Akari's Maruseppu notes

This place has changed from a rest stop into a starting point for understanding Maruseppu anew.

Akari Arima does not recommend Maruseppu as an active rest stop. Since deregistration, arrange parking, toilets, and meals elsewhere first; then connect memories of Mokugeikan with Maruseppu's forests.

Highlights

Roadside Station Maruseppu was a familiar stop on National Route 333, centered on the Mokugeikan woodcraft hall. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced the cancellation of its roadside-station registration on December 19, 2025, so do not plan to use it as a roadside-station rest stop now. Its steep triangular roof, timber-rich building, crafts made from local wood, and self-playing piano recall Maruseppu's forestry past. For a drive today, consider active roadside stations such as Engaru Mori no Okhotsk or Shirataki for breaks, and plan separate visits to Maruseppu Forest Park Ikoi no Mori, the Amemiya No. 21 steam locomotive, Maruseppu Onsen Yamabiko, and Cha Cha World. Guide Akari Arima puts parking and toilet availability first, asking whether you can actually rest here before considering food or shopping.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Do not count on this as a rest stop today

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Hokkaido's roadside-station guide record the cancellation of its registration as of December 19, 2025. From April 1, 2026, plan breaks at active roadside stations or other visitor facilities nearby instead of relying on the former station's parking or facilities.

02

Mokugeikan opens a window on Maruseppu's forestry culture

Engaru Town describes Mokugeikan's timber-rich interior, self-playing piano, displays and sales of woodcraft, and displays of piano parts. It speaks to Maruseppu as a town built around wood, beyond its former roadside-station name.

03

Plan for the forest, railway, and onsen rather than a meal here

Instead of planning lunch at the former station, make separate destinations of Maruseppu Forest Park Ikoi no Mori, the Hokkaido Heritage Amemiya No. 21 steam locomotive, and Maruseppu Onsen Yamabiko, a hot-spring bath. From summer through autumn, their open and operating days shape the itinerary.

04

With children, choose Cha Cha World or Ikoi no Mori

Cha Cha World's wooden toys and Ikoi no Mori's play equipment and campsite offer choices for different ages. Pick a definite destination rather than planning a long stay at the former roadside station.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A day passing through on National Route 333

Choose a rest stop before visiting the former station

Treat Maruseppu as a former roadside station. Do not assume toilets, parking, or meals are available there. Decide on an active roadside station or town stop before leaving to make travel on National Route 333 easier.

Roadside Station Engaru Mori no Okhotsk or Roadside Station Shirataki → travel toward Maruseppu.

Do not depend on parking or facilities at the former station.

A day exploring local character

Follow memories of Mokugeikan into Maruseppu's forests

Mokugeikan was memorable for its timber-rich building, woodcraft, and self-playing piano. Continue to Maruseppu Forest Park Ikoi no Mori and Amemiya No. 21 to see how timber transport, woodworking, and daily life shaped this forestry town.

Brief look around the former station site → Ikoi no Mori → Amemiya No. 21.

Check each year's park opening and train operating dates before planning.

A family drive from summer to autumn

Spend half a day at Ikoi no Mori and the onsen

Ikoi no Mori lists its 2026 opening season as April 29 to October 18. It is a seasonal destination that pairs Amemiya No. 21, play equipment, a campsite, and an onsen. Spend time playing in the forest instead of lingering at the former roadside station, then unwind at Maruseppu Onsen Yamabiko.

Ikoi no Mori → Amemiya No. 21 → Maruseppu Onsen Yamabiko.

The onsen lists Tuesdays as closed and closes for winter.

Preschoolers through elementary-school children

Switch to Cha Cha World on a rainy day

Cha Cha World is an indoor attraction with wooden toys from around the world, a play area, and a woodworking studio. With a break at the former roadside station uncertain, consider it from the outset as a place for children to spend time.

Break at an active roadside station → Cha Cha World → Ikutahara or Engaru area.

Check winter closing days and opening hours with the facility before going.

A meal, a sweet treat, market shopping or something to take away: choose a focus for the day instead of trying everything at once.
