How to enjoy

Choose how to enjoy your visit

Eat, shop, play, take in the view or rest. Choose from the station’s strengths to suit your day.

First on arrival
Decide whether to visit the Experience Tunnel

The Experience Tunnel takes about 40 minutes. Set your schedule early if you also want a meal and a walk around Cape Tappi.

For lunch
Visit Kaikyo Ajidokoro Ajisai between 11:00 and 15:00

Seafood rice bowls, matsukawa flounder and sea urchin ramen are among the choices. Come early for a particular dish, since quantities may be limited and the menu changes with the season.

With children
Plan the exhibits, Mogura train and restroom first

Indoor exhibits make a visit easier to plan in rain or strong winds. Bring an extra layer for the change in temperature underground.

In clear weather
Walk to Tappi Lighthouse and the Staircase National Highway

The cape can be windy. A short walk around the lighthouse is enough to enjoy the view.

For a winter trip
Check the closure dates first

Minmaya closes for winter. Around early November to mid-April, check official notices before driving there specifically for the roadside station.

For a half-day visit
Museum, lunch, Cape Tappi and Hotel Tappi

After lunch, take a short walk by the lighthouse and Staircase National Highway, then continue to the hot spring or an overnight stay.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Minmaya is a roadside station centered on the Seikan Tunnel Museum. Beyond a brief shop or meal stop, ride the Mogura train into the Experience Tunnel and see a construction passage 140 m below sea level, then walk to Tappi Lighthouse and the Staircase National Highway. Indoor exhibits offer families an option on rainy or windy days. At the Kaikyo Ajidokoro Ajisai restaurant, look for seafood rice bowls, matsukawa flounder and sea urchin ramen. The station closes for winter, so plan around its operating season.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The Seikan Tunnel Museum is the main attraction

This station rewards more than a quick look at the shop: make time for the Experience Tunnel. The Mogura train on the 14-degree Tappi Incline Line descends to a working passage 140 m below sea level, where you can walk through part of the tunnel construction site. For children it is a train ride and underground exploration; for adults, a look at the history of building the Seikan Tunnel. It makes the roadside station a destination in its own right.

02

Plan lunch at Kaikyo Ajidokoro Ajisai

The restaurant's hours are 11:00–15:00. Choices tied to the Tsugaru Strait include the Tappi seafood rice bowl, plentiful sashimi set meal, limited-quantity Cape Tappi matsukawa flounder set meal, sea urchin ramen and dried-fish broth ramen. Decide whether to eat or visit the Experience Tunnel first based on your arrival time.

03

Cape Tappi in clear weather; museum exhibits when the weather turns

When winds are strong over the Tsugaru Strait, shorten the outdoor walk and spend more time in the exhibition hall and Experience Tunnel. On a clear day, a walk to Tappi Lighthouse, the Staircase National Highway and the song monument extends the visit beyond the station. The indoor options also make rainy days easier for families.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Rail and civil engineering enthusiasts; families with curious children

Make the Experience Tunnel the centerpiece of a Minmaya visit

You can visit the exhibition hall alone, but the Experience Tunnel is worth building your visit around. The Mogura train takes you underground to walk through a passage used during construction of the Seikan Tunnel, an experience unlike a typical roadside station stop.

Parking → Museum entry → Experience Tunnel → Shop → Meal

The Experience Tunnel takes about 40 minutes. Plan backward from the restaurant's 15:00 closing time and the museum's closing time.

A lunch break on a Tsugaru Peninsula drive; adults seeking seafood

Turn a Route 339 rest stop into a lunch destination

At Kaikyo Ajidokoro Ajisai, options include the Tappi seafood rice bowl, matsukawa flounder and sea urchin ramen. On a drive along the Tatsudomari Line or toward Sotogahama, it can be a lunch destination in its own right.

Drive toward Tappi → Eat between 11:00 and 14:59 → Shop → Short cape walk

Come early if a particular meal is the main reason for your visit; some dishes are limited and menus change by season.

Families with children, bad weather and shorter outdoor walks

Use the indoor exhibits on rainy or windy days

Cape Tappi offers striking views and often strong winds. When being outside is uncomfortable, spend longer in the exhibition hall, gallery and Experience Tunnel. Information is also available on a multipurpose restroom and wheelchair loans, providing options for a visit with less outdoor walking.

