How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First things first
See the lake and visit the shop

This is a small station; combining scenery, shopping, and a short rest works better than coming solely for a meal.

To take something home
Edel Wein and Ohasama souvenirs

Choosing wine is a main pleasure here. If you are driving, choose a bottle to take home and open later.

With children
A short park visit and lakeside walk

This is better for a break from the mountain road than a long play session on equipment. Watch children near the water and road.

Heading into the mountains
Check restrictions, weather, and winter closures first

Routes toward Mount Hayachine are affected by traffic restrictions and winter gates. On hiking or kagura days, check shop hours and road information separately.

For an evening view
Choose a Hayachine Dam illumination date

Illuminations take place for events and seasonal programs. The mountain roads are dark after sunset, so plan a manageable return trip.

Highlights

Roadside Station Hayachine is a small stop at the foot of Mount Hayachine beside the Hayachine Dam reservoir. Come to look over the lake, choose Edel Wein and other Ohasama products in the shop, and pause before heading into the town of kagura, a traditional performing art, and wine. It is a place for a short break rather than a long stay at a large food court. With the shop closed on Tuesdays and through winter, a spring-to-autumn mountain drive suits it best.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Lake Hayachine is the highlight here

Hayachine's appeal is the time spent by a window or on the lake side looking toward Hayachine Dam and the mountain ridges, rather than a restaurant or a large farm market. Even a brief stop feels like a change of scene. On a clear day, walk a little farther to the Friendship Bell or lakeside park to stretch after driving.

02

Shop with Ohasama wine in mind

The shop's signature is Edel Wein, known for wine made with grapes grown in Iwate Prefecture. Find a bottle here, then add Wine Château Ohasama if time allows. Drivers can focus on grape juice and bottles to take home rather than tastings, so everyone in the group can enjoy the stop.

03

A practical break before kagura and the mountain

For plans involving Hayachine Kagura, Mount Hayachine, dam illuminations, or a wine festival, this stop can be both a destination and a waypoint. Driving conditions on Prefectural Routes 25 and 43 change with season and weather. A timely toilet, shop, and lakeside break helps.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A drive from Morioka or Shiwa through Ohasama toward Mount Hayachine

A short mountain-road break overlooking Lake Hayachine

Hayachine suits a short stop to get out of the car, see the lake and mountains, and look around the shop more than a long food crawl. The Hayachine Dam reservoir, green mountains, and quiet parking area make it a useful change of scenery during a drive.

From National Route 396, take Prefectural Route 43 or 25. The station fits a break before or after mountain driving.

The shop closes on Tuesdays and in winter. From winter into early spring, do not plan the stop around shopping.

Adults who want to add a little food and shopping to their detour

Buy Ohasama wine and continue to the direct-sales shop

Browse Edel Wein at the station, then head to Wine Château Ohasama if you want a wider choice. You can make it a station-only shopping stop or extend the trip to the direct-sales shop. With a driver in the group, souvenirs, grape juice, and wine for home are better shared options than tasting.

Roadside Station Hayachine → Wine Château Ohasama, on the way back toward central Ohasama.

The direct-sales shop's guide hours are 9:00–16:30. Check official information before a shopping trip because winter closing days and New Year hours may change.

A day visiting Hayachine Kagura, Kagura no Yakata, or Hayachine Hall

Make a cultural detour on a kagura day

Ohasama holds Kagura Day mainly on the second Sunday of each month, offering a chance to encounter Hayachine Kagura, a traditional dance and music performance. A lakeside pause before the performance connects the mountain setting with local religious and village culture. Plan the main meal elsewhere and use the station for shopping and a break before or after.

Roadside Station Hayachine → Kagura no Yakata / Ohasama Community Revitalization Center.

Kagura performance dates and venues may change. Allow extra time for parking and travel on performance days.

The Forest and Lake season, Hayachine Shrine festival eve, or the wine-festival period

Enjoy an illumination day, including the journey home

Hayachine Dam is illuminated on selected days, and it can be seen from lakeside parks. Rest at the station in the evening, then see the reservoir area when the lights come on. This means driving mountain roads at night; decide on your route home, fuel, and dinner before you go.

Roadside Station Hayachine → park near Hayachine Dam → back toward Ohasama or Hanamaki.

The announced July 21–31, 2026, 18:30–21:00 illumination period has passed. Watch for weather or event changes and check the prefecture's current schedule before visiting.

Roadside-station rest facilities
Varies by facility

There are toilets, a rest area, a park, and parking. Plan on the shop being closed in winter.

