Akari's Oirase notes

Pack the flavors of Towada before driving to the gorge.

Akari Kosaka sees Roadside Station Oirase as more than a gateway to Oirase Gorge. Eat a stone-oven lunch, choose apple sweets, pick up drinkable yogurt, and pause on the lawn. The station lets you enjoy Towada's food before or after visiting its natural sights.

Highlights

Roadside Station Oirase is in Oirase Roman Park on National Route 102, linking central Towada with Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada. The Shikisaikan tourist products hall, Miraku Kobo handmade foods workshop, OIRASE BEER Brewery & Restaurant, and Ara, Ringo. Aomori Factory are grouped here. Stop for lunch before heading to Oirase, apple sweets on the way back, or local dairy products and apple gifts. A broad lawn and outdoor field offer a break from a long drive. Akari Kosaka recommends taking some of Towada's food home rather than ending the trip at the gorge.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Plan a meal before your gorge drive

OIRASE BEER Brewery & Restaurant is a brewery-run restaurant serving Oirase beer and stone-oven dishes. It works for lunch before entering Oirase Gorge or a substantial meal after a walk.

02

Shop for apples, dairy products, and gifts in one stop

Shikisaikan tourist products hall, Miraku Kobo, and Ara, Ringo. Aomori Factory make it easy to shop for Towada and Aomori products in a short visit. Drinkable yogurt and apple confections are also sweets that are easy to share in the car.

03

Take a break on the lawn and outdoor field

The official station site lists a lawn, an outdoor field, and a designated BBQ area. General overnight camping is not permitted, although a separate reservation-only trial program offers overnight stays. There is room to stretch outdoors before or after a meal; check the program operator for camping availability.

04

Choose between Oirase Gorge, Tsuta Onsen, and central Towada

West of the station lie Yakeyama, Oirase Gorge, and Tsuta Onsen; heading east takes you back to the Towada Art Center and the city center. The location makes it easy to choose nature, a hot spring, or art according to the weather and time available.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Days with an afternoon gorge walk

Eat lunch and stock up before entering Oirase Gorge

Have lunch, use the restroom, and pick up drinks and a small sweet at the roadside station before heading toward Yakeyama. Dining choices along the beautiful gorge can take time to sort out on arrival, so stopping at OIRASE BEER or Shikisaikan first makes the day easier.

Parking → OIRASE BEER or Shikisaikan → Restrooms → Oirase Gorge Museum and Ishigedo area.

During autumn foliage season and long holidays, avoid peak meal times and check traffic information for the gorge.

A short break after walking

Rest with apples and dairy after the gorge

After a walk in Oirase Gorge, apple sweets or drinkable yogurt can make a lighter break than a full meal. Step out onto the lawn briefly to cool down before getting back in the car.

Arrive from the gorge → Sweets and gifts → Lawn → Journey home.

In the evening, check store hours and product availability first.

Days with a shorter gorge walk

On rainy days, switch to food and city art

If rain cuts your gorge walk short, eat and shop at the station, then return to the Towada Art Center. Food and art offer another way to enjoy Towada when the outdoor part of the day is reduced.

Michi-no-Eki Oirase → OIRASE BEER → Towada Art Center.

The art center is generally closed on Mondays. Check special exhibition fees and last admission.

Adults and chilly autumn or winter days

End a half-day Oirase drive at a hot spring

Have lunch and buy gifts at the roadside station, take a short walk in Oirase Gorge, then warm up around Tsuta Onsen, a hot spring area. Keep the walk manageable and make the hot spring the main stop if the weather worsens.

Roadside station → Oirase Gorge Museum → Ishigedo Rest Area → Tsuta Onsen.

Follow official information on day-use bathing, reservations, and winter road conditions.

Tsutanuma may require reservations and a cooperation fee in foliage season

For an autumn visit, check advance booking and crowd measures before setting out.

Visits range from a short break to a meal stop

Allow about 30–60 minutes for a brief rest, or more time if you also eat and shop. A half-day route or rainy-day alternative is possible.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • Hours differ among Shikisaikan, Miraku Kobo, OIRASE BEER, and Ara, Ringo. If going for a meal, check the restaurant's closing day and last order first.
  • OIRASE BEER directs visitors to social media for shortened hours or closures. If lunch there is your main plan, consider sweets or the products hall as alternatives.
  • The lawn is useful for a change of pace. BBQs are limited to the designated area. General overnight camping is not permitted; check the separate reservation-only trial program if you want to stay.
  • For Oirase Gorge, check weather, road conditions, foliage-season traffic restrictions, and sunset before choosing how far to walk.
  • Snow and ice change winter travel conditions considerably. Consider switching from the gorge to a hot spring or central Towada when conditions call for it.
  • If buying apple sweets or dairy products, consider your journey home and how to keep them cool; buying them near the end of your visit can help.
