Mugine's rest stop notes

Take a break before playtime, and keep a meal option in mind.

This station works well when you start with parking and restrooms, then move on to shopping, play areas, and the hot spring. If the children have energy, choose Cubic Connection; if the weather turns, choose Chikkuru; for a full meal, head to the hot spring restaurant. Having these choices close together makes a Chippubetsu visit easier.

1

A short stop

Use the restroom, buy vegetables, have a Green Soft, and return to National Route 233.

2

With children

Choose Chikkuru or Cubic Connection first, then move to the hot spring and a meal when everyone tires.

3

In season

During rose season, add the rose garden for another taste of the town.

4

Before evening

If the shop has closed, check the hot spring restaurant's hours and adjust your meal plans.

Highlights

Roadside Station Bell-Ringing Town Chippubetsu, a michi-no-eki highway rest stop, sits on National Route 233. Along with a restroom break, you can browse local vegetables and tomato juice at the specialty products hall, try a broccoli sweet treat, or eat Green Napolitan at the adjacent hot spring restaurant. The attractions extend beyond the station: the bell of the Centennial Founding Memorial Tower, the indoor Chikkuru play area, the outdoor Cubic Connection playground, and Bell Park Chippubetsu Campground are nearby. This makes a half day drive with playtime for children followed by a hot spring easy to plan. Check opening hours, play area admission tickets, and seasonal schedules as you combine shopping, food, play, and rest.

Why I like it

Reasons to stop here

01

The roadside station and play areas are within walking distance

After shopping at the station, you can quickly continue to Bell Park Chippubetsu's indoor play area and large outdoor equipment. Chikkuru works for a rainy day, Cubic Connection for a sunny one; when everyone tires, the station and hot spring are close by.

02

Include the hot spring restaurant in your meal plans

The specialty products hall offers local vegetables, tomato juice, and Green Soft, a broccoli flavored sweet treat. For a full meal, try Green Napolitan made with Chippubetsu broccoli at Restaurant Hamanasu inside the adjacent Chippubetsu Onsen Chippu Yu & Yu.

03

A convenient break between Fukagawa and Rumoi

The station is on National Route 233 on the way from central Fukagawa toward Rumoi. With parking for 196 cars and five large vehicles and restrooms, you can adjust the stop to your energy: let children recharge, buy vegetables, relax at the hot spring, or visit the rose garden.

Route idea

Ways to plan your stop

Spend your time at the station or add somewhere nearby. These ideas help you plan around your companions and the weather.

A 20 to 40 minute driving break

Keep a Route 233 stop short, with time to shop

When traveling between Fukagawa and Rumoi, make a short stop for parking, restrooms, and the specialty products hall, in that order. Browse local vegetables and tomato juice, then perhaps pick up a Green Soft or drink for the car.

Parking → restrooms → specialty products hall → departure

The hall generally closes at 17:00 from April through October and 16:00 from November through March. Check Tuesday closures in winter and New Year holiday closures.

A half day drive with preschool or elementary school children

Let children play, then unwind at the hot spring

Choose indoor Chikkuru when rain or heat is a concern, or Cubic Connection when the weather is fine and children want active play. With the play areas as the main event, you can still return to the station's restrooms and shop or eat at the adjacent hot spring when the family tires.

Roadside station restrooms → Chikkuru or Cubic Connection → Restaurant Hamanasu → hot spring

Chikkuru uses timed admission tickets and entry limits during busy periods such as Golden Week, the late April to early May holiday period, and summer vacation. Cubic Connection is seasonal; regular operation in 2026 is planned for April 25 through October 31.

Adults and families stopping for lunch

Make a meal of this broccoli growing town

Browse vegetables at the station, then head to Restaurant Hamanasu for Green Napolitan, a local pasta dish made with Chippubetsu broccoli. After eating, look at the bell tower or extend your visit to the rose garden.

Specialty products hall → Restaurant Hamanasu → Centennial Founding Memorial Tower area → rose garden

Restaurant Hamanasu generally opens 11:30–14:00 (last order 13:30) and 16:00–20:00 (last order 19:30). Follow the restaurant’s current service information.

