How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First, on arrival
Look for Iwaizumi goods to take home in the school store

Iwaizumi yogurt, Ryusendo water, local sweets, seasonal wild vegetables and mushrooms, and woodcraft give this small stop a strong local character.

At lunchtime
Choose a branch school dish in the lunch room

Options include a changing school lunch style set, Branch School ramen, milk ramen, and Ryusendo black pork ginger rice bowl. Hours are approximately 11:00–15:00.

For a lighter stop
Kinako fried bread, croquettes, or soft serve

If you do not want to wait for a restaurant meal, try a snack or sweet from the school store.

If heading to Ryusendo Cave
Use the toilets and prepare a jacket here

The cave has stairs and feels different from outside in any season. With infants, plan to carry them instead of relying on a stroller.

From winter to early spring
Check roads and seasonal food

Snow and ice can affect this mountain area. Winter kibidango dumplings are another seasonal pleasure.

For a half-day outing
Add either Ryusendo Cave or Hayasaka Highland

Choose Ryusendo for caves, or Hayasaka Highland for cool mountain air and highland food. Adding one destination makes for an easier outing.

Highlights

Mitakai Branch School is a rest stop in Iwaizumi with the atmosphere of an old elementary school. Browse Iwaizumi yogurt, Ryusendo water, kinako fried bread (fried bread dusted with roasted soybean flour), and Shorthorn beef croquettes in the school store. In the lunch room, choose between a changing school lunch style set, Branch School ramen, and milk ramen. It is a small stop, yet a useful place between Morioka and Ryusendo Cave to enjoy Iwaizumi dairy products and mountain produce before a cave visit.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Enjoy school memories through food and shopping

The building recalls a schoolhouse: the shop is called the school store and the dining area the school lunch room. With desks and chairs, it offers more than a roadside break and gives you a sense of having visited Iwaizumi. A piece of fried bread, a bowl of milk ramen, and yogurt to take home suit this small stop better than an extended shopping trip.

02

A quick taste of Iwaizumi dairy and mountain produce

The school store carries Iwaizumi dairy products, local sweets and sake, seasonal wild vegetables and mushrooms, and crafts. In the lunch room, a changing school lunch style set, Branch School ramen, Ryusendo black pork ginger rice bowl, milk ramen, and winter kibidango (millet dumplings) make tempting reasons to stop. Even without a sit-down meal, fried bread or soft serve adds a taste of Iwaizumi.

03

A useful pause before or after Ryusendo Cave

Mitakai Branch School is a small stop on Route 455 as you enter Iwaizumi from the Morioka side. A toilet break, snack, and shopping here make the mountain drive to Ryusendo Cave more comfortable. The cave has cool passages and stairs, so it is practical to sort out jackets and hungry children before going.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive into Iwaizumi on Route 455 around lunchtime

Eat and recharge on the way from Morioka to Ryusendo

After the mountain drive from Morioka along Route 455, Mitakai Branch School is a welcome pause. Eat Branch School ramen or a changing school lunch style set in the lunch room, then get water or something sweet at the school store before Ryusendo Cave. With stairs and cool air inside the cave, eating and using the toilets here makes the next leg easier.

Morioka area → Mitakai Branch School → Ryusendo Cave

The lunch room has relatively short serving hours. If you visit Ryusendo first, allow time to return for lunch.

A 15–30 minute break during a long drive

Take a taste of Iwaizumi home on a short stop, even without a restaurant meal

Even a brief visit can include kinako fried bread, a Shorthorn beef croquette, Iwaizumi milk soft serve, Iwaizumi yogurt, or Ryusendo water. If others are waiting in the car, a quick circuit of the school store and a sweet treat are still reason enough to stop.

Parking → school store → 24-hour toilets

Popular snacks may run low at certain times. Soft serve or coffee may be alternatives.

A break with preschoolers or elementary school children

Enjoy the branch school atmosphere with children

This is not a place for hours of playground time, but school desks, school lunch style meals, and the school store can appeal to children. If the restaurant wait grows long, switch to fried bread, milk, or soft serve. A toilet stop in the middle of the mountain drive also helps.

Parking → toilets → school lunch room or school store

With infants or toddlers, do not plan on a long indoor play session.

Adults seeking natural scenery

Choose Ryusendo or Akka Cave instead of squeezing in two caves

Iwaizumi has both Ryusendo Cave and Akka Cave, one of Japan’s longest cave systems. Lunch at Mitakai Branch School followed by Ryusendo is an easy plan; cave enthusiasts might make Akka the main destination instead. Both require attention to footing, stairs, and temperature changes, so a lighter meal and shopping stop here can help.

Mitakai Branch School → Ryusendo Cave or Akka Cave

Akka Cave normally operates from mid-April to late November; for winter entry, contact the operator. Check opening dates and the last entry time for the day.

A clear day from May to November, with a detour toward Morioka

Add Hayasaka Highland for a taste of the mountain season

Hayasaka Highland Visitor Center is generally open May–November. Its wildflowers and highland snacks such as soba mochi, skewered mochi, and tofu dengaku make another stop worthwhile. Shop for Iwaizumi goods at Mitakai Branch School, then head up to the highland if time and weather allow. Winter road closures and seasonal shutdowns are reasons to leave it out.

Mitakai Branch School → Hayasaka Highland Visitor Center

The visitor center is listed as closed Thursdays and during December–April. Check mountain weather and road conditions.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Eat branch school style

Changing school lunch style set / Branch School ramen

For the full experience of school desks and atmosphere, head to the lunch room. On a meal-focused visit, plan around 11:00–15:00; avoiding the midday peak may make for a calmer stop.

Daily specials and seasonal dishes change. Check official notices if you have a particular dish in mind.

Choose Iwaizumi dairy

Iwaizumi yogurt / Iwaizumi milk soft serve / milk ramen

Dairy is a quick way to taste Iwaizumi. Even without time for the lunch room, soft serve or yogurt to take away makes a satisfying stop.

If taking dairy on a long car journey, consider how to keep it cool.

Have a small snack

Kinako fried bread / Shorthorn beef croquette / Iwaizumi minced-meat cutlet

These work well when you want less than a full meal or a child needs a snack. They also provide a bite before Ryusendo Cave.

Fried foods and bread may sell out at some times of day.

Take a pizza break

Margherita with special cheese / miso offal pizza

Pizzas made with low-moisture mozzarella from local milk and Iwaizumi ingredients offer a different option from the lunch room. They can also be shared.

Pizza house hours are approximately 10:00–15:30; availability may change.

Take something home

Ryusendo water / local sweets / sake / wild vegetables and mushrooms

The small school store brings together Iwaizumi products. Shopping before the cave or highland may help you avoid forgetting souvenirs on the return trip.

The range of seasonal wild vegetables and mushrooms depends on deliveries.
