Akari’s Shichinohe notes

The food shelves can point you toward your next Shichinohe stop.

Akari Saegusa sees Shichinohe as a place to eat and shop before heading into town. One day may begin with horse meat ramen for lunch; another with nagaimo yams and garlic to take home, or with the flower exhibition hall before a trip to Rose Country. Beyond its convenience beside the Shinkansen station, it is a place to take home a little of Shichinohe’s food and culture.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Shichinohe sits at 青森県上北郡七戸町字荒熊内67-94 (67-94 Arakumauchi, Shichinohe Town, Aomori Prefecture), on National Route 4, within walking distance of Shichinohe-Towada Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen, and forms the heart of Shichinohe Town Culture Village. The product hall carries local sweets, Komaizumi sake and Nambu miniature ema (decorative wooden votive plaques). At the Sanchoku Shichisaikan farmers’ market, look for nagaimo yams, garlic, black garlic, apple juice, seasonal vegetables and pickles. Restaurant Ema offers horse meat ramen and Shamorock oyakodon, a chicken and egg rice bowl made with Aomori Shamorock chicken. The Nanairokan side also has handmade soba, soba mochi and june soft serve, flavored with perilla seed. On the same grounds are a flower exhibition hall, a Shichinohe Autumn Festival float hall, the Takayama Uichi Memorial Museum of Art and a 24-hour road and tourist information hall. Guide Akari Saegusa recommends eating, shopping and deciding where in town to go next here.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

For a meal, start with Restaurant Ema

Aomori tourism information highlights horse meat ramen and Shamorock chicken and egg rice bowls made with local ingredients. If you want a quick taste of Shichinohe, check the restaurant hours before shopping.

02

The Sanchoku Shichisaikan market is strong on nagaimo, garlic and black garlic

Official information lists vegetables, pickles and processed foods from Shichinohe producers, including nagaimo yams, garlic, apples and tomatoes. You can shop for a meal at home as well as souvenirs.

03

Follow Shichinohe’s flowers from the exhibition hall to Rose Country

The flower exhibition hall at the station sells cut flowers, saplings and arrangements from Rose Country. From early summer through autumn, Higashi-Hakkoda Rose Country is about an 11-minute drive away.

04

An art museum and festival floats make a rainy-day visit possible

The Takayama Uichi Memorial Museum of Art and Shichinohe Autumn Festival float hall share the grounds. If outdoor plans fall through, combine a meal, farmers’ market, museum and festival floats.

05

Within walking distance of the Shinkansen and easy to reach from Route 4

Shichinohe-Towada Station is about a five-minute walk away, and the roadside station is on National Route 4. It is useful before or after a rental car trip, on the way toward Aomori City or Hachinohe, or before heading to Oirase or Shimokita to gather travel information.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

Lunch stop or National Route 4 drive

Start with horse meat ramen to choose a Shichinohe meal

If arriving at lunchtime, check Restaurant Ema’s hours first. Choose horse meat ramen or a Shamorock chicken and egg rice bowl, then browse Komaizumi sake, Nambu miniature ema plaques and local sweets in the product hall before visiting Sanchoku Shichisaikan.

Parking → Restaurant Ema → product hall → Sanchoku Shichisaikan.

The restaurant closes at different times on weekdays and on weekends and holidays, and has a last order time.

Shichinohe-Towada Station users or before and after a rental car trip

Combine shopping and tourist information around a Shinkansen trip

The roadside station is within walking distance of Shichinohe-Towada Station, so it works even around a short train stop. Buy heavy fresh produce just before departure; pick up tourist brochures and road information before setting out. The road and tourist information hall is open 24 hours, making morning and evening visits possible.

Shichinohe-Towada Station → Michi-no-Eki Shichinohe → destination or journey home.

Fresh produce and the restaurant are available during business hours. At night, use is mainly limited to the information hall and restrooms.

A change in the weather or an adult detour

Turn a rainy day toward art and festival floats

When outdoor sightseeing is difficult, add the Takayama Uichi Memorial Museum of Art to a meal and shopping. The Shichinohe Autumn Festival float hall is also on the grounds, offering a brief encounter with the festival’s sounds and impressive floats. It is easy to rearrange a rainy-day plan here.

Restaurant Ema → product hall and farmers’ market → museum → festival float hall.

The museum’s closures, including Mondays, differ from those of the roadside station. Check its official information when visiting for an exhibition.

A flower drive from early summer to autumn

Add Rose Country in flower season

See Shichinohe flowers in the station’s flower exhibition hall, then head to Higashi-Hakkoda Rose Country if time allows. In season, rose soft serve, cut flowers and a pick-your-own experience bring food and flowers together.

Michi-no-Eki Shichinohe → Higashi-Hakkoda Rose Country → farmers’ market for souvenirs.

Rose Country closes for winter and its shop has regular closing days. Check opening information if flowers are the purpose of your trip.

Family drive or a day for physical activity

Add one outdoor play stop with children

The station offers meals, restrooms, a nursing room, a multipurpose restroom and shopping. For longer active play, add a nearby destination: Higashi-Hakkoda Family Travel Village from spring through autumn or Shichinohe Municipal Ski Area in winter.

Michi-no-Eki Shichinohe → Family Travel Village or ski area → journey home.

The family village and ski area operate seasonally; Monday closures and snow conditions can also affect plans.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

A nursing room, multipurpose restroom and indoor rest space make short breaks convenient.

A break and shopping before or after a meal may be easier than a long stay.

★★★☆☆

Soba mochi, sweets and festival floats can provide a change of pace.

Add an outdoor play stop such as Family Travel Village rather than relying on the station alone for play.

Switch between the museum or floats on rainy days and outdoor play on fine days.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

Horse meat ramen and Shamorock chicken and egg rice bowls guide the restaurant choice

Official and tourism information introduce these as local dishes. If lunch is the goal, opening hours and last orders matter.

Nagaimo, garlic, black garlic, pickles and seasonal vegetables anchor the market

Direct sales by Shichinohe producers make shopping for the home table a memorable part of the visit.

Reviews and travel accounts often value the large car park and compact mix of station, products, market and dining

Visitor reports often describe stops of under an hour for a break or shopping; focusing on a meal or shopping can make a short visit easier.

Flowers, the railbus, Jomon history and skiing offer different seasonal detours

Rose Country, Family Travel Village, the railbus, Futatsumori Shell Mound and the ski area have different operating seasons. Choose nearby stops to suit the season.

Check recent notices for parking and EV charging

Parking resurfacing work was announced in 2026, and EV charger information has also changed. Check official notices before a visit that depends on either facility.

Before your visit

Things to check before setting out

Opening and closure days, individual businesses and facilities for children or dogs can affect your plans.

  • For lunch, check Restaurant Ema’s different weekday and weekend or holiday hours and its last order time first.
  • The choice of farm products changes with the season and time of day; arrive early if nagaimo yams or garlic are priorities.
  • For a museum visit, follow the museum’s official closing-day information, which differs from the station’s.
  • Choose nearby stops by season: Rose Country from early summer through autumn, Family Travel Village from spring through autumn, or the ski area in winter.
  • Before buying fresh produce ahead of a train from Shichinohe-Towada, consider how long you will carry it and when your train leaves.