These are guide hours from Edel Wein's official access information; winter closing days and other details may change.

Ohasama Folk Culture Preservation and Training Hall

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★☆☆☆

Less suited to nursing or a long stay, but useful for a short toilet stop and fresh air outside the car. Do not rely on the shop during its winter closure.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Children can move around a little in the park or by the lake. Water and road are close, so hold hands and keep the outing short.

Ages 4–6
★★★☆☆

Children old enough to appreciate the Friendship Bell and lake view may enjoy the stop. Treat it as a break from the mountain drive rather than a playground destination.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

The dam, lake, kagura, and wine town provide ways to talk about the area. Pairing the stop with the Hayachine Dam Learning Center or Kagura no Yakata makes an educational detour.

Event

Spaces used for events

Lake Hayachine shore and nearby parks

This area is close to views of the Hayachine Dam illuminations and the Forest and Lake season. A short extension from the station to a lakeside park makes the visit more memorable.

Muraki Honten shop

The small shop is the place to choose Edel Wein and souvenirs. Stock may change with the season and time of day; enjoy seeing what is available.

Nearby kagura and wine venues

Kagura Day, the Ohasama Wine Festival, and Japan Wine Festival take place at other venues in Ohasama. Use the station for a break, shopping, and a lakeside detour before or after.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Small shop, strong wine impression

Visitor accounts often notice Edel Wein despite the modest shop size. Enjoy a quick browse and consider a meal in central Ohasama or toward Hanamaki instead of planning a full meal here.

The lake view from the eat-in area lingers in memory

Recent visit accounts highlight the view of Lake Hayachine and Hayachine Dam from the Ryū no Ko Café and eat-in area. Make time to sit and look, even on a short stop.

Bear-deterrent sounds and the mountain setting

Some reviews remember both the quiet surroundings and the sounds of safety measures in this mountain setting. A short break can help you take in the place and reset for the next part of the drive.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The shop is open 9:00–17:30, closed Tuesdays and in winter. From winter into early spring, do not count on it being open.
  • Iwate Prefecture says Hayachine Dam cards are distributed at the roadside-station shop during its operating season, 9:00–17:30 except Tuesdays. Outside the shop's season, distribution is at the Hayachine Dam management office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 9:00–16:00, or at the Hanamaki Civil Engineering Center. Distribution arrangements may change. A dam card is a collectible information card about a dam.
  • The published 2026 Hayachine Dam illumination dates (April 29–May 6, July 21–31, and July 31–August 1) have passed. Other illuminations may be held; check Iwate Prefecture's Hayachine Dam page for the latest information.
  • Hanamaki City has published 2026 vehicle restrictions for routes toward Mount Hayachine. Check the roads before combining hiking, kagura, and lakeside sightseeing in one day.
  • Wine Château Ohasama's guide hours are 9:00–16:30. It closes earlier than the roadside-station shop, so consider visiting it first if wine shopping is your priority.
  • The water, park, and road are close together; keep children in sight even on a short walk. For a nighttime illumination, allow time for careful footing and the return drive.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Buy a taste of Ohasama

Edel Wein / grape products / local souvenirs

Shopping is one of the strongest reasons to stop. Come to choose a bottle to open at home rather than expecting a full restaurant meal.

Do not drink while driving. If you want a tasting, check the hours and transport options for another facility such as Wine Château Ohasama.

Take a light break

Shop snacks / eat-in space / lake view

During a long drive, simply sitting down to look over Lake Hayachine is worthwhile. A small snack and the view make a good pair.

Do not expect the dining range of a large roadside station. Leave room for a meal in central Ohasama or toward Hanamaki.

Extend the wine trail

Wine Château Ohasama / direct-sales-only products / online shop

If a bottle catches your eye at the station, continue to the direct-sales shop. With a wine-loving companion, the station can be a starting point for exploring Ohasama's food culture.

The direct-sales shop closes earlier than the station. Watch for winter closing days and New Year holidays.

Add food through a seasonal event

Japan Wine Festival / Ohasama Wine Festival

The station is usually quiet, but on wine-event days Ohasama as a whole becomes the destination. Use the station for a break and lakeside views before or after.

Event venues may be away from the station. If drinking is part of the day, plan public transport, an overnight stay, or a designated driver in advance.

Prepare before or after a mountain walk

Drinks / food to carry / toilet break

On a day heading toward Mount Hayachine, a toilet stop and a chance to sort out drinking water here can make the trip easier. The station is useful for a practical break as well as shopping.

For trailhead access or traffic-restriction days, check shuttle buses, parking, and road restrictions separately.
