Akari's Kamishihoro notes

Choose a taste of Tokachi here before heading into the mountains.

Akari Kitami sees Michi-no-Eki Kamishihoro as a place where choosing what to eat helps shape the trip: morning breakfast, bread, rich soft-serve ice cream, or a Tokachi beef burger. Whether heading up to Naitai Highland or out toward Taushubetsu, pause first over a taste of Kamishihoro to make the drive ahead a little richer.

Highlights

Michi-no-Eki Kamishihoro, on National Route 241, brings together meals, shopping, and travel advice for a drive through northern Tokachi. Its choices range from breakfast and lunch to bread, soft-serve ice cream, and burgers: Western-style meals at La Table de KAMISHIHORO; bread made with Hokkaido wheat and house-made yeast at Tokatoka; Tokachi-milk sweets at THE SANDO; and burgers with 100% Tokachi beef patties at tobachi. There is also a lawn, children's corner, free dog run, and bicycle rental, so visitors can stretch their legs as well as eat. Before or after visiting Naitai Highland Farm, Nukabira Gensenkyo hot-spring area, or Taushubetsu River Bridge, this is a useful stop for Kamishihoro food and road information.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

Several ways to taste Tokachi under one roof

The station has a Western-style restaurant, bakery, sweets shop, and burger shop. Start with breakfast at La Table de KAMISHIHORO; for lunch choose the restaurant or tobachi; or keep it light at Tokatoka and THE SANDO. If one meal option is unavailable, there are others to try.

02

Bread and sweets bring a taste of Kamishihoro to a short stop

Tokatoka offers bread made with Hokkaido wheat and house-made yeast. THE SANDO offers premium milk soft-serve ice cream made with Tokachi milk and Basque cheesecake. Even without a sit-down meal, bread and sweets make a stop worthwhile.

03

A useful stop before or after Naitai, Nukabira, and Taushubetsu

Pick up a snack before Naitai Terrace, receive or return the forest-road gate key for Taushubetsu River Bridge, or check the toilets and road information before Nukabira Gensenkyo. The station fits naturally into northern Tokachi sightseeing. Before heading into the mountains, allow time here to check your schedule and equipment.

04

Take a break from the car on the lawn, in the kids' corner, or at the dog run

The official station information lists bicycle rental, a dog run, and a children's play area. On a long drive, the family can split up for shopping, sweets, or a break with the dog.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A sunny drive through the Tokachi highlands

Have breakfast, then head up to Naitai Highland

Have breakfast at La Table de KAMISHIHORO, then take bread or sweets to Naitai Highland Farm. On a clear day, head up for the view at an elevation of 800 m before spending too long at the station.

Breakfast and toilets at the station → Naitai Highland Farm and Naitai Terrace → return for souvenirs.

Check Naitai Terrace's operating season, gate opening hours, and weather-related changes.

A drive from Obihiro toward Mikuni Pass or Nukabira

Make a short break count with bread and soft-serve

If there is no time for a sit-down meal, bread from Tokatoka and soft-serve ice cream from THE SANDO still make a distinctly Kamishihoro stop. Restaurants can draw crowds at lunchtime on holidays, so leave room to choose bread or sweets instead.

Park → toilets → bread and sweets → retail area → depart.

Popular products may run low at some times of day.

A visit to Lake Nukabira and the former Shihoro Line's arch bridges

Arrange the Taushubetsu River Bridge key and equipment

If you are collecting the forest-road gate key here, the station is the starting point for your itinerary. Allow for reception and instructions, roughly one hour of travel each way, and the key return deadline; fit meals and shopping into the time left.

Confirm booking → check in at the station → Taushubetsu area → return key by 16:30.

The key normally requires online booking; lending and return hours and forest-road conditions impose restrictions.

A long family drive with a dog

Take a break with children and a dog

The dog run, kids' corner, lawn, and sweets make this a useful stop when everyone needs a break from the car. Family members can split up to eat, shop, or wait outside according to their interests.

Dog run or kids' corner → sweets → retail area → toilets.

In summer, mind the sun; in winter, the cold and footing. Keep outdoor stops short when needed.

Half a day of mountain scenery and hot springs after a meal

Switch to nature and hot springs at Nukabira Gensenkyo

After lunch at the station, visit the Higashi Taisetsu Nature Center or Kamishihoro Railway Museum. The route connects Tokachi food with Daisetsuzan National Park and the history of the former Shihoro Line. On rainy days, spend more time in indoor exhibits.

Station → Nukabira Gensenkyo hot-spring area → Higashi Taisetsu Nature Center and Railway Museum.

Nukabira is some distance away: check closing times and winter road conditions.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 and under
★★★☆☆

Suited to a short stop with the baby care area; try to eat before the rush.

Mountain trips mean a longer drive, so take care of feeding and diaper changes at the station first.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

The kids' corner, sweets, and lawn can help break up time in the car.

If the wait for a meal is long, bread or soft-serve may be easier.

Ages 4–6
★★★★☆

Watching the dog run, choosing bread, visiting the aviation park, and going up to Naitai Highland offer plenty to talk about.

Outdoor play depends strongly on the weather; check the wind and cold and keep it brief.

Elementary school age
★★★★★

Taushubetsu, the former Shihoro Line, and the Higashi Taisetsu Nature Center add an educational dimension.

Forest-road visits have safety requirements and time limits, so adults should plan the itinerary carefully.

THE SANDO lists Tokachi-milk soft-serve, roasted green tea, and Basque cheesecake

Sweets suit a short stop for adults as well as families with children.

The tourism association lists parking, campervan sites, an EV fast charger, toilets, and a multipurpose toilet

Alongside food, these facilities make the station a practical rest stop on long drives through eastern Hokkaido and northern Tokachi.

Naitai Terrace runs from late April to the end of October, subject to weather changes

On clear days, head for the highland view early; in fog or strong wind, consider the station and nearby indoor stops.
