Akari's Lake Jusan notes

Eat shijimi, buy shijimi, then take in the lake.

Akari Makabe sees Jusanko Kogen as a stop families can navigate without fuss. First check the toilets and restaurant hours, settle lunch with shijimi ramen, choose live clams or processed products, then take in the view from the rise. Even a short stop with children can capture the character of Lake Jusan in that order.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Jusanko Kogen stands on elevated pasture beside National Route 339, overlooking Lake Jusan on the Tsugaru Peninsula. On clear days, views reach Mount Iwaki and the Sea of Japan. Also called Tosam Green Park, it sells live Yamato shijimi clams from Lake Jusan and processed clam products; the farm produce corner stocks local vegetables and pickles. Restaurant Warabi serves shijimi ramen, shijimi set meals and dishes made with Shiura beef. Editor Akari Makabe suggests planning a family stop around the meal, shopping, toilets and view so that a visit with children is easy to navigate.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Lake Jusan's Yamato shijimi, live or cooked

Lake Jusan is celebrated for its Yamato shijimi clams, praised as Japan's tastiest. The hall sells live clams and processed clam foods, while Restaurant Warabi serves shijimi ramen and a shijimi set meal. You can eat them here, take them home, or do both.

02

Shiura beef and local produce offer another reason to stop

The restaurant features dishes made with Shiura beef, and the farm produce corner sells local vegetables and pickles. You can shop for dinner ingredients and gifts alongside the clams.

03

Lake Jusan, Mount Iwaki and the Sea of Japan from elevated pasture

The station is on a rise above grazing land in Tsugaru Quasi-National Park. Goshogawara City describes a 360-degree panorama of Mount Iwaki, the Hakkoda mountain range and the Sea of Japan. On a fine day, the outdoor view can be the highlight of a break.

04

Family facilities together in one place

The national Michi-no-Eki association lists a baby changing bed, an accessible toilet and public Wi-Fi. A family can combine a meal, toilet stop and break in the same building before continuing its journey.

05

A break on a Tsugaru Peninsula drive

It is about 75 minutes from Namioka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway, about 15 minutes by car from Tsugaru Railway's Nakasato Station, and about 45 minutes by car from JR Gono Line's Goshogawara Station. Stop for food and supplies on the way toward Tappi or around Lake Jusan.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Lunch stop and National Route 339 drive

Choose shijimi ramen for lunch and take home live clams

If you arrive around lunchtime, check Restaurant Warabi's hours first. Shijimi ramen or a shijimi set meal brings Lake Jusan to the table. Afterwards, look for live clams and processed products in Tosam Plaza and vegetables and pickles in the farm produce corner.

Parking → Restaurant Warabi → Tosam Plaza product hall → farm produce corner.

The city's guide lists 10:30–16:00 for the restaurant, and it closes on Thursdays from November through March. Live clams need refrigeration, so consider your journey home and a cooler bag before buying.

Family drive and travel with infants or toddlers

A short break with children, toilets and a treat

Use the building's baby changing bed and accessible toilet first. If a long seated meal does not suit your child, soft-serve ice cream and the outdoor view can make a quick change of pace before the next destination.

Toilets and baby changing bed → soft-serve ice cream → view around the building → onward journey.

The Tosam Tower observation deck and large slide have been reported closed following wind damage in May 2022. Call ahead to check their status if play facilities are central to your visit.

Half-day Tsugaru Peninsula drive

Pair local sightseeing with a supply stop

Lake Jusan, Shiurando Kaiyukan and Wakimoto Beach are nearby lake and sea attractions. Have lunch and shop at the station, picking up farm produce gifts last so that chilled goods spend less time in transit.

Sightseeing around Lake Jusan → lunch and shopping at the roadside station → journey home.

In winter, the station closes at 17:00. An arrival after sunset may be too late for the product hall or restaurant.

When the weather turns

On rainy days, focus on food and shopping

Rain or strong winds make the view from this elevated station less enjoyable. Spend time at Restaurant Warabi, the product hall and farm produce corner instead, then let children rest in the Japanese-style tatami room before moving on.

Restaurant Warabi → product hall and farm produce corner → tatami rest room → onward journey.

Goshogawara City Tourism Association lists the tatami rest room. Follow signs on site for its current availability and hours.

The observation deck and large slide are reported closed

An account says that strong winds damaged part of the observation deck on May 31, 2022, and that the area around the slide was also closed. Current reopening has not been verified; call ahead if you hope to use the play equipment.

A tatami rest room and the view can give children a break

Goshogawara City Tourism Association lists a 50-tatami-mat Japanese-style rest room. On a clear day, views of Lake Jusan and Mount Iwaki add to the break.
