How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

See first
The live-fish tank and open views toward the Japan Sea

When you enter, show the children the tank and the sea before they rush off. The stop can then be more than a restroom break.

To eat
Rockfish and seafood at Restaurant Ryuhaku

Nakadomari promotes its rockfish. If lunch is your aim, plan around the short 11:00–15:00 service window (last order 14:45).

To buy
Spear squid and processed seafood

Look at fresh and processed products separately to choose what to eat in the car and what to take home.

With children
Take a short walk to Orikoshinai Beach

On a fine day, the beach across the road offers a change of scene. In strong wind or rain, stay with the indoor tank and shopping.

For a drive
Follow the Ryuhaku Line to Chokandai lookout

In good weather, use the station as a supply stop before a scenic drive along the Japan Sea.

Akari's stopover notes

Tank, meal, then beach: an easy order for families.

Kodomari works well when you settle in at the station before packing in food and scenery. Children have the live-fish tank; adults have rockfish and spear squid. In fine weather, add the sea at Orikoshinai and the Ryuhaku Line. In rain, keep the indoor stop short. That sequence makes this remote coastal roadside station a useful family break.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Kodomari is a seasonal roadside station on the coast along National Route 339. Browse spear squid, rockfish, and processed seafood at the Pontomari shop; choose Nakadomari Mebaru-zen, a set meal built around local rockfish, or other seafood at Restaurant Ryuhaku. Children can take a break at the live-fish tank and Orikoshinai Beach across the road. With more time, follow the Ryuhaku Line up to Chokandai lookout for a drive that brings together the Japan Sea, Tsugaru Peninsula, and local food.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Seafood gives this stop a clear purpose

Kodomari is closely associated with spear squid and rockfish. The Pontomari shop has processed seafood, while Restaurant Ryuhaku offers rockfish and other seafood. Even a brief stop just for a meal or shopping gives a taste of the area.

02

Switch a child's break between the tank and the sea

The station's live-fish tank is an easy short attraction even for small children. If it is sunny, continue to Orikoshinai Beach; in rain or strong wind, keep the stop indoors with the tank, restrooms, and a little shopping. This coastal station works differently with the weather.

03

A supply stop before or after the Ryuhaku Line

Head north on National Route 339 for the Ryuhaku Line and Chokandai lookout. Use the station for restrooms, a meal, and shopping before the mountain road and its views. Check road information first in winter or severe weather.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A short break before or after the Ryuhaku Line

With 30 minutes, circle the tank and seafood shop

After parking, visit the restrooms, tank, and Pontomari shop in that order. Even outside mealtime, browsing processed spear squid and rockfish products gives a sense of Kodomari.

Parking → restrooms → live-fish tank → Pontomari shop → departure.

The station closes for winter. In early spring, late autumn, or severe weather, check operating days and road information first.

A coastal drive centered on food

Time lunch around rockfish and seafood

Restaurant Ryuhaku has a relatively short lunch service. If you want the rockfish set meal or other seafood, eat before heading to the beach or Chokandai lookout so a sellout or closing time does not disrupt the trip.

Restaurant Ryuhaku → Pontomari shop → Orikoshinai Beach or the Ryuhaku Line.

Seafood dishes vary with season, supply, and quantity. If you have a particular dish in mind, check official social media or notices on site.

A change of pace for preschool and elementary-school children

With children, go from the indoor tank to the beach

Start with a brief look at the live-fish tank inside the station, then go to Orikoshinai Beach if the weather is good. Even without playing in the water, looking at the sea and walking a little can refresh a drive.

Tank → restrooms → snack from the shop → Orikoshinai Beach.

Wind, waves, and sun strongly affect the beach. In rain, a shorter stop at the tank and shop is easier.

A scenic drive for adults

On a clear day, continue to the Ryuhaku Line and Chokandai

After eating and shopping, head north on National Route 339 to enjoy the Ryuhaku Line's views. Conditions change the experience at Chokandai lookout, so you may choose to go onward while the sky is clear.

Michi-no-Eki Kodomari → Ryuhaku Line → Chokandai lookout → toward Cape Tappi.

The Ryuhaku Line has winter closures and restrictions during severe weather. Check Aomori Prefecture road information before a scenic drive.

