How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

Eat first
Restaurant Shiosai

Seafood rice bowls, Shiosai bindon, and Hamaiso ramen are the main choices. Around lunchtime, decide early in light of ferry departures or your Jodogahama plans.

To shop
Fresh fish, bindon, and Miyako salt

Walk through the first-floor souvenir and local produce areas for seafood, local sake, traditional sweets, and vegetables in one place.

For something sweet
Umi no Megumi soft serve

A Unineko Cafe favorite, suitable after a meal or during a short wait for the ferry.

To go outside
Uminekomaru ferry or Shiokaze Park

Add harbor views to make the stop more than a shopping break.

To visit a market too
Miyako City Gyosai Market in the morning

A drive of a few minutes before or after the roadside station lets you choose Sanriku fish from early in the day.

Tabito Nanjo's harbor notes

Eat seafood, choose bindon, and walk a little around the harbor.

Tabito Nanjo sees this as more than an add-on to Jodogahama. Choose lunch at Restaurant Shiosai, take home seafood and sweets from the shop, then add harbor time on the Uminekomaru ferry or in Shiokaze Park. Eating, shopping, and walking are close together, making the station an easy weekend drive destination.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Miyako, affectionately called Seatopia Naado, is a roadside station at Miyako Port. On the first floor, shop for fresh fish, seafood, bindon (seafood packed in a jar), Miyako salt, and local sweets. Upstairs at Restaurant Shiosai, have a seafood rice bowl or Hamaiso ramen, then finish with Umi no Megumi soft serve. Alongside a visit to Jodogahama, you can fit in the Miyako Uminekomaru ferry at Desaki Pier, adjacent Shiokaze Park, and Miyako City Gyosai Market, which opens in the morning, for a half day at the harbor.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Eat and shop at the harbor in one stop

The first floor has a wide range of fresh fish, seafood, souvenirs, local sake, Miyako salt, Unineko character goods, and vegetables from local producers. With a fish market directly opposite, look beyond lunch for something to take home or a sweet snack for the car.

02

Choose between Restaurant Shiosai and Unineko Cafe

Restaurant Shiosai on the second floor overlooks Miyako Bay and suits a lunch of seafood rice bowls, Shiosai bindon, or Hamaiso ramen. For a shorter stop or dessert, Unineko Cafe before the main entrance serves Umi no Megumi soft serve made with deep ocean water.

03

The Uminekomaru ferry and Shiokaze Park are within walking distance

The Miyako Uminekomaru ticket counter is inside, while the departure point at Desaki Pier and Shiokaze Park are close by. Time a sailing around a meal or let children stretch their legs outside; the harbor makes this more than a highway rest stop.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

About 90 minutes before or after visiting Jodogahama

Plan a harbor lunch before Jodogahama

Coming from the Miyako Port IC, first check Restaurant Shiosai's hours. Have a seafood rice bowl or Hamaiso ramen for lunch, then shop for bindon, seaweed, and Miyako salt before driving to Jodogahama. This makes a natural sequence of food and scenery.

Park → Restaurant Shiosai → souvenirs and local produce → drive to Jodogahama

Menus may be suspended and hours changed during busy periods such as Obon. Leave room to switch to Unineko Cafe or shopping if a particular meal is unavailable.

A day to see Jodogahama from the water

Plan around an Uminekomaru departure

Check your plans at the ticket counter inside, then walk to Desaki Pier to board. Add soft serve or shopping after the trip to fill any waiting time. Weather and sea conditions can cancel sailings, so check the day's operating status first.

Ticket counter → Desaki Pier → Miyako Uminekomaru ferry → Unineko Cafe

The regular timetable lists Desaki departures from 9:00 to 16:10 when all seven sailings operate. Tuesday closures apply in April–June and September–December except holidays; some sailings are reduced in colder months, and January–March has a special winter timetable.

Families with preschool and elementary-age children

For families, keep meals short and take playtime outside

Inside are a nursing room, outdoor restrooms, and an elevator, covering the basics for food and shopping. If sitting for a long meal is difficult, pick up Umi no Megumi soft serve and change the pace in adjacent Shiokaze Park in the sea breeze.

Restroom → Unineko Cafe or restaurant → Shiokaze Park

The tidal pool's depth changes with the tide. Check signs on site and accompany young children.

A weekend drive centered on food to take home

Link the morning fish market with the roadside station

See sashimi and fish at Miyako City Gyosai Market in the morning, then add bindon, seaweed, sweets, and local sake at the roadside station for a fuller shopping trip. A cooler bag broadens your choices in summer or on a long drive.

Miyako City Gyosai Market → Michi-no-Eki Miyako → Miyako Port IC or Jodogahama

The fish market is generally closed Wednesdays. Services such as eating purchased fish there or receiving chopsticks may change; follow the market's current guidance.

Switch from the restaurant to soft serve or the park if a long meal is difficult.

An adult should accompany children at the tidal pool and waterfront. When crowded, use the restroom before eating.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The station is along Route 45, but reached by turning toward the harbor

Visitor reviews often pair it with Jodogahama or Miyako Port, and some mention the turn off the main road. It works best as a planned stop involving Miyako Port IC, Desaki Pier, or Jodogahama, rather than a passing break.

Have a backup when coming specifically for seafood

Restaurant Shiosai's seafood rice bowls and Shiosai bindon are appealing, but some menu items may be suspended and hours changed in busy periods. Keep Unineko Cafe, prepared and processed foods in the shop, and Gyosai Market in mind if crowds or sellouts disrupt plans.

Soft serve is a small destination after a meal or while waiting for the ferry

Umi no Megumi soft serve, made with deep ocean water, is regularly featured by official and tourism information and visitor accounts. Even without a full seafood meal, it gives you a reason to take a sweet break by the harbor.

With children, change the pace outside by the harbor

The station has a nursing room and restrooms; adjacent Shiokaze Park has play equipment, a tidal pool, and a sea fishing area. After a long drive or while waiting for a table, some time outside can help the family reset.

Shop for seasonal seafood

The shop features seasonal wakame, Miyako trout salmon, sea urchin, sea pineapple, oysters, hairy crab, and cod. Bring a cooler bag or consider shipping to bring Miyako flavors home.

Treat the ferry as a weather- and season-dependent outing

The Miyako Uminekomaru connects Desaki Pier with the Jodogahama area, subject to weather and sea conditions. Tuesday closures apply in April–June and September–December except holidays, with fewer sailings in parts of the year. If it does not sail, enjoy the harbor in Shiokaze Park or the shop.
