Akari's shopping notes

At the gateway to the mountains, first decide what to eat and what to take home.

Akari Amamiya sees this station as a place to prepare for food before the Shirakami Mountains. Will you make lunch of Tsugaru Dam curry, pause for Shirakami raw-honey soft serve, or save beans from Shirakami Baisensha and mountain vegetables from the market for the journey home? Being able to choose comfortably before entering the forest is reason enough to stop at Tsugaru Shirakami.

Lunch

Choose Tsugaru Dam curry or juwari soba at Mori no Door.

Dessert

Add Shirakami raw honey to soft serve or gelato at BeFavo.

Souvenirs

Browse mountain vegetables, apples and coffee beans at the farmers' market and Shirakami Baisensha before heading home.

Highlights

On Prefectural Route 28 toward the Shirakami Mountains, Michi-no-Eki Tsugaru Shirakami is a gateway to Nishimeya Village with a produce market, Mori no Door restaurant, BeFavo's Shirakami raw-honey soft serve, Shirakami Baisensha coffee and a Tsugaru Shirakami Tours information desk in one place. Have Tsugaru Dam curry or juwari soba—noodles made entirely from buckwheat flour—for lunch, then pick up apples, edible wild mountain plants, Meya tofu and coffee beans on the way back. With more time, add the amphibious bus, BUNACO Nishimeya Factory or Shirakami Mountains Visitor Center for a drive that goes beyond eating and shopping.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Discover Shirakami flavors through a meal, sweets and coffee

At Mori no Door restaurant, choices include Tsugaru Dam curry, Mee-ya miso ramen, juwari soba made entirely with Nishimeya buckwheat flour, and limited-quantity Shirakami game dishes. After lunch, try BeFavo's Shirakami raw-honey soft serve or Shirakami Baisensha's charcoal-roasted coffee. It is easy to plan a meal, dessert and coffee in one stop.

02

Take the mountain seasons home from the produce market

The farmers' market stocks Nishimeya apples, vegetables, edible wild mountain plants and processed foods. The sense of being at the gateway to Shirakami shows up in everyday foods such as mountain vegetables, soba, Meya tofu and apple juice as much as in tourist souvenirs. If shopping on your return trip, plan how to keep perishables cool.

03

Check roads and tour arrangements before heading into Shirakami

The Tsugaru Shirakami Tours information center handles amphibious-bus applications and sightseeing advice. Routes toward ANMON and the Shirakami Line can be affected by the season, disasters and road conditions. During your meal break, check that day's roads, walking trails and bus service before setting off.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 60-minute break from the Hirosaki direction

Make eating and shopping the focus of a short stop

First browse the mountain vegetables, apples and Meya tofu at the farmers' market, then visit Mori no Door if it is lunchtime. Add BeFavo's Shirakami raw-honey soft serve or Shirakami Baisensha coffee afterward to sample Shirakami's water and forest produce in a short time.

Park → farmers' market → Mori no Door → BeFavo or Shirakami Baisensha → depart

Mori no Door mainly opens at lunchtime. If you arrive outside meal hours, leave room to switch to dessert, coffee or shopping.

Families with school-age children or adults seeking an experience

Build a half-day around the amphibious bus

Check in and use the toilets at the roadside station, enjoy Lake Tsugaru Shirakami aboard the amphibious bus, then return for a meal or dessert. Leave station shopping until after the lake trip so you do not have to carry purchases.

Tsugaru Shirakami Tours desk → amphibious bus → Mori no Door → farmers' market

The indicative operating season is late April to the end of October, except Wednesdays; reservations, weather and water levels can affect service.

Days heading toward ANMON and the beech-forest trails

Prepare information and gear before entering the Shirakami Mountains

In the morning, get drinks, do a little shopping and check sightseeing information at the station before heading toward ANMON. The Shirakami Line has unpaved sections and is prone to closures, so check road-opening information before leaving the station and be cautious about plans to drive through to Fukaura.

Roadside station → check road and trail information → ANMON → beech-forest walking trail

The ANMON area has winter closures and road restrictions. Follow the day's guidance on rain, falling rocks, bear precautions and toilet locations.