A leisurely visit from late June to early October

Add summer flowers and camping

Rose Garden Chippubetsu is scheduled to open from June 20 through October 11, 2026; admission is free for a walk among the roses and hills. Bell Park Chippubetsu Campground offers an overnight option, but reservations and reception hours mean it is best to plan this as a separate part of your visit.

Roadside station → rose garden → hot spring or campground

The campground generally operates May 1 through September 30 and requires a reservation. Reception is 13:00–17:00; checkout is 11:00.

Visiting with children

Stars show the editorial recommendation for each age group on a five-point scale. Read the reasons alongside each rating.

Age 1 or younger
★★★☆☆

Useful for a short break at the station or hot spring area.

Prioritize parking, restrooms, shade, and indoor shelter over playground equipment. Chikkuru is intended for young children through elementary school age and their guardians; bringing food inside is prohibited.

Ages 2–3
★★★★☆

The toddler area at indoor Chikkuru makes the visit less dependent on weather.

Timed admission tickets or entry limits can apply in busy periods, so leave room to spend time at the station. Young children need a guardian's accompaniment and supervision at the large outdoor play equipment.

Ages 4–6
★★★★★

Chikkuru, Cubic Connection, the hot spring, and meals fit into a short travel circuit.

Switch indoors when it rains and outdoors when it is sunny. Bring water and a change of clothes on hot days; focus on indoor activities in winter or bad weather.

Elementary school children
★★★★★

Large net structures and a six level outdoor playground offer active play.

Cubic Connection is a large structure reaching 13 m high. Agree on a meeting place that guardians can monitor easily.

Chikkuru during busy periods

From April through the end of November 2026, entry limits apply and timed admission tickets are required. Check time slots during Golden Week and summer vacation.

Outdoor play season

Cubic Connection generally opens from April through October 31. Opening hours are shorter in September and October.

Switching meal plans

Think of the station for quick shopping and sweets, and the hot spring restaurant for a full meal; this gives you options if there is a wait.

Clothes and water

Both indoor and outdoor play can last a while. In summer, drinks, a towel, and spare clothes make the visit easier.

Rest

Ideas for a restful stop

  1. 1
    Park at an easy pace

There are 196 car spaces. On event days or when the play areas are busy, consider letting passengers out first and then parking at your own pace.

  2. 2
Make a short stop at the specialty products hall

Focus on easy to take home items such as vegetables, tomato juice, and broccoli products. Take a break first if you expect to walk for a long time.

  3. 3
Continue to the hot spring or rose garden

Choose the hot spring to rest your legs, or the rose garden for seasonal flowers. The garden is hilly, so consider your parking spot and changes in elevation within the grounds.

Local feel

Reasons to return

Practical ideas and things to consider when spending time here.

On a play area day, the station makes a useful rest base

Family travel accounts and visitor features emphasize the short distances between Chikkuru, Cubic Connection, and the station. A restroom and drink stop before children head to the play areas can help keep a half day visit on track.

During Golden Week and summer vacation, leave alternatives to Chikkuru

Chikkuru has timed admission tickets and entry limits in busy periods; in 2026, entry limits apply from April through the end of November. If you cannot enter immediately, leave time for station shopping, outdoor play, the hot spring, or a meal.

Enjoy the large outdoor equipment with supervision

Cubic Connection is 58 m wide and 13 m high, with many athletic play elements. It is a draw for elementary school children. Stay close to younger children, avoid running on the equipment, and locate the rest area and restrooms first.

Look beyond the shop to the hot spring restaurant for a meal

The station's specialty products hall suits shopping and a light sweet treat; Restaurant Hamanasu at the adjacent hot spring offers a full meal. Green Napolitan gives lunch a local Chippubetsu flavor if you can arrive during service hours.

Visit in the morning if vegetables are your priority

The town recommends an early visit for particular vegetables because farmers deliver them in the morning. Later in the day, you can focus on the hot spring or play areas and shop from what remains.

Check rose blooms and the garden's slopes before visiting

The rose garden offers free flower walks, but the grounds are hilly. On hot days or with older companions, consider parking and rest stops. Check the garden's official Instagram for flowering updates before a flower focused trip.
