Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Hashikami, on National Route 45 from Hachinohe toward the Sanriku coast, brings together Hashikami Wase soba, ichigoni, seafood, and local vegetables. Try soba and seafood at Restaurant Azalee, then shop for yomogi mochi (mugwort rice cakes), processed foods, and seasonal vegetables at the produce market. With more time, continue to Kofunato Coast or Hashikami Hama-no-Eki Ardi-ba. Even a short stop lets you take home flavors from both Hashikami’s hills and shore. Autumn’s freshly harvested soba, summer ichigoni, coastal sunrises, and festivals can make this a destination in its own right.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Eat Hashikami Wase soba beside Route 45

This station serves Hashikami Wase, a traditional local buckwheat variety valued by Hashikami Town. VISIT Hachinohe describes its rich flavor, firm texture, and the appeal of san-tate: freshly milled, freshly kneaded, and freshly cooked soba.

02

Ichigoni and seafood bring the coastal town to life

Ichigoni is a local dish of sea urchin and abalone from the Hashikami–Hachinohe area. Start with the flavors at the station, then visit the coastal market or Kofunato Coast to explore Hashikami’s seaside.

03

Enjoy the produce market, yomogi mochi, and snacks even on a short stop

The station’s official information lists seafood, vegetables, fruit, and souvenirs for sale, and highlights handmade soba, yomogi mochi (mugwort rice cakes), and soft-serve ice cream. Shopping still makes a worthwhile stop when you miss lunchtime.

04

A convenient break between Hachinohe and Kuji

The station is about 30 minutes from Hachinohe Junction via the Hachinohe–Kuji Expressway and about 50 minutes from central Kuji via National Route 45. It makes a convenient break on a coastal drive.

05

Give the family a change of pace with the Poké Lid and coast

Combine the Poké Lid outside the station entrance with Kofunato Coast and Ardi-ba for a short detour that goes beyond shopping.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A lunch break while heading south from Hachinohe

Make Hashikami Wase soba your lunchtime destination

While traveling on National Route 45, stop at Restaurant Azalee for Hashikami Wase soba. Some years bring autumn announcements of freshly harvested soba, making its aroma a reason to visit.

Park → restaurant → produce market → Poké Lid.

The restaurant mainly serves lunch and closes on Thursdays. If you miss its hours, try the produce market and light meals.

A day of coastal flavors

Pair ichigoni with a trip to the coastal market

Look for ichigoni and seafood at the roadside station, then head to Hashikami Hama-no-Eki Ardi-ba by the sea to explore more of the town’s coastal food. Kofunato Coast is another option during the summer ichigoni festival.

Roadside station → Ardi-ba → Kofunato Coast.

Coastal facilities have closing days or seasonal hours, so check their notices on the day you travel.

Shopping on the way home

Shop for dinner ingredients at the produce market

Browse vegetables, fruit, seafood, and processed foods for dinner or souvenirs in a short visit. If buying chilled goods, consider your journey home and bring an insulated bag.

Produce market → local products → yomogi mochi or sweets → home.

Popular prepared foods and mochi may run low later in the day.

A short family break

Combine the Poké Lid and coast with children

Photograph the Poké Lid in front of the entrance, keep shopping brief, then continue to Kofunato Coast if the weather is good. These small stops work even for children too young to sit through a long meal.

Poké Lid → sweets → Kofunato Coast.

The coast can be windy. With infants or toddlers, make the station your main rest stop.

A half-day drive

Explore soba country toward Mount Hashikami

Eat soba at the roadside station, then continue toward Forestpia Hashikami and the Wasse Exchange Center to follow Hashikami Wase soba into the town’s hills. Discover Hashikami’s mountain side as well as its coast.

Roadside station → Forestpia Hashikami → Mount Hashikami area.

The hill-country experience changes with the season and weather. Allow extra travel time in winter or rain.

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Best for a short shopping break planned around feeding and diaper changes.

It may be easier to eat and use the restroom at the station than continue to the coast.

Ages 2–3
★★★☆☆

A Poké Lid photo, a sweet treat, and a short shop can provide a change of pace.

Leave room to choose a snack or mochi instead of a long restaurant meal.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

The Poké Lid, Kofunato Coast, and Ardi-ba make an easy set of small destinations.

Check the wind and footing at the coast; if conditions are poor, favor the station and indoor areas of the coastal market.

Primary-school children
★★★★☆

Hashikami Wase soba, ichigoni, and a sunrise at the coast offer ways to talk about local food and nature.

The summer ichigoni festival and autumn’s new soba can also bring the seasons to life.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Plan lunch around the restaurant’s hours

The restaurant primarily opens for lunch. If Hashikami Wase soba is your goal, arrive around midday to make the most of the stop.

Autumn’s new soba gives you another reason to visit

VISIT Hachinohe lists freshly harvested Hashikami Wase soba at Michi-no-Eki Hashikami, Wasse Exchange Center, and Forestpia Hashikami. Autumn is a good season to explore the town through soba.

In summer, follow ichigoni beyond the station

The ichigoni festival takes place at Kofunato Coast, making it natural to discover the dish at the roadside station and then visit the shore. Notices have said the event proceeds in rain, so allow for the weather and parking on event days.

The Poké Lid gives children a small goal

VISIT Hachinohe says a Pokémon-themed manhole cover stands in front of the station entrance. It gives children a photo opportunity during a shopping stop.

Check wind and footing on a coastal detour

Kofunato Coast is known for its sunrise and varied shoreline. With infants or strong winds, keep the seaside detour short and spend more time at the roadside station or coastal market.

Shop early for a better selection

The selection of seafood, vegetables, and mochi depends on daily deliveries and production. If shopping is your goal, an earlier stop may give you more choice than arriving around or after the lunch rush.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out