Weekends with uncertain weather

Find Nishimeya experiences indoors on a rainy day

Skip a forced outdoor walk and visit Mori no Door, Shirakami Baisensha, BeFavo, the Shirakami Mountains Visitor Center and BUNACO Nishimeya Factory. Food, coffee, woodcraft and exhibits still offer a taste of Shirakami when you cannot enter the forest.

Roadside station → Shirakami Mountains Visitor Center → BUNACO Nishimeya Factory

Check the BUNACO calendar and reservations for factory tours and making experiences. You may not see craftspeople at work during their lunch break.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★★☆☆

Short breaks and dessert at the station are convenient, but forest and lake activities require planning by adults.

Keep meals, toilets and market browsing brief. Infant fares are available for the amphibious bus, but consider noise, motion and weather rather than pushing the outing.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

Soft serve and the market can be fun; indoor exhibits and short breaks suit this age better than long walks.

Have lunch at Mori no Door, then switch to the visitor center or BUNACO Café on a rainy day.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Dessert, the amphibious bus and films at the visitor center can make memorable experiences.

The bus entering the lake and the large-screen films can be engaging. Decide on walking distance and toilet stops before heading toward ANMON.

Primary-school children
★★★★★

It is easier to include the amphibious bus, a BUNACO making experience and beech-forest walks.

Go beyond food to learn about the lake, woodcraft and forest. The Anmon Valley route needs suitable equipment and stamina; for a first visit, the beech-forest trail or visitor center is a natural starting point.

Check reservations and weather for the amphibious bus

It can be a highlight for school-age children, but operating dates, booking deadlines, weather and water levels may change plans.

Locate toilets before entering the forest

Some stretches beyond the beech-forest walking trail have no toilets. With young children, plan to turn back before going too far.

Switch toward indoor stops on rainy days

The Shirakami Mountains Visitor Center, BUNACO Nishimeya Factory, and the station's food and desserts still make for a Shirakami outing.

Plan different parking on event days

At events such as Nishimeya Land, the station car park may become part of the venue. Plan to walk from designated parking.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Checking event dates.

Spaces used for events

Nishimeya Land

A summer event with the roadside station as its main venue, combining stage shows, stalls, fireworks and hands-on activities. Parking and visit length differ substantially from an ordinary shopping stop.

Tsugaru Shirakami Tours desk

A station-based point for asking about the amphibious bus and village sightseeing. Use it to check operating dates, reservations and meeting places.

Shirakami Coffee Studio

Shirakami Baisensha's roasting experience requires advance booking. Consider it when you want to add an activity to a meal or shopping trip.

Seasonal displays and market produce

Mountain vegetables, apples and processed foods change the look of the shelves with the seasons. Stock and arrivals are not fixed, so enjoy what the farmers' market has that day.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

The station's strength is combining food and preparation before the Shirakami Mountains

The official site lists the farmers' market, Mori no Door, BeFavo, Shirakami Baisensha and Tsugaru Shirakami Tours separately. In one place you can move between lunch, dessert, coffee, shopping and tour reception.

Visit Mori no Door at lunchtime for the best selection

Mori no Door generally opens 11:00–14:00, extending to 15:00 on weekends and public holidays from April 18 to November 30. Tsugaru Dam curry and Shirakami game are limited in quantity, so late arrivals should be prepared to switch to coffee or dessert.

Mountain vegetables and apples change the feel of the farmers' market by season

The village's guide mentions local farmers' apples and vegetables and mountain vegetables gathered in Shirakami. Look for mountain vegetables in spring, apples in autumn, and more processed foods or coffee in winter: the shopping focus changes through the year.

The amphibious bus adds a new dimension to a station visit

The Nishimeya Dam Lake Tour handled at the Tsugaru Shirakami Tours desk departs from and returns to the station to explore Lake Tsugaru Shirakami. Reviews also emphasize the unusual moment of entering the lake, while reservations, operating days, weather and water levels can change plans. Treat it as a separate activity from a simple meal stop.

Event days change the parking plan

For Nishimeya Land in July 2026, the station announced days when its car park would be unavailable to general visitors during setup and the event. Large events offer more to do, but parking can be difficult if you arrive expecting an ordinary rest stop.

Check roads toward ANMON before committing to an itinerary

Even when parts of the Shirakami Line are open, sections from Tsugaru Pass toward Fukaura and Iwasaki may be closed. When heading from the station into the forest, check both trail and road-opening information and allow for turning back.
