How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First stop on arrival
Akasawa Farmers' Market

If you want fruit or soft-serve ice cream, check the market before the restaurant so you are less likely to miss what is available.

For lunch
Hittsumi at Karintei

The restaurant focuses on local-ingredient dishes such as a Nambu hittsumi set meal. Its listed hours are shorter in winter.

To take home
Fruit, 100% juice and local sake

The Shiwa Town Products Hall also carries local sake, pottery and crafts. Looking through both the market and the products hall makes the choice easier.

For a short walk
Shiwa Fruit Park

Visit the winery and experience farm next to the station. Activities depend on reservations and the season, so check the details before making them the purpose of your trip.

In spring
Cherry blossoms at Shiroyama Park

During cherry blossom season, head to Shiroyama Park in the town center. Follow shopping at the market with blossom viewing or a walk.

To round off the day
La France Onsenkan

If the market and restaurant alone feel too brief, drive to the hot spring for a half-day outing. An onsen is a Japanese hot spring bath.

Decide what to eat and buy first

In Shiwa, make time to shop for fruit part of the trip

This station suits a visit that begins with today's fruit rather than a circuit of facilities: apples, grapes, peaches, juice and soft-serve ice cream. Add a Nambu hittsumi lunch or neighboring Fruit Park, and you have a short drive distinctive to Shiwa.

Buy

Look at seasonal fruit and juice first. Earlier hours can make popular products easier to find.

Eat

Have lunch at Karintei. If it is too late, switch to sweets and take-home items.

Explore

Fruit Park is within walking distance; Shiroyama Park in spring and a hot spring on the way home can fill half a day.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Shiwa makes the town's fruit-growing character easy to discover. Browse apples, grapes, peaches, vegetables and juice at Akasawa Farmers' Market; add local sake and crafts at the Shiwa Town Products Hall; and, at lunchtime, try a Nambu hittsumi set meal at Karintei. Hittsumi is a regional dish of hand-torn dough pieces in broth. This is not a large multi-facility stop, but the adjacent Shiwa Fruit Park is an easy walk away, linking food and shopping with a visit to the orchard hills. On a weekend drive, start with the market and sweets, then explore nearby places instead of planning the visit around the restaurant alone.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The farmers' market offers more than vegetables

Shiwa is known for fruit such as apples, grapes and peaches. At Akasawa Farmers' Market you can browse seasonal fruit, vegetables, 100% juice, soft-serve ice cream and gelato. Allowing a little extra shopping time can make this stop memorable.

02

Lunch at Karintei, or sweets and juice for a lighter stop

Karintei serves meals made with local ingredients, including a Nambu hittsumi set meal with hand-torn dough pieces in broth. If you cannot fit in a restaurant lunch, fruit, juice and rich soft-serve ice cream at the market offer another option.

03

The neighboring fruit park is part of the Shiwa experience

Shiwa Fruit Park sits close to the roadside station and connects visitors with a winery, hands-on workshop and experience farm. You can go beyond shopping to see the orchard hills and learn a little about the setting behind the wine.

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A weekend drive from southern Morioka toward Hanamaki

Make a fruit-buying trip along Route 396

Michi-no-Eki Shiwa is more rewarding as a destination for farmers' market shopping than as a simple rest stop. Browse apples, grapes, peaches, vegetables and juice, then take home what appeals. It is not an enormous station, but shopping becomes especially rich during fruit season.

On National Route 396. Guidance puts it about 20 minutes by car from Shiwa Interchange and about 15 minutes by car from Shiwa-Chuo Station.

Fruit selection changes with the season and time of day. If arriving late in the afternoon, keep sweets and processed products in mind too.

A day combining regional food with farmers' market shopping

Hittsumi for lunch, then a second look at the market

A Nambu hittsumi set meal is a fitting lunch choice at Karintei. Enjoy the chewy texture of the hand-torn dough, then return to the market to choose fruit and juice at leisure. If someone in your group skips the restaurant, soft-serve ice cream or gelato offers a lighter treat.

Check how busy the market is → lunch at Karintei → return to the Products Hall and market.

The restaurant closes earlier in winter, so avoid leaving lunch too late.

An adult outing focused on grapes, wine and workshops

Walk to Shiwa Fruit Park and see where the fruit comes from

The adjacent Shiwa Fruit Park has the Jien Jijo Wine Shiwa winery, a hands-on workshop and an experience farm. After buying fruit or juice at the roadside station, continue to the vineyards and winery to get a deeper sense of Shiwa.

