Kazama (風間 旅人)'s Shizukuishi notes

Stop for a break, and you may also plan dinner, a bath and time by the river.

Kazama (風間 旅人) sees Shizukuishi Anecco as a place where eating, shopping and bathing fit into one simple route. Look for freshly picked vegetables and mountain produce at the farmers' market, pick up wasabi and rice at the souvenir shop, then have lunch at Komakusa or Shizuku-an. If time remains, take a bath; if the children need a break, cross Anecco Bridge. A Route 46 rest stop becomes a Shizukuishi detour.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Shizukuishi Anecco stands on Route 46 between Morioka and Akita. It brings together dining, a farmers' market, a souvenir shop, a day-use hot spring, a soba shop, a campground and a riverside park. The souvenir hall was renovated in 2023. Sanchoku Shizukuishi sells freshly picked vegetables, wild mountain vegetables, mushrooms, bread and mochi sweets; Bussan Shizukuishi offers local rice, wasabi, rapeseed oil, meat miso, sake and souvenirs from along the Iwate–Akita route. For a meal, choose Komakusa for Shizukuishi beef and wasabi dishes, Shizuku-an for house-made yukimuro soba (buckwheat noodles stored in snow), or Kobiru Kitchen for the Anecco Burger and Hitomebore rice soft serve. You can bathe at Hashiba Onsen Shin Hashiba no Yu, cross Anecco Bridge to play by the river in Koyanagisawa Sabo Park, or extend your stay with camping and the dog run. It works for a short stop or half a day. Editor Kazama (風間 旅人) describes it as a place to restock your table with Shizukuishi flavors and relax in the hot spring before or after the mountain pass.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Take the flavors of Shizukuishi home from the farmers' market and souvenir shop

Sanchoku Shizukuishi has freshly picked vegetables, wild mountain vegetables in spring, mushrooms in autumn, pickles, bread and mochi sweets. Bussan Shizukuishi widens the choice to local rice, wasabi, rapeseed oil, meat miso, sake and souvenirs from the Iwate–Akita route. A break on Route 46 can become a shopping stop for dinner and gifts.

02

Choose Komakusa, Shizuku-an or Kobiru Kitchen for your meal

For a full lunch, try Komakusa; for house-made yukimuro soba, buckwheat noodles stored in snow, go to Shizuku-an; for a snack, choose Kobiru Kitchen. Shizukuishi beef, wasabi, Shizukuishi minced-meat cutlets and Hitomebore rice soft serve give you several ways to eat at the same station.

03

Ease the strain of the mountain pass at the hot spring

Hashiba Onsen Shin Hashiba no Yu is a day-use alkaline simple hot spring, with a sauna, open-air bath and tatami-mat rest area. It is worth staying beyond the shopping stop, whether you are crossing Sengan Pass or ending a visit to Koiwai and Shizukuishi.

04

Cross Anecco Bridge for riverside play and camping

You can walk from the station car park across to Koyanagisawa Sabo Park. The short route suits a quick outdoor break for children or dogs, or a camping trip that includes the hot spring.

05

A useful junction for touring Shizukuishi

Head east toward Lake Gosho and Koiwai Farm, or west toward mountain hot springs and Akita. You can also have lunch and shop here during the day before an evening event on the Shizukuishi Galaxy Ropeway.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Lunch on the way from Morioka toward Akita, or after crossing Sengan Pass

Turn a Route 46 lunch break into a Shizukuishi food stop

Choose a Shizukuishi beef or wasabi dish at Komakusa, or make Shizuku-an's yukimuro soba the purpose of your stop. Afterwards, look for vegetables at the farmers' market and wasabi products or sake at the souvenir shop. Even a short break can give you a taste of Shizukuishi.

Park → eat → farmers' market → souvenir shop → Route 46.

Shizuku-an closes on Wednesdays and over New Year, and posts changed winter hours. At busy mealtimes, allow for switching to the snack counter.

A long drive, a rainy day, or the return from mountain sightseeing

Add a hot spring bath to recover from a travel day

Hashiba Onsen Shin Hashiba no Yu adjoins the station, so you can move from shopping and dining straight to a bath. With a sauna, open-air bath and tatami-mat rest area, it makes a Route 46 break a longer pause.

Farmers' market and souvenir shop → meal or snack → hot spring → onward journey.

Check official notices for last admission, maintenance closures and New Year closures. Drivers should also allow time to rest after bathing.

Summer visits with children or dogs, and campground scouting

Let children stretch with riverside play and a snack

Cross Anecco Bridge to Koyanagisawa Sabo Park. Its shallow water and lawns offer children a change from the car, especially alongside a snack or soft serve from Kobiru Kitchen.

Kobiru Kitchen → Koyanagisawa Sabo Park → farmers' market → hot spring if wanted.

Check the weather and rising water levels; prepare for insects and a change of clothes. At the open camping sites, also consider how far you must carry your gear.

Family camping, camping with dogs, fishing and riverside time

Plan a camping trip with a hot spring bath

Nijiiro Park adjoins the roadside station and advertises discounted hot spring admission for campers. Buy ingredients at the farmers' market, enjoy the sound of the river and stars at night, then return for a bath or extra supplies the next morning.

Check in → set up camp → farmers' market and souvenir shop → riverside → hot spring.

Book and choose your site early for weekends and holidays. The campground is by Route 46; if road noise bothers you, consider site position or earplugs.

A half-day or full day touring Shizukuishi

Continue to Koiwai Farm, Lake Gosho and the Galaxy Ropeway

Have lunch and shop at Shizukuishi Anecco, then spend the afternoon at Koiwai Farm or Lake Gosho. If aiming for the evening Shizukuishi Galaxy Ropeway, taking care of food and souvenirs during the day makes the night event easier to fit in.

Roadside station → Koiwai Farm / Lake Gosho → Shizukuishi Galaxy Ropeway.

Check Koiwai Farm and the Galaxy Ropeway for seasonal events, opening dates and weather-related service changes.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for a short hot spring, dining and shopping visit. The tatami-mat rest area and baby care room are helpful.

Keep time by the water and waits at a busy restaurant short. Plan breastfeeding, diaper changes and bathing time in advance.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

Kobiru Kitchen, soft serve and the riverside beyond Anecco Bridge can offer a welcome change of pace.

Stay close even in shallow water, and bring spare clothes and suitable shoes. Eating before the rush or adding a snack can help.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Riverside play, lawns, camping and the hot spring can make a day that extends beyond the station.

In summer, focus on the water; on rainy days, switch to the hot spring and shopping.

Soba-making, camping and riverside play can be combined with Koiwai Farm or the Galaxy Ropeway.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The official site covers the hot spring, dining, farmers' market, souvenir shop and campground separately

These facilities together make the station a base for combining dining, shopping, a day-use bath, the riverside and camping, beyond a stop at the shop.

Kobiru Kitchen offers another option when the restaurant is busy

The Anecco Burger, Hitomebore rice soft serve, leaf-wasabi udon and grilled rice balls offer local snacks without sitting down in the restaurant.

Koyanagisawa Sabo Park offers space for children and dogs by the water

The official campground information describes shallow water that can be crossed to the opposite bank, plus lawns and waterside walks. Bring spare clothes in summer and check conditions before entering the water.

Campground reviews praise the river, stars, visits with dogs and hot spring, while noting holiday crowds and Route 46 noise

As a visitor experience pattern, planning reservations and site choice for weekends and holidays, road noise at night and the walk to open sites can make a trip smoother.

West of the station, Route 46 continues through mountain country, making this a useful rest and resupply stop

Travel reviews also often point to its range of facilities as a reason to stop on the Morioka–Akita route.
