kelp powder to fried foods or soups for a taste of Fudai after the trip.

Stock varies by season and delivery. Compare familiar staples with new products.

Snack souvenirs

Kelp karinto, pickled kelp, Kokujiyaki mug

The station staff's product picks include sweets and pottery as well as other foods. Choose among sweet and savory snacks and a keepsake; karinto is a crisp, sweet Japanese snack.

The staff recommendations on the official site often feature new products. If you spot something you want, it may be worth picking it up then.

Extra shopping by the sea

Hama no Sanchoku Kiraumi

If you go to Fudaihama Seaside Park, consider its seafood direct-sales shop too. Buy kelp at the roadside station and seafood by the shore to make each shopping stop distinct.

The beachside direct-sales shop lists irregular closing days. Treat it as an optional addition to a coastal walk.