A day planned around an Orikoshinai Beach event

On a summer event day, use the station as a supply base

When the beach hosts an event such as the Beach Soccer Festa, the station's parking, restrooms, meals, and shopping become particularly useful. Set your meal time and return route in advance to make the family day easier.

Roadside station → Orikoshinai Beach event → shop or restaurant → return trip.

Parking and nearby roads are busier than usual on event days. Check event and traffic information shortly before visiting.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Works well for restrooms, brief shopping, and a look at the tank.

Keeping close to the indoor facilities and car is easier than a long walk to the beach. Do not extend the visit outside in strong wind.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

The live-fish tank, soft-serve ice cream, and a brief look at the sea make a good sequence.

Children need close attention at the beach. If you are not there for water play, a quick look at the shore before returning to the station is manageable.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The tank and Orikoshinai Beach offer a change of pace during the drive.

Watch the sun in summer and strong winds in spring and autumn. Keep outdoor play short before eating so you do not miss the lunch service.

Elementary-school children
★★★★☆

Adding the beach, campsite, and Chokandai lookout makes it feel like a full outing.

The views are the main attraction on the Ryuhaku Line. Allow for carsickness and a restroom stop before climbing the road.

Restrooms and a break

A useful restroom stop before the Ryuhaku Line. With children, stop once before lunch to make the visit easier.

Rainy days

Focus on the indoor tank, shop, and restaurant. Skipping the beach walk and Chokandai lookout may make for a better visit.

Outdoor play

Orikoshinai Beach is a highlight in fine weather. Keep the visit short in strong wind, high waves, or heat.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Outside the operating season, the station is a different stop

Kodomari is not a large year-round station. Its seasonal operation generally centers on mid-April through early November. For a Ryuhaku Line drive in early spring or late autumn, check the station's operation, the road, and the weather together.

Lunch is concentrated in a short window

Restaurant Ryuhaku generally serves lunch from 11:00 to 15:00. Reviews and trip reports often mention seafood and rockfish stops, so fix lunch time first if the meal is the focus of your day.

The tank offers a brief attraction for children

A live-fish tank inside the station introduces children to local seafood. This is not a station with extensive playground equipment, but for young children, the tank, a snack, and a brief look at the sea can make the driving break worthwhile.

The beach shines in fine weather; take care in strong wind

Nearby Orikoshinai Beach is a major draw, but wind and waves on the Japan Sea coast change the experience. With children, keep an indoor station break available so you can shorten time outside.

Weather and road information shape a Ryuhaku Line trip

Continuing to Chokandai lookout makes the Kodomari visit more memorable, but fog, strong wind, and winter closure affect the views. Use the station as a supply stop, then choose whether to go on while it is clear or eat at the station first.

Beach events make for a longer stay

When Orikoshinai Beach hosts an event such as beach soccer, the station becomes a base for meals and restrooms. Allow for busier parking and restaurant service, with room in the family plan for snacks or shopping.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • The operating season generally runs from mid-April to early November. Check official notices before visiting in winter or near the start and end of the season.

Food

Eating and shopping

Specialities, places to eat, sweets and bakeries can all give you a reason to stop. Check individual menus for current prices and availability.

Food mood

What would you like to eat?

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.

Make lunch the main event

Nakadomari Mebaru-zen rockfish set meal and seafood

For a day timed to the 11:00–15:00 lunch service (last order 14:45). This town specialty makes a memorable meal before the Ryuhaku Line.

Quantities and availability change. Check official social media or on-site notices if you want a particular dish.

Buy something to take home

Spear squid, processed rockfish products, and seafood

For bringing a taste of Kodomari to the table at home. It is easier to choose if you separate products needing a cooler from room-temperature souvenirs.

A snack for children

Soft-serve ice cream, light snacks, and drinks

For a stop too short for a restaurant meal. After the tank, a quick sweet treat or drink can make it easier to return to the car.

An alternative when busy

Processed products from the shop and a seaside walk

On holidays or event days, avoid relying entirely on the restaurant. Shop first and leave time for a short walk at Orikoshinai Beach to keep the trip flexible.

Choose with the season

Squid, rockfish, and seasonal seafood

Seafood varies with season and supply. Enjoy what is available that day rather than expecting the same menu each visit.