Parking → Restroom → Exhibits → Experience Tunnel → Shop

Before going underground, allow for the temperature difference and visit length; bring an extra layer and use the restroom.

Photography enthusiasts and families wanting a short outdoor activity

Walk to Tappi Lighthouse and the Staircase National Highway on a clear day

After the museum, walk to Tappi Lighthouse and the Staircase National Highway for views of the Tsugaru Strait and an unusual local landmark. You need not climb all 362 steps: the lighthouse area alone gives a good sense of the cape.

Roadside station → Tappi Lighthouse → Upper or lower end of the Staircase National Highway → Roadside station

In strong winds or fog, or with small children, do not feel obliged to walk the entire route.

Visitors who do not want to rush a day trip from Aomori City; anyone staying around Tappi until evening

Add an overnight stay or hot spring to the trip

The station is about 80 km from Aomori Interchange. Instead of rushing there and back, consider Hotel Tappi or more time exploring the area. A visit can combine learning at the station, a meal, a cape walk and a rest overlooking the strait.

Michi-no-Eki Minmaya → Walk around Cape Tappi → Hotel Tappi

For travel after dusk, allow for the distance, fading light and road conditions; avoid overloading the return journey.

Family

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Ages 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Indoor exhibits and a multipurpose restroom help, but the Experience Tunnel involves time underground and travel below ground. Prioritize your child's mood and the timing of feeding and diaper changes.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

The Mogura train may be fun, though long explanations and the underground space may test a child's patience. Keep the outdoor walk near the lighthouse short.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The train, underground passage and model exhibits are easier to grasp at this age and give rainy days a focus. Walking only part of the Staircase National Highway can still be fun.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

The tunnel's design, construction tools and trip 140 m below sea level can become a learning experience. Children this age may also be ready to walk to the lighthouse and Staircase National Highway.

Restroom

Use it before the Experience Tunnel.

Rainy day

Even with a shorter outdoor walk, the exhibits and Experience Tunnel can fill the visit.

Outdoor activity

In strong winds or fog, or if young children tire, it is reasonable to stay near the lighthouse.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
Decide first whether to visit the Experience Tunnel

The approximately 40-minute visit changes how long you will stay. Depending on mobility and how tired your group feels, focusing on the exhibition hall is also reasonable.

  2. 2
Fit your meal into the short lunch window

The restaurant is open 11:00–15:00. Decide whether to eat before or after the Experience Tunnel to avoid a rush at closing.

  3. 3
Keep the outdoor walk short if it is windy

Cape Tappi has fine views but can be very windy. The lighthouse area or part of the Staircase National Highway can be enough.

  4. 4
Do not rush the return trip

The station is about 80 km from Aomori Interchange. For an evening return, consider darkness and road conditions; Hotel Tappi or other nearby lodging is another option.

Event

Make an event part of your visit

Permanent spaces and dated events are listed separately. Events can change both the atmosphere and crowds; use the official links for details.

Seikan Tunnel Museum

Open April 17 to November 3 for the 2026 season. Its winter closure makes the season a key part of planning a visit.

Experience Tunnel

An approximately 40-minute hands-on exhibit. More than a one-off event, it is an ongoing reason to make Minmaya a destination.

Tappi Lighthouse area

On days when the lighthouse interior opens or other cape events take place, it can be paired with a visit to the roadside station.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Adding the Experience Tunnel after arrival can squeeze lunch time

The Experience Tunnel takes about 40 minutes and the restaurant closes at 15:00. If you arrive after midday, decide at once whether to eat before or after the tunnel to make the family visit easier.

You can enjoy the Staircase National Highway without walking all of it

The Staircase National Highway has 362 steps and a height difference of about 70 m. With small children or in hot weather, walking just a portion is enough. Take photos, then continue to the lighthouse or song monument for a taste of Tappi.

Check both seafood dishes and alternatives for children

Alongside seafood rice bowls, matsukawa flounder and sea urchin ramen, the menu includes curry and chilled soba. Families with different tastes need not all choose seafood.

Tappikan temporarily closed on March 31, 2026; tourist inquiries go to the museum

Sotogahama Town advises visitors to contact the Seikan Tunnel Museum for tourist information after the temporary closure of the Cape Tappi tourist information center, Tappikan (龍飛館). This gives Michi-no-Eki Minmaya a larger role as a starting point for exploring Tappi.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.