Michi-no-Eki Shiwa → Shiwa Fruit Park. Approximately walking distance, or a very short drive.

Winery tours and activities may require reservations and have closing days. If you are driving, plan without relying on wine tasting.

A half-day drive with a seasonal stop

Cherry blossoms in spring, fruit in autumn, and a hot spring in winter

Add the cherry blossoms at Shiroyama Park in spring, fruit and grapes from summer into autumn, or La France Onsenkan on a cold day. A stop at the roadside station can then become a short trip. Exploring nearby places by season is more rewarding than spending the whole time at the station.

Spring: station → Shiroyama Park. Autumn: station → Fruit Park. Winter: station → La France Onsenkan.

Cherry blossom and grape-picking dates can shift; the hot spring also has closing days, including the third Wednesday.

Adults, cultural interests or uncertain weather

On a rainy day, combine shopping with a museum

When rain makes walking outdoors difficult, shop at the market and Products Hall, then visit the Nomura Kodo and Araebisu Memorial Museum for a quieter detour. Exhibits on Zenigata Heiji and SP records offer another way to encounter Shiwa's local history. SP records are early shellac phonograph discs.

Michi-no-Eki Shiwa → Nomura Kodo and Araebisu Memorial Museum, about 10 minutes by car.

The museum closes on Mondays and at other times. Check opening days if its exhibits are your main reason to go.

★★★☆☆

The infant care area and multipurpose toilet make a rest stop easier.

This is not a playground-focused station; it works best for shopping and a short break.

Ages 2-3

Soft-serve ice cream and fruit can make the visit enjoyable, but there are few places for extended outdoor play within the station.

If adding Fruit Park or Shiroyama Park, plan around the car ride and nap time.

Children can choose fruit, drink juice and see neighboring Fruit Park.

Workshops and grape picking depend on reservations and the season. Check conditions first if these are the main goal.

Fruit, the winery, Shiroyama Park and the museum can connect food with learning.

Choose the museum on a rainy day, or the park and farm in good weather.

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The farmers' market shines in fruit season; have a fallback for later in the day

Tourism information and social media highlight apples, grapes, peaches, 100% juice and soft-serve ice cream as core draws. For fruit, go earlier; later in the day, include processed products and sweets in your plans.

The texture of Karintei's hittsumi stands out

Travel and restaurant reviews mention the chewy Nambu hittsumi set meal, a choice of set meals and noodles, and a bright dining room. For a lunch-focused visit, account for shorter winter hours.

Explore beyond the station for a longer outing

The station itself centers on the farmers' market, Products Hall and restaurant. For a longer family outing, combine it with nearby Fruit Park, Shiroyama Park in spring, or the museum on a rainy day.

Opening hours differ among sources; check each facility

Published hours for Akasawa Farmers' Market differ between the regional development bureau, tourism information and social media; winter-hour changes have also been posted. Treat the listed hours as a guide and check the facility's latest notice if your visit depends on it.

Parking is compact compared with large stations

The listed capacity is 37 standard cars and 8 large vehicles. During events or fruit season, shifting your shopping time a little may make the stop calmer.

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

A full lunch

Nambu hittsumi set meal / Japanese-style steak set meal / other set meals

Choose Karintei if you want a sit-down meal at the roadside station. It is easy to return to shopping after trying the regional dish.

Listed hours are shorter in winter. For a late lunch, consider a light snack or sweets as well.

Choose from the farmers' market

Apples / grapes / peaches / vegetables / 100% juice

This is an easy way to take a taste of Shiwa home. In fruit season, the market alone can be a worthwhile destination.

The selection changes with harvests and deliveries. Popular items are easier to find earlier in the day.

A quick break for something sweet

Soft-serve ice cream / gelato / fruit juice

Even without a restaurant meal, a short stop can bring a taste of this fruit-growing town. It works well for families or a pause before changing drivers.

In winter or bad weather, use the market's opening hours as a guide.

Add a visit to the Products Hall

Shiwa sake / pottery / folk crafts

Look here for town souvenirs beyond fruit. Browse its shelves separately from the farmers' market.

If buying alcohol, keep the driver separate from any tasting.

Explore nearby food and activities

Jien Jijo Wine Shiwa / hands-on workshop / grape picking

For a trip centered on food and shopping, continue from fruit at the station to the winery and activities at Fruit Park.

Activities depend on reservations and closing days. Once your date is set, check the official guidance.
